Should You Buy Samsung Galaxy A51 In 2021?
What can a $400 phone really be? When it comes to the Samsung Galaxy A51, the answer is simple: very good. As the first real representative of the Galaxy A family in the US, the A51 is a convincing attempt to prove that Samsung can make a good mid-range phone worth buying. In fact, Samsung’s budget phone (£329 in the UK and AU$599 in Australia) is even better than the iPhone SE (which starts at $399, £419 and AU$749) in some and significant ways. When it comes to screen size and clarity, phone features, camera quality and performance, the Galaxy A51 delivers on what counts, with one exception.

The Achilles heel of the Galaxy A51 is the speed of the Samsung-made Exynos 9611 processor. Performance seems slow during everyday activities, such as waiting for a web page to load or apps to update. Benchmark tests confirm this observation in the real world.
The Galaxy A51 certainly falls short against high-end phones like the Galaxy S20, but also against the A51’s main rival. That’s because Apple has given the iPhone SE the same A13 Bionic chipset as the most expensive iPhone 11, so Apple’s budget device is moving fast. The iPhone SE also beats the A51 when it comes to water resistance and wireless charging, both features that Samsung’s cheaper phone lacks. Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Doctor, There’s A Fly In This Ointment
But the Galaxy A51 has its charms. It doubles the iPhone SE’s built-in storage for the starting SE price, giving it 128GB compared to the SE’s 64GB in the cheapest model, and supports external storage. Samsung’s display is much larger, with thin bezels that make the phone modern and designed to take up less space. Battery life is also the same between the two phones. Both of them lasted about 16 hours in a repeated video test in airplane mode, with more in the lab. In this test, the Galaxy A51 lasted about 20 minutes longer than the SE.
The Galaxy A51 also holds its own on the camera front, as is common in comparisons between Samsung phones and the iPhone: the Galaxy’s photos are richer compared to the iPhone’s more natural tones. The iPhone SE uses optical image stabilization, but the A51’s four cameras also offer more shooting options than the iPhone SE. My biggest concern is the wide-angle lens, which the SE doesn’t have. But in all other respects, the photo quality is pretty close, with one better than the other in one scenario or another. Take the iPhone SE out of the equation and the A51 is a similar Galaxy S20 Plus for a third of the price. Considering the A51 is significantly cheaper than any phone in the Galaxy S20 family, it’s an impressive overall package.
At first glance, it’s hard to tell the two big phones apart side-by-side, except that the A51’s front-facing camera is more obvious and the A51 uses an optical in-display fingerprint scanner. By the way, I found the fingerprint scanner to be more accurate than the Galaxy S20’s ultrasonic sensor.

The A51 is also slightly lighter as it has a plastic base instead of glass. When I put them side-by-side and watched the same Netflix show in the same frame, the A51’s display was nearly as bright, detailed, and rich in color as the Galaxy S20 Plus. Outdoor legibility in the midday sun was also fairly even.
Photos and videos look much better on the Galaxy S20, mainly because the more expensive model has sharper photo resolution and includes OIS, which makes for smoother, more stable images and videos. On the Galaxy A51, you can take advantage of Samsung’s camera software, including night mode, and the phone comes with settings like macro and HDR. You can take a 48 megapixel photo by selecting the camera setting. When I compare the same close-up photos taken with both phones on a laptop screen, it’s easy to see how the Galaxy S20 is superior. In other photos, photos of local flowers with my walk or my prepared dinner look just as good.
I appreciate that the Galaxy A51 has macro photography where the Galaxy S20 blurs when you get too close. In some cases, it was too easy to make the macro out of focus with the A51. The Galaxy S20’s selfies are much better, but they’re just fine with the A51. You can also use portrait and beauty modes to soften the scene.
Disappointingly, the Galaxy A51 is not water resistant. Most modern phones have this, although it’s common for cheap devices to be waterproof or simply “splash-proof”. The A51’s battery life lasts all day from dawn to dusk, averaging 16 hours, 10 minutes after three video retests in airplane mode.
