With products under the 15k bracket selling like hot pancakes on a Sunday afternoon. This successful gambit played a lot in the company’s favor as it lost a lot of business due to the onslaught of Chinese companies from the coast to India. The company recently announced its Galaxy M31 phone to strengthen its position in the upper spectrum of the price bracket, where it slides into this device to provide the best specs to attract customers.
So, does this device represent a major upgrade from the previously launched M30s or is it an example of Samsung still running dry? Well, let’s find out!

The first time we picked up the Galaxy M31 smartphone, it was difficult to distinguish it from the Galaxy M30s, as both carry the same look as each other. The only change in the design comes from the additional camera that takes full account of the promised quad camera setup at the back.

The display, on the other hand, remains the same, measured at 6.4-inch AMOLED HD + panel as seen on the M30s. The edges are a small fit on the side with an angle to ensure a tighter grip, according to their size. The release button is the same, as one can reach the volume rocker or the power button with enough ease. The plastic construction does not inspire confidence, however, due to the quality produced by Samsung over the years, we hope that the smartphone can easily bring a fair price.
In terms of display quality, the AMOLED HD+ panel found on the Galaxy M31 puts on a great show. Viewing angles are good and the outside view is top notch, making this panel one of our favorite products in the 15k price bracket. Watching movies or playing games is a pleasure, because the device keeps its life when viewing saturation and correct color reproduction. Overall, we like the display and the quality of the product, which although the bag has changed its name, most of it remains the same for many years.
Similar to the display, the M31 retains the Exynos 9611 SoC which has proven to be a reliable chipset for the M family. This Octa-Core processor with four efficiency ARM Cortex-A73 chipset is clocked at 2.3GHz, while four efficiency Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz is a stellar chipset.
It relies on the Mali-G72 GPU for its graphics which when combined with 6GB RAM handles some heavy games with ease. The user experience provided by the processor and tuned Samsung’s One UI 2.0 built on top of Android 10, provides a perfect experience. Games run at the same FPS and apps load faster, which is more than what the average user expects at this price. Security is provided by the open face and the fingerprint sensor on the back, which usually does its job well. The only downside to the whole experience comes from the extra bloatware that includes apps like Netflix, Facebook, Candy Crush Saga and Samsung Shop. This bloatware pushes useless notifications, making it even more frustrating to get useful work done.

What is special is that Android 10 support has brought many features such as Dark Mode and Focus Mode that work well. Samsung also offers some of its special features that allow you to leave the three-button layout to reach full screen, double click to wake, gesture screenshot, among others.
Another department where M31 shines is the quad-camera setup of 64MP main camera (f/2.0), 8MP (f/2.2) Ultra-Wide lens, 5MP macro lens, 5MP depth lens on the back and 32MP (f/ 2.0) lens on the front. The rear camera setup allows users to switch between a few different modes under the camera app. The lens focuses on a fast subject which helps to capture dynamic photos where time is of the essence. Daytime photos are a bit on the warm side, but the camera automatically switches to HDR mode to instantly correct this. The wide angle lens works as expected as it captures all the details with its height of view. The Galaxy M31 is also capable of close-up macro shots due to its focus, allowing depth of field which we like. However, the color of the remote seems exaggerated and loose at some important points. Portrait images, on the other hand, turned out to be very good, as the device detects small edges that create photos that have the quality of blur that we hope to get. Night mode improves visibility and helps take better photos.
The same applies to the selfies, which are necessary when shooting with enough light and the best in low light conditions. Additionally, the camera app includes various tools such as Super-Steady mode, 4K mode, Hyper-lapse mode, and Super Slo-Mo mode which gives some output to the M31.
Finally, the battery has been upgraded from 5000mAh to 6000mAh to give you an estimate. two days worth of usage or as Samsung claims, 21 hours of internet usage, 48 hours of LTE network calls and 26 hours of video playback. We found this claim to be true as we got more than 18 hours of battery life through our heavy gaming and chat sessions.

To top it all off, there’s also support for fast charging from the 15W power brick supplied in the box, which takes nearly 2 hours to juice up this 6000mAh battery from 5 percent to 100 percent.
Although the Galaxy M31 remains mostly unchanged, we still believe that this smartphone is a stellar choice in the sub 15K price bracket. The upgraded RAM adds a camera, and a beautiful UI adds spice. So if you are in the market looking for a smartphone to support long games or watch endless Netflix series, the M31 is just for you.
