Iphone 14 Review: A Great Upgrade For Old Iphone Users
The iPhone 12 is a beautiful phone and Apple’s best-looking phone since the iPhone 5, a device that needs a lot of inspiration. Rounded edges and a slightly curved look have been replaced everywhere by flat edges and straight lines. It’s clean, very well built, and a lot of fun to use.
It’s thinner, lighter, smaller and more ergonomic than the iPhone 11 it replaces, and the flat sides make it more comfortable to hold. Everything works, from the size to the weight. It’s also a more durable phone, with tougher glass on the front and an improved IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance. Apple now claims it can withstand up to 6 meters of water for 30 minutes.
It’s a design that Apple is saving for the iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and possibly the iPhone 15, if rumors are to be believed, so it feels as fresh as the newer iPhones in hand.
Interestingly, the iPhone 12 is similar to the iPhone 12 Pro in terms of dimensions and screen size. If you buy a case for one, it will work with the other. But here’s the difference: the iPhone 12 replaces stainless steel rails with cheaper aluminum, and the result is lighter. The Pro model also has a matte glass back, while the 12 has a glossier finish. It’s the opposite though, as the 12 goes matte here and the Pro goes (very) glossy.

In a lovely green color, my review unit came with no visible fingerprints on the back, but that won’t happen if you go for a darker model – like the blue, black or red version.
Whichever color you choose, the colors are packed to the brim, and while the options aren’t as diverse as the iPhone 11, every shade is good.
The front of the iPhone 12 is covered by Apple’s ceramic shield. It was co-developed with Corning of Gorilla Glass fame, and Apple says it’s 4x better in drop resistance. Apple has added nano-ceramic crystals to the glass, which is said to make it stronger, and this is combined with dual ion exchange, which was previously used for scratch resistance.
Now, and this is important, the iPhone 12 is no more scratch-resistant than the iPhone 11 or worse than the ceramic shield used in newer iPhones — the technology has remained unchanged since the iPhone 12 launched. they are more receptive. to other types of damage such as scratches. I haven’t seen any scratches on mine, but that’s no excuse to ditch a screen protector if you’ve used one in the past.
Review: Apple Iphone 12 Pro Max After 3 Months
Apple skimped on the iPhone 11 screen. It’s not OLED like the Pro model, but LCD with a slightly higher resolution of 720p. There’s also no HDR support, which leaves media compatibility a bit lacking. With the iPhone 12, that all changes.
The improved screen is up there with the biggest improvements to the iPhone 12, and if you have an iPhone 11, iPhone XR or older, you’ll notice it right away. Apple may have great LCD screens, but the move to OLED is welcome, and the panel here is almost indistinguishable from the 12 Pro’s. Everything is clearer, with better contrast and generally more pleasing to the eye.
The use of OLED also enables smaller bezels around the screen and HDR in formats such as Dolby Vision and HLG. It’s sharper, now over 1080p, and better overall.
The only thing to note is that the 12 Pro model gets lighter in normal use, producing less white than gray. You’ll only notice this if you have two devices side-by-side, and both can reach 1,200 nits when playing back HDR content (according to Apple). Streaming Avengers: Endgame from Disney Plus in Dolby Vision is a good test for this screen, and you’ll notice that the extra brightness in dark scenes is heavy on bright shots and explosions.
Apple Iphone 11 Review
The 6.1-inch screen here is a good, medium size. Small enough to hold in one hand, but big enough to happily watch media and play games without feeling cramped. If you want something bigger, you’ll have to wait for the Pro Max, while those that follow are more similar to the old iPhones, like the iPhone 5, should look at the iPhone 12 Mini. Apple has done a great job of catering to all sizes, and I hope more Android manufacturers follow suit.
However, there are some areas where Apple can still improve the display experience. My main desire is a faster screen, increasing the 60Hz to 90Hz or closer to 120Hz. Apple’s ProMotion 120Hz display technology is indeed appearing in the new iPhones, though it’s exclusive to the more expensive Pro and Pro Max models.
I also wish Apple would reduce (or eliminate) the notch. While Apple has made significant improvements to the redesigned Dynamic Island notch on newer iPhones, especially the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, it still stands out on entry-level models. You get used to it yes, and after a while I forgot it was there – but more screen real estate would be nice.
5G is a huge advantage for the iPhone 12 and all models in this series. If you’re in the US, you’ll have mmWave UWB 5G support on networks like Verizon, while the UK is limited to the more common sub-6GHz bands. Annoyingly, we’re still paying the same price, even though the UK model doesn’t have the mmWave antenna.

It’s worth saying right away that while the network and Apple want you to think 5G is a reason to upgrade or buy an iPhone, I don’t think it is. Even a few years after launch, good 5G connectivity is still only available in small parts and even in supported areas. It seems quite a hit compared to 4G in terms of speed and doesn’t take a toll on battery life when you’re pushing it with downloads. Apple seems to agree, at least in part, with the Smart 5G feature bringing you back to 4G if it thinks what you’re doing doesn’t warrant that extra speed.
The use of 5G can make a difference when attending concerts, major sporting events and festivals where connectivity is essential. However, for most users, this is more of a convenience than a must.
The iPhone 12 is powered by the A14 Bionic chipset. It’s the same chip that powers the fourth-generation iPad Air. While it trails Apple’s newer A16 Bionic, it’s still an engineering triumph built on the most efficient 5nm process and perhaps the reason why battery life is about the same as the iPhone 11, despite the addition of 5G and a better screen. . It’s also robust in terms of performance, with benchmarks not too far behind newer Android flagships. I ran the synthetic CPU benchmark and got a multi-core score of 3927 and a single-core score of 1590.
Much of the power of this chip is used in parts of the phone that you don’t immediately notice. Whether it’s enabling Dolby Vision recording or AI elements in the camera, this better chip isn’t just there to make your home screen or games load faster.
