Despite what Samsung would have you believe, the Galaxy series doesn’t begin and end with the S and Note lines. Samsung’s flagships may get all the attention, but you don’t become the biggest smartphone maker on the planet if you ignore those who don’t have the best price for the latest device.

That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it’s great. At first glance, it looks like the Galaxy S10, but inside it offers an experience that’s fast enough without maxing out the performance graphics. It’s an absolute steal at £310 and seriously worth considering if the S and Note series are a bit pricey for you.

The Galaxy A series is very, very confusing. What you really need to know is that the Galaxy A50 is currently the second best in the line, behind the A70. There will soon be a third when the A80 launches later this month. This makes it better than the A10, A20e and A40, generally speaking.
What that actually translates to is a 6.4-inch device that looks like the Samsung Galaxy S10, but thinner on the inside. The 2.3GHz octa-core Exynos 9610 processor powering the phone is roughly equivalent to the Snapdragon 675 that confusingly powers the Galaxy A70. The phone also has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
Impressively, considering the price, the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with a triple camera array on the back, with a depth sensor and an ultra-wide lens, accompanied by a 25-megapixel main camera. The A50 also comes with Samsung’s usual Super AMOLED display, which is impressive when competitors in this price range often opt for cheaper displays. Doubly so because it also has an in-display fingerprint reader.
So what’s the harm? A pretty reasonable £310, isn’t it. It’s actually quite a bit cheaper than many of Samsung’s other smartphones, so its closest competitors are from other manufacturers.

First up is our favorite mid-range model, the Google Pixel 3a. A stripped down version of Google’s flagship, this version is slightly slower, less impressively built and lacks a few features at £399, but it already retails for around £350. Similarly, the P30 Lite is a scaled-down version of Huawei’s P30 series and retails for £329.
Alternatively, there’s the mid-range flagship, the Xiaomi Pocophone F1. It’s a device that somehow manages to cost just £329 despite packing Qualcomm’s fastest mobile processor of 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which started at £380, but has recently dropped in price.
It’s some pretty tough competition, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 is off to a great start with a look that’s too much for the Galaxy S10. That means there’s virtually no shell to speak of, although this version does see the return of the front-facing camera. There’s more to it than just the earpiece, though — a small indentation at the top of the phone.
As with the S10, there’s a very small chin on the bottom of the phone, but it’s only noticeable because the rest of the sides have almost no bezels to speak of. The back is slightly curved and is plastic rather than glass, which should make it a bit more durable. It’s still the kind of smartphone you’ll want to protect just in case, mind you.

What’s most interesting about a phone at this price point is that the fingerprint reader is built into the display, meaning it’s not visible on the phone itself. Just tap the bottom of the screen with your thumb and the phone is unlocked – maybe a little slower than usual, but still a great feature for the price.
As for other features, as always, Samsung is very good. Expandable memory? Check: microSD cards up to 512 GB are supported. A headphone jack? Present it and fix it. Two sim cards? Yes, sir. The two downsides I can find are that it’s not waterproof and doesn’t support wireless charging, but you can’t buy everything at this price.
If there’s one thing Samsung is known for with its phones, it’s the quality of its screens. And that Super AMOLED display doesn’t disappoint – this time you’re looking at a 6.4-inch panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080.
The screen displays 100% of the sRGB spectrum and in the main color screen mode it manages to display colors very accurately. The other modes – Photo, Cinema and Adaptive – are a bit livelier, but you can’t say you’re out of options.

As an AMOLED, contrast is excellent and brightness isn’t bad either, peaking at 560 cd/m2 brightness on auto mode (although it’s limited to 350 cd/m2 if you push the brightness to maximum, probably because of the battery. )
In short, it’s as good a display as you’d expect for the price—better, in fact, thanks to the addition of an in-display fingerprint reader.
Before I answer that question, a brief summary. The Samsung Galaxy A50 is powered by a 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In everyday use, it’s smooth, opens quickly, and jumps between apps with ease. But how does it fit the criteria?
With one glaring exception, it’s all a lot. The Samsung Galaxy A50 beats everything else in its price range (including, funnily enough, the £60 more expensive Galaxy A70), but not by such a margin that things become too obvious.
Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: The New Budget Champion
With this exception: the £329 Xiaomi Pocophone F1 wipes the floor with everything in this price range. That’s no surprise considering it uses the same chip that Samsung’s Galaxy S9 had in the US last year, but it’s pretty obvious what to do if you want to get the most bang for your buck.
It’s a similar story when it comes to graphics grunt, although here the Galaxy A50 fares slightly worse, behind the Pixel 3a’s Snapdragon and the Nokia 8.1. The Pocophone F1 is an even more clear winner, of course.
But the Samsung Galaxy A50 has one big ace up its sleeve, and that’s battery life. Our video wasn’t really long enough to show everything, so it started the cycle a second time, lasting 21 hours and 21 minutes before the 4000mAh cell finally died. It was only beaten by the extra 500mAh Galaxy A70, where it lasted 25 hours and 22 minutes.
Samsung Galaxy A50 impresses us with not one, not two, but three rear cameras. The 25-megapixel, f/1.7 main camera is supported by an eight-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a five-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor. It would be nice if one of them was a telephoto zoom, but I’m probably asking for the moon on a stick given the generous specs we got for the price.
Samsung Galaxy A50s Review: Good Upgrade But Still Similar To Galaxy A50
That makes it a pretty good matchup with the £329 Huawei P30 Lite’s triple-camera array (48MP, f/1.8 with an eight-megapixel wide-angle lens and a two-megapixel depth sensor). And while the Samsung Galaxy A50’s photos look pretty good from a distance when you zoom in, it’s clear that the Huawei P30 Lite has the upper hand.
Which by no means means that the Galaxy A50 is bad. And given the uncertain future of Huawei’s Android, you might consider the slight loss of loyalty a price worth paying.
In low-light indoor shots, the cameras are more evenly matched, and both produce images with detail, accurate colors, and very little noise. Good job by both, but Huawei still has a slight edge.
For video, the Galaxy A50 can record in Full HD resolution at 30 fps. If you want 4K or 60fps (not both at the same time, mind you), you’ll need to pay an extra £60 for the Galaxy A70. Still, video quality is pretty good and image stabilization seems pretty solid for nimble hands.

The front selfie camera also deserves attention. It’s a 25-megapixel affair with an f/2.0 aperture. That might be overkill for Skype calls and selfies, and even with the beautification mode off, Samsung still insists on removing all your wrinkles and giving you a weird, alien glow in the Samsung camera app.
For some, this may be considered a plus, but Instagram users who abuse smartphone beauty modes be warned: you are not fooling anyone.
Still, if that’s all you can say about the Galaxy A50, then Samsung is doing something right. Very true, actually.
For £310 you get a pretty impressive smartphone that looks good, has a great display, is fast enough for most people and takes decent photos too. This is a phone that will be more than enough for most people.
