The thing to know about modern TVs is that buying new is less about avoiding a lemon and more about making sure you’re not paying for features you don’t need or won’t use.
But the good news is that even affordable TVs tend to look good if you just want the basics.
If you don’t plan to play video games or watch Blu-ray discs, you probably don’t need a TV with a 120 Hz refresh rate, which tends to increase the price.
And if the intended room is particularly bright, you may want to go for a high-end LCD TV, as such models will be much brighter than budget LCD TVs or OLED TVs.

If you don’t mind spending more for better video processing, or if you need a different screen size than the U8H offers, consider the Samsung QN90B instead. Available in smaller (43.50-inch) and larger (85.98-inch) sizes compared to the Hisense U8H, the QN90B is slightly brighter and produces a cleaner, more nuanced picture that photophiles will appreciate.
The Hisense U8H offers great picture quality, great gaming features and a Google TV interface, but it has narrower viewing angles and a smaller screen size than some other TVs.

Why we like it: The 2022 TCL 5-Series (S555) delivers a beautiful 4K HDR picture with better brightness than the competition and comes in 50-, 55-, 65- and 75-inch sizes to match. most rooms. This is the company’s most affordable TV line that includes advanced LCD technologies such as full-line local dimming LED backlighting for better image contrast and quantum dots for richer colors and supports Dolby Vision HDR and the latest advanced gaming features. Cons, but not dealbreakers: The Series 5 panel only has a refresh rate of 60Hz, so motion isn’t as smooth as it can be on a 120Hz panel, which offers faster pixel refresh and less motion blur. If the refresh rate is a deal breaker for you, consider spending a bit more on the new 2022 TCL 6-Series, which is a notable upgrade to the 5-Series, providing not only a faster refresh rate, but better HDR performance as well.

Cons, but not dealbreakers: Because it uses new technology, the S95B is only available in screen sizes of 55 and 65 inches, which limits its appeal and flexibility. It also does not have support for the Dolby Vision HDR format. In our tests, the redesigned Samsung Smart Hub smart TV interface was slower than we would have liked, though we appreciated how powerful the platform was, especially for games.
The Samsung S95B offers excellent 4K HDR image quality, thanks to the QD-OLED panel, for a fairly reasonable price for the new technology.
Why we like it: The TCL 32S334 is a great little smart TV that you can set up quickly and easily and use in almost any space. It offers good picture and sound quality, and the built-in Android TV smart TV platform supports all major video and music streaming services. We like Android TV’s customizable interface, and the remote control is simple without being over-the-top, with useful buttons and a microphone for voice searches. A Bluetooth audio output is available to send TV audio wirelessly to headphones or speakers, and you can choose a wired or wireless network connection for streaming.
Cons, but not deal-breakers: None of the 32-inch TVs we’ve tested excelled in brightness, and their LCD panels don’t have any light-protection technology to improve picture contrast — so they’re not a good choice for bright rooms. The 32S334’s viewing angles are average, and the 720p resolution isn’t ideal for close-up use, such as typing or gaming. If you need 1080p resolution or prefer the Roku smart TV platform, consider our next pick, the TCL S327.
Best 8k Tvs 2023: The Ultimate Big Screen 8k Resolution Televisions
