Yes, you can charge a 12V battery with a 5W solar panel. You need to make sure it is a 12V solar panel. Anything less will not work like a 6V or 9V solar panel.

You can use your own wires and connectors, or you can buy some to make the process a little easier. I ended up buying something called the NOCO GC018. It’s a 12V plug adapter that comes with an inline fuse and ring terminals – perfect for my 12V battery.

Then I moved some of the wire away and stripped the ends. (I stick to the stripped end of the value control terminal.)
Now my wires are ready. I can connect them to the battery terminals using ring terminals. And I can connect them to the charge control terminals using a screwdriver.
Then I use a screwdriver (actually, in my case, a screwdriver) to connect the end of the wire to the battery controller terminals. My terminal controllers have battery symbols on them as well as additions and subtractions, helping me know where each cell goes.
When all the wires are connected, my power controller turns on to show that it is connected to a good 12V battery.

My 5W solar panel finally came off after removing the wires. This makes it easier to connect to my cost management.
I connect the positive and negative wires of my charge controller to their respective terminals. Again, the terminals have a solar panel icon and are marked for positive and negative to make it easier.
But since my solar panel is inside, there is not enough sunlight to charge the battery this time.

To test myself, I took everything outside (to make sure there were no loose wires in the process) and placed the solar panel in direct sunlight.
I then cycled through the system specifications of my controller until I got to the PV current display.
It showed my 5W solar panel charging my 12V battery at a rate of 0.2 amps:
Now I can put my charging setup outside in direct sunlight. The panel charges the battery as I go about my day.

Tip: This diagram works for most sizes of solar panels (eg 10W, 20W, 50W, 80W, 100W) as long as it’s a 12V solar panel and you use the appropriate voltage meter and fuse size for the current.
According to our solar panel charge time calculation, it takes about 107.3 solar peak hours for a 5W solar panel to fully charge a 50Ah 12V lead acid battery using PWM cost control.
5W and 10W solar panels are good for slow, difficult charging of 12V batteries. They are large solar panels to hold a 12V battery charge that will charge slowly over weeks – maybe even months depending on the weather and the size of the fuel lamp.

20W and 50W solar panels are good for fast charging small 12V batteries. For example, a 20W solar panel can charge a 20Ah 12V battery for about 17 hours in direct sunlight. A 50W panel can do it in about 8 hours.
80W and 100W solar panels are good for fast charging large 12V and car batteries. If it is a 50Ah battery, it can be fully charged in 12 hours or less under direct sunlight.

Tip: You can reduce charging time by upgrading from PWM to MPPT charge controller. MPPT cost control is better, but they are more expensive.
