The OnePlus TV Q1 series is quite radical in terms of design, with a carbon fiber-like texture on the back and is quite controversial. Everything has changed with the OnePlus TV 55U1. The TV has a thickness of only 6.9 mm on top and sides and an aluminum body. The bezel around the screen is thin, with a small OnePlus logo right below the screen that’s barely noticeable unless you’re right in front of it. The screen-to-body ratio is an impressive 95 percent, making for a stunning TV from every angle.
It’s also quite heavy for a 55-inch TV due to the premium materials used. From the front, the 55U1 resembles the OnePlus TV Q1, with a rear-mounted speaker and a power button at the bottom near the bottom-right corner.
The bottom is a little chunky with a familiar carbon fiber-like texture, along with the wall mount jacks in the middle and all the ports on the right, and the shroud is separated. If you’re setting up your TV on a table, you can turn this on after connecting an external device to keep the TV’s back panel uniform.
The TV has a decent set of ports, including three HDMI inputs (one of which supports HDMI ARC), two USB ports, an AV-In connector that works with an adapter, an RF antenna connector, and optical audio out. and an Ethernet port for a wired Internet connection. The notable omission here is the 3.5mm audio jack, but there’s Bluetooth for wireless speakers or headphones.

If you want to display the OnePlus TV U series table (55U1), it is a bit easier to install and more stable than the OnePlus TV Q1 series. The stand is firmly and securely fixed near the corner of the TV, so you’ll need a table wide enough to place the TV on. It has standard VESA sockets on the back for wall mounting, and can accept almost any VESA-compatible wall mount kit for its size.
The wall mount was a bit tricky for me as OnePlus doesn’t include a kit in the box. I used a standard VESA kit, but due to the slanted back of the TV, it made it tilt up a bit. This isn’t a major issue for me due to the height and placement of the TV in my home, but it could be a problem for some and it definitely looks awkward on my wall.
OnePlus says that the official wall mount kit will be delivered by the company’s installation experts, and can be installed for free and fix the tilt problem. However, at the time of this review, the company was unable to provide more details on this, including the design of the wall mount kit. However, the fact that users can experience this problem with anything other than the official wall mount kit is a little annoying.
The OnePlus TV U series (55U1) features a 55-inch Ultra-HD (3840×2160 pixels) panel with VA LED backlighting and HDR support up to Dolby Vision. There is also MEMC for motion interpolation. The TV has a total sound output of 30 watts through the four-speaker configuration below. The 55U1 remote control is plastic and runs on AAA batteries, but still looks like the Q1 series. It doesn’t sit as well in the hand, but it’s lighter and more functional than before.
Up top, there’s a D-pad for navigation, a Google Assistant button, Android navigation keys, hotkeys for Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, and the usual volume and mute buttons on this Bluetooth and LCD remote. There’s still no dedicated power button; The OnePlus button controls power when the TV is in standby mode, and a long press brings up restart, shutdown and standby options. This button also activates the launch of Oxygen Play with a short press when the TV is on.
OnePlus seems to have taken the feedback seriously, and there’s one important new button that makes turning on the TV a breeze. The multifunction button – marked with three check marks and a circle – lets you quickly access settings from any TV screen without forcing you to return to the Android TV home screen like before.
From this pop-up menu, you can manage network settings, select different sources, adjust picture and sound modes, toggle Bluetooth Stereo mode, and enter the full settings menu. All this can be done even while something is playing on the TV without interrupting the playback regardless of the source device. This is much needed and fixes what I feel is a major flaw with the OnePlus Q1 series.

As expected on Android TVs, the OnePlus TV U Series (55U1) has Chromecast built-in and Google Assistant support. Additionally, the OnePlus TV U Series can be paired with Alexa, allowing you to use your Echo or any other compatible device in your home with your TV for voice commands.
Not much has changed on the software front of the OnePlus TV U Series (55U1); the TV runs Android TV 9 Pie, familiar with OnePlus’ own Oxygen Play launcher. You access apps and games through the Google Play store for Android TV, and several apps, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, come pre-installed on the TV. There’s no noticeable lack of apps, so you get the full Android TV experience on this TV.
I’m happy to report here that OnePlus has managed to resolve many of the early software issues I encountered with the OnePlus TV Q1 Pro. This TV is fast, responsive and easy to use. The only problem I’ve noticed while using the TV is that the Dolby Vision logo is often visible on the screen even when the switch is off. However, this is a small issue that can be easily fixed by going into settings and turning it back on and off.
Moreover, the settings are complete and the picture and sound settings on the OnePlus TV 55U1 are more responsive. The difference in image quality is noticeable, and turning off motion interpolation and other image processing modes shows the difference. It’s easy to adjust the TV to the correct picture settings for different types of content, while HDR and Dolby Vision content receive their own special settings that don’t need to be adjusted at all.

There’s also an AI picture quality mode that allows the TV to adjust settings on the fly according to the content on the screen, and it works well too. The TV boots quickly, starting from standby in just two seconds. Overall, I was very impressed with how easy the OnePlus TV U Series was to use and how polished and hassle-free the software was.
Oxygen Play was a little lacking in my opinion when it launched with the OnePlus TV Q1 series last year, but it seems to have improved a lot since then.
