However, the label added the following note upon release: “The infamous originally filmed ‘Harriet Drill Beat’ kill scene was unfortunately never found or recorded. We looked and asked endlessly. It was not on the original negative and there were no workprint images that we could find. Trust us, we love movies as much as you do and we tried! Still, mainly the good news is that Paramount is able to find the original, uncut negative of the film.

Extras include on disc one: a new 4K scan from the original camera negative, 8 featurettes (Anemic Valentine: An Interview with Director George Mihalka, From the Heart: An Interview with Actor Paul Calman, With My Friends: An Interview with Actress Laurie Hellyer, Axel, B My Valentine: An Interview with Actor Neil Affleck, Became Sylvia: An Interview with Actress Helen Udy, The Secret Keeper: An Interview with Actor Rob Stein, Broken Hearts and Broken Bones: An Interview with Special Makeup Effects Designer Tom Berman, and Holes in the Heart: Theatrical Version and Uncut a look at the differences between the versions), the original theatrical trailer, the original TV spots, the original radio spots, and a photo gallery.

Now then… Universal has just officially announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite on January 28, with a digital 4K version available today. At this point, it looks like 4K is strictly digital only here in the United States, though it’s possible a physical 4K version could be released later if sales of the title are strong enough. Extras include a Q&A with director Bong Joon-ho featurette.

Paramount also announced that John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place will be re-released in 4K Ultra HD on March 10 in new Mondo Steelbook packaging. It’s time to promote the theatrical release of the sequel, which hits theaters on March 20. You can see the cover design on the top left and also below.

Now then…back to the subject of CES and physical media. Some of you longtime readers may have noticed, but I haven’t been to CES in person in a few years. And the reason is simple: Hollywood studios have almost disappeared from the show, and there haven’t been many major developments related to 4K and Blu-ray during the show. Essentially, there have been no new 4K or Blu-ray players announced – certainly not this year. And the only major development at this year’s show was news from the Ultra HD Association that Samsung and Philips will support Filmmaker Mode, as we said yesterday.

Here’s the thing: All that news can be reported more easily from the office than actually attending the show. And I meet studio and industry people regularly here in SoCal anyway – not necessarily attending CES in person.

Update Exclusive Steelbook Review

In fact, all the news at CES this year focused on the new 4K and especially 8K displays. But again, 8K is simply not necessary. Sure, proponents will say, “But the upscaling algorithms are getting so good that original 4K content will look great at 8K!” I have no doubt that is true. But aside from a few new films shot on IMAX or classic titles shot in 65mm, there is no native 8K content. Again, most movies still end up at 2K DI, although native 4K DIs are finally becoming more common. But completing it in native 8K (especially rendering VFX work at 8K in post-production) would be extremely expensive and time-consuming. There are no plans for a physical 8K media format to deliver full bandwidth content to consumers. And most people (especially in the US) still don’t have the internet bandwidth to watch high-quality 4K content via streaming, let alone 8K. The simple fact is that every physical media format since DVD has captured a smaller and smaller share of the consumer market. Blu-ray has a smaller audience than DVD, and 4K has a smaller audience than Blu-ray. Check out these home video sales percentages for the first week of 2020 (according to NPD VideoScan and Media Play News)…

Halloween Ends Zavvi Exclusive 4k Ultra Hd Steelbook (includes Blu Ray) 4k

Granted, there weren’t many big and in-demand 4K titles released in the fourth quarter, and this puts a damper on consumer spending before Christmas, but still. Those aren’t huge sales figures for 4K discs. And DVD still dominates all disc sales, which the Blu-ray format has done for more than a decade.

An interesting thing that happens every year at CES is that my friends at the Digital Entertainment Group release their annual year-end report on home entertainment. The good news is that total US home entertainment spending in 2019 grew 8.4% to a record $25.2 billion. The bad news is that all the gains are attributable to digital spending. Digital sell-through increased 5.1% to $2.58 billion, while physical media sell-through fell 18.3%. Combined, total sales fell 9.4%. However, streaming subscriptions grew by 23.7%
