Samsung already makes three different types of Galaxy S20 phones: regular, Plus and Ultra. Now you can add a fourth to that mix, the Galaxy S20 FE – FE stands for “Fan Edition.” It’s the S20 with some of the more expensive features removed, but retaining some of the key features that matter. It will also be available in six different colors. Available on October 2, it will sell for $699 for the sub-6 variant on T-Mobile, AT&T, and unlocked and $749 for the mmWave version developed for Verizon.

The S20 FE has a 6.5-inch display. That puts it right between the smaller Galaxy S20 and the larger S20 Plus. Like those phones, the FE has a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth animations and graphics, but unlike those phones, its screen is completely flat and can’t scale up to a Quad HD+ resolution.

It’s still plastic on the back, but if it’s anything like the Note 20’s plastic, it’ll feel good. Samsung strongly offers color options: red, orange, lavender, mint and white. All these colors are preceded by “cloud,” Samsung’s indication that they have a matte finish that should protect fingerprints.
Otherwise, though, FE doesn’t skimp on the specs. It has a 4,500mAh battery, 6GB of RAM, wireless charging, IP68 water resistance, expandable storage and a top Snapdragon 865 processor. FE also misses out on having Samsung’s high-megapixel rear camera options, but so far those extra megapixels haven’t been the big win Samsung was hoping for at the start of the year.
Its main rear sensor is 12 megapixels with OIS, there is a 12 megapixel ultrawide and an 8 megapixel telephoto. Samsung says that the telephoto is a 3x optical zoom, and it goes on to say that it retains the 30x “field zoom” feature, although the software controls it more than the hardware. Those sensors mean the FE can’t convert 8K video, but that’s not a huge loss.
Samsung also continues its tradition of throwing oddball cameras in where it can, as the selfie camera on the FE is 32 megapixels – similar to what appears on the Galaxy A71.

The company told me that the FE version was not in its plans when it first launched the S20 series. But then the pandemic hit – Samsung’s S20 event was one of the last many tech journalists attended. Soon after the March event, the company decided to make this phone.

So depending on what happens with that discount, you could argue that there’s no reason to get the S20 when the S20 FE is around, or maybe the exact opposite.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G box doesn’t include a case, and that’s not really surprising.
What you get next to the phone is a 15W wall charger (still there), and a USB-A to C cable for charging and data transfer. We are happy that the screen protector we already used is on display.
The Galaxy S20 FE 5G is the identical twin of the LTE version we tested last year. From the dimensions of the phone to the colors, it is impossible to tell the difference between the two. We’re certainly not complaining, as we find the beauty of Fan Edition phones very appealing.
The S20 FE 5G has a polycarbonate construction with a matte finish that feels great in the hand. Samsung seems to have a trick or two up its sleeve as it continues to surprise us by delivering a premium look and feel with plastic. A good quality PC also has other advantages – it is less fragile compared to an all-glass back, lighter and also does not attract a lot of smudges and fingerprints.

The design team working on the flagship phones seems to have taken much of its design inspiration from the Galaxy S20 series. The side profile and back panel remind us of the Galaxy S20 series. Speaking of sides, the volume rocker and power button on the right side provide excellent tactile feedback. Just like its 4G sibling, the 5G variant comes in three colors: Cloud Navy, Cloud Mint and Cloud Lavender. It is also IP68 certified for water and dust resistance.
Sammy chose to put an optical fingerprint sensor in the display here. It’s faster than the ultrasonic sensor found in some Samsung flagships and has been equally reliable.
Overall, Samsung has done well on the design front. The S20 FE not only looks good, but feels premium in the hand. We have no issues regarding the power of the phone. That said, we hope that Samsung packs good quality protective cases in the box.
It’s a beautiful Super AMOLED panel that you get on the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G. Yes, it’s the same board we tested on its 4G sibling last year. The AMOLED screen has a resolution of 2400 × 1800 pixels and can be refreshed 120 times per second. Touch response is also fairly impressive and the flat edges should be an added bonus for many.

Unlike the flagship of Samsung 2021, it is not the same LPTO board, so you will not have to fit to save the battery. In addition, it is a great panel for consuming content. It captures vibrant colors and displays excellent contrast. The screen is also sharp and bright. If you want realistic colors, we suggest you switch to the normal color profile color ‘Natural’. By default, it is set to render images in the wide DCI-P3 color gamut and it looks great on this board. It also supports Widevine L1 and HDR 10 certification for HD and HDR content viewing.
In recent years, Samsung’s One UI has aged well. Galaxy S20 FE 5G comes on OneUI v3.0 skin based on Android 11. The latest version of OneUI offers dozens of customization features including Knox security. That said, the S20 FE 5G also comes with several pre-installed apps. Fortunately, you can not increase most of them. If not, they may go into deep sleep so they don’t eat into the system’s resources.
