An attractive all-in-one solution. For people like me who occasionally transfer photos and videos from an SD card, Hyperdrive works well. More advanced users who rely on multiple ports and connections throughout the day should experiment extensively before relying on the hub for serious production use.

How Apple Will Convince Us To Love The Dongle
I would have liked it if Apple dedicated those two extra USB-C ports on the right side to the “legacy” ports we all know and love along with my favorite: an SD card slot. Because I work a lot with photos and especially video files. And most cameras today still use SD cards. Canon DSLRs like the 80D. Olympus and Panasonic mirrorless cameras like the new (and awesome) OM-D E-M1 Mark II and Lumix GH5. Even some “cinema” cameras like the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera. They all use SD cards to store images.
Earlier this year I brought my MacBook Pro to Paris and Iceland to film Stark Insider videos. I had to bring a bunch of cables and adapters. Connecting everything a day after the shoot to download my files wasn’t much fun. Spaghetti monster — wires everywhere. It worked though. But I wanted a better solution to deal with the lack of ports on my beastly new MBP.
That’s when I saw Sunho’s HyperDrive Thunderbolt 3 USB-C Hub on Kickstarter. It looked like this and seemed like a dream come true:
I immediately support it. A small price to pay to get an acceptable, non-hell solution for my otherwise solid 2016 MacBook Pro.

The HyperDrive finally shipped a month ago, and I was able to test it. In total, the hub has 7 ports:
Note: For those who don’t need HDMI, Sanho also makes a 5-in-1 version that is almost identical to this one, but it doesn’t have HDMI and only has 1 USB 3.1 port.
Fortunately, you can switch power to the USB-C port on the HyperDrive. Using a pass-through gives you all the extra ports on the HyperDrive (except USB-C, of course), while still allowing you to use the two native MBP USB-C ports on the opposite side. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where you want more. You devil!
I took an SD card out of my Panasonic GH5 and it was immediately recognized Transferring files was much faster than my old kludgy system that relied on crappy dongles.

Strangely, the end of HyperDrive is not quite compatible with the Mac. I chose “space gray” (love the dark finish on Apple products), but the hub finish is a bit lighter (see photo). Not too big a deal. However, if you’re a stickler for details, this can be a minor pet peeve. Aesthetics, don’t they matter?!
One more thing to watch out for: the hub is easy to slip and loosen. It only secures with two USB-C ports. At just over 3 inches long and weighing 0.8 ounces, the hub is relatively heavy — compared, say, to connecting a dongle via cable. So you have to be careful, and make sure it’s not hit.
Tip: Satechi makes a hub adapter that connects via cable (instead of mounting directly to the MacBook) to eliminate this potential problem found with Sanho. Doesn’t suit my needs, unfortunately it lacks an SD reader.
Many in reviews across the internet complain about the failure; That hyperdrive worked for a few months, then had problems. I have not experienced it until now. I will continue to use it, and if I encounter any problems, I will update this review. It goes without saying that if you are planning a big trip, you should always consider redundancy. In this case, you should still slip some old-school dongles into your bag,

Others complained about the heat. Charging via USB-C with the HyperDrive connected generates more heat than they like. For me this is not a problem. I attach it when I transfer photos and videos. When done, I disconnect it and save it. I prefer a clean workspace when not throwing away my SD cards However, if you plan to keep it connected to your MacBook Pro at all times, it’s definitely something to consider.
I missed out on the Kickstarter early bird and paid $69 for the hub. Amazon currently has a 5-in-1 version (without HDMI).
Ultimately, I recommend that you at least give HyperDrive a try if you’re looking for a way to cleanly expand the ports on your MacBook Pro. However, check it carefully during the return window. Is your laptop running out of ports when it comes to connecting more devices? Then a docking station is more than likely enough to solve your problem. Laptops usually don’t offer all ports because manufacturers want to keep them as compact as possible. Because laptop docking stations offer a wide range of connectivity options, it minimizes the problem of not having enough ports. There’s more talk about dongles now that Apple has gone and done it: All ports on the new MacBook Pro have been removed except for one: USB-C. It’s fine and right to be upset that these new MacBook Pros don’t have a standard USB-A port, MagSafe or an SD card slot.
