Update A51 New Price Review – Samsung is beefing up its A-series lineup with brand new models, starting with the Galaxy A71 and Galaxy A51 announced earlier this month. The Galaxy A51 has been launched in India starting at Rs. 23,999. This new smartphone brings some iterative updates to the current Galaxy A50s (review) to keep the series fresh and relevant.
According to Samsung, the Galaxy A51 is one of the first phones in the series to feature an Infinity-O display and a macro camera. Aside from these highlight features, it shares many of the same specs as its predecessor, including its AMOLED display, processor, and design aesthetic. Apart from the Redmi K20 Pro (Review) and Redmi K20 (Review), there isn’t much competition at this price level, which could be an advantage for Samsung.
Update A51 New Price Review
The body design of the Samsung Galaxy A51 is similar to the Galaxy A50s. We have an all-polycarbonate body that’s fairly lightweight at 172 grams, and it’s very slim at just 7.9mm thick. The slick body is prone to fingerprints, but it was less noticeable on our Prism Crush Black unit. The finish on the rear is also a bit slippery, but luckily Samsung provides a case in the box.

The biggest change is the Infinity-O display, which we first saw on a Galaxy A-series phone. It’s essentially a hole in the upper middle of the display, similar to what we saw on the Galaxy Note 10+ (review). Samsung may not have changed the design of the body too much, but the hole-punch display does make this phone look premium, and we appreciate it. The Galaxy A51 uses a Super AMOLED panel with Full HD+ resolution, which produces strong colors and good sharpness. It looks striking from the front thanks to slim bezels all around.
The button placement is ergonomic and on the right we have a tray for two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. At the bottom we have the usual headphone jack, USB Type-C port and speaker grilles. The Galaxy A51 has a familiar-looking camera bump on the back, but now has a fourth camera. The bumps don’t stick out too much, which is nice.
The Galaxy A51 comes with the usual accessories, including a 15W fast charger, Type-C cable, earphones, SIM eject tool and case.
Samsung is sticking with the same Exynos 9611 processor as the Galaxy A50s, which feels a bit weak in 2020 at this price. The Galaxy A51 is available with 6GB or 8GB of RAM, and both variants have 128GB of internal storage. Other specs include dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC, and FM radio. The usual sensors are present and this phone also has Widevine L1 certification. The Galaxy A51 supports Samsung Pay, so you can use it for contactless payments.
Samsung Galaxy A51: Making Most Of The Right Choices
The out-of-the-box software that runs on this phone is Samsung’s One UI 2.0, which is based on Android 10. The new version looks and feels similar to the previous version of One UI we used before, but Samsung made some tweaks to improve the user experience. Changing the wallpaper is much easier now because there is a dedicated menu instead of redirecting to the theme app.
Other small changes include the location of permission access notifications from apps, which are now displayed at the bottom of the screen instead of the center. The Device Maintenance sub-menu has also been revamped; battery usage over the past 7 days can now be tracked, not just when the phone was last fully charged; you can now change lock screen app icons, set default dialer or camera shortcuts Replaced with DnD or Torch toggle.
Some bloatware is still preinstalled, including third-party apps and some Samsung’s own apps like Samsung Shop, but most can be uninstalled. Samsung has also added some India-specific features to the Galaxy A51, such as the ability to organize your SMS messages in the form of visual cards, multilingual predictive typing, and Smart Crop, which it claims can detect the most relevant parts of a screenshot and let you only It can be cropped with a single tap. We’ve found that the Smart Crop feature works best if there are images in the screenshot.
In terms of everyday use, the Galaxy A51 feels very similar to the Galaxy A50. The slim and lightweight form factor is something we really like. Navigating the interface is relatively quick, but it doesn’t feel very smooth. In some cases, we noticed a little lag in system animations. Benchmarks perform well; similar to what a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 or 665 SoC would achieve. Still, for the price Samsung is asking for this phone, that’s a bit impressive.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: A Good Screen Paired With Not So Good Performance
In AnTuTu we got 1, 86, 220 points, and in GFXbench’s T-Rex test we hit 42fps. The back of the phone does get a little warm when playing games and running stressful apps, but it’s never been this uncomfortable. Thankfully, the Exynos 9611 SoC is quite capable in terms of graphics. Both PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends work well, with decent frame rates.
Biometric authentication works well, but is a bit slow. The in-display fingerprint sensor takes a while to authenticate you and unlock the phone, as does facial recognition.
The Galaxy A51 supports Dolby Atmos, but only if you have wired headphones plugged in. Audio quality with the bundled headphones is strictly average, but this phone sounds better with higher-grade aftermarket headphones. The bottom-firing speakers aren’t very loud, but they’re good enough for personal listening. The display is one of the best aspects of this phone. Brightness is very good, and colors look lively, which makes watching anything very enjoyable.
Samsung used a 4,000mAh battery for the Galaxy A51, which managed 14 hours and 55 minutes on our HD video loop test. We easily got a full day of normal use, with more than enough power left to get us through half a day. There’s fast charging, and we managed to charge the battery to 67 percent in under an hour. A full charge takes more than two hours. It’s relatively fast, but not as fast as others in the segment, such as the Redmi K20 Pro, which charges up to 80 percent in an hour.
Samsung Galaxy A52 Vs Galaxy A51: Upgrade Or No?
Samsung has added a new 5-megapixel macro camera to the three cameras on the Galaxy A50s. They include a 48-megapixel main sensor; a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera; and a 5-megapixel depth sensor.
In One UI 2.0, the camera app got a bit of a redesign, and now the icon looks slightly different. Most shooting modes are also grouped together in the More menu now, but you can add them to the main viewfinder interface if you want.
By default, the main camera captures oversampled 12-megapixel photos, but you can shoot at full 48-megapixel resolution if desired. This option is hidden in the aspect ratio menu. In well-lit conditions, the Galaxy A51 manages to capture detailed photos of objects in the center of the frame. However, objects towards the edges often look a bit blurry and relatively softer.
In low light, the main camera captures very good colors, detail is fairly good, and there isn’t a lot of noise. There’s a dedicated night mode, but we didn’t find it significantly different from photos taken in standard photo mode, as the scene optimizer automatically adjusts parameters when it detects low light.

The wide-angle camera captures more of any scene in the frame, but it does introduce some pretty bad barrel distortion. Even with the Ultra Wide Lens Correction option enabled, some photos still look unnaturally distorted. Photos taken with this camera in low light look noticeably darker and have less detail. Night mode doesn’t help much here either.
Live focus mode blurs the background for a more vivid look. Image quality is good, and the depth camera helps the Galaxy A51 do a decent job of edge detection. You can adjust the blur level here, but other effects of this mode (such as spot colors, etc.) that we’ve seen on other Galaxy phones are missing.
Close-ups are also very good. Focus speed is adequate in good lighting, and we managed to capture some pretty decent photos. When using a macro camera, you can get closer to your subject. Colors aren’t bad, and the sensor captures a decent amount of detail.
The Galaxy A51 can shoot video up to 4K without any stabilization. Video quality is decent if shot in good light, but in low light clips are grainy and have less detail. You do get stabilization at 1080p, but as a result, there’s also a noticeable shimmer effect when walking around. Continuous autofocus is also a bit sluggish.
