All USB-C batteries suitable for use with devices such as a MacBook or MacBook Pro are large and typically weigh less than a pound or more. You don’t want to keep one of these in your pocket, but it will fit in a bag or backpack.
Each battery we tested is rated at 45W or less, as there are no more powerful batteries on the market. They all have less than 100 Wh, which is the limit that can be taken on board the plane in hand luggage (such power banks cannot be transported in checked baggage).

While all of these batteries range in capacity from 19,000 to 26,800 mAh, none of them offer the maximum stated capacity, as power is always lost when transferring a charge from one device to another.
All of these USB-C batteries can quickly charge compatible iPhones, including the iPhone 8 and later. Thanks to fast charging, if you use a USB-C to Lightning cable, you can charge your iPhone up to 50 percent in 30 minutes and up to about 80 percent in an hour.
When the iPhone’s battery gets full, charging slows down so it doesn’t reach 100 percent in an hour.
I tested all of these battery packs with the iPhone XS Max and iPhone X to make sure everything worked, and each was able to charge the devices to 50 percent in half an hour with very little change, and 75 in about an hour to 80 percent.

When it comes to capacity, these batteries are capable of charging an iPhone multiple times. Expect at least three charges from the smaller ~20,000mAh battery for the iPhone XS Max and around 4 to 5 charges from the 26,000mAh battery. For the current generation 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, if you use a USB-C to USB-C cable, you can charge them faster with one of these USB-C batteries than with the standard 18W charger that comes with them.
Apple’s 18W USB-C Power Adapter charged my iPad Pro an average of 45 percent in an hour. With a 30 or 45W USB-C battery, the iPad Pro charges continuously from 65 to 66 percent in an hour. The high-capacity batteries give the iPad Pro about two full charges, while the low-capacity batteries last for about one and a half.

All of these USB-C batteries will charge MacBooks and MacBook Airs with a USB-C port at the same speed you’d get with a standard MacBook or MacBook Air power adapter. There’s no benefit to using more than 30W, so each of these capacities offers roughly the same charging speed with the only difference.
Higher-capacity batteries will charge your MacBook or MacBook Air one and a half to two times longer, while lower-capacity models offer a full charge followed by another 20 percent.
Since the 15-inch MacBook Pro models come with either 85W or 87W power adapters for charging, it may come as a surprise that you can use all of these 30W and 45W chargers with your MacBook Pro as well.
Charging is much slower than with the more powerful 15-inch MacBook Pro power adapter, but it works. In fact, as you will see in my testing below, it works even when the MacBook Pro is used for tasks that are not very system intensive, such as web browsing, social media, writing, emailing, light graphics editing , watching videos on YouTube and more.

I’ve seen people ask if using a low wattage power adapter damages the MacBook Pro battery, and from what I can tell based on my research, the answer is no. It will charge slower, but ultimately it won’t affect the performance compared to the standard charging method.
Most big brand batteries like Anker and Mophie have a maximum of 45W, but there are a few 60W options on the market that are more expensive but charge MacBook Pro models faster. There are also some Kickstarters for 100W chargers, but these batteries are not yet widely available for sale.
I haven’t tested this battery pack with the USB-C 13-inch MacBook Pro because I don’t have one, but everything that applies to the 15-inch model also applies to the 13-inch model. This battery charges the 13-inch MacBook Pro faster (though not at 61W) and offers more capacity than the 15-inch MacBook Pro.
While most USB-C batteries available are 30W, there are a few 45W options on the market, so both options are covered in this review.

For most Apple devices, there is no functional difference between 30W and 45W because the MacBook, “MacBook Air”, “iPad Pro” and iPhone models do not charge faster with a 45W power bank than with a 30W power bank. All of these devices have a maximum power of 30W, and some, such as the iPhone, have a maximum of 18W.
Make a difference of more than 30W to charge a 13- or 15-inch MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro model charges much faster with the 45W powerbank than the 30W version. 45W is obviously less than the 61W or 85/87W chargers on the 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pro models, so don’t expect standard charging speeds with these powerbanks .
I wanted to test these batteries in real-world conditions, rather than relying on test equipment, to give potential buyers an idea of the actual performance they can expect from a USB-C battery pack.
Tested with 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro (76WHr), 2016 12-inch MacBook Pro (41.4WHr), 2018 11-inch USB-C iPad Pro (29.37Wh). Wh) and Maxiphone from 2018 (12.08 Wh). iPads and iPhones were discharged at 1 percent and Macs at 5 percent prior to testing. Charging tests were conducted in airplane mode and with the display off, except for the MacBook Pro test used.

Anker’s 30W PowerCore+ 26800 is a simple, hassle-free battery that gets the job done. At 1.27 pounds, 6.5 inches long, and 3.1 inches wide, it was the largest battery I’ve tested. It doesn’t fit in your pocket and will add some weight to your purse or small bag, but on the plus side it has its own 30W USB-C power adapter.
It has a brick-like design with rounded edges and a flat top and bottom, with one USB-C port and two USB-A ports for charging. While it’s not the most glamorous power bank, it’s simple and unobtrusive except for the size. My favorite feature of the PowerCore+ is the button on the front that lights up with up to 10 LED dots when pressed to let you know the charge level. With the remaining charge, it has a grainier appearance compared to most other batteries.
Anker’s PowerCore+ 26800 PD does not support pass-through charging, so you won’t be able to plug in other devices to charge it while it’s charging itself.
