Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5g Review: Business As Usual For Samsung
Positioned between the affordable Galaxy S21 and the super-premium S21 Ultra sits the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus. Most of the phone’s hardware is reminiscent of the Galaxy S20 Plus. But does the Galaxy S21 Plus, with an updated design and a slightly lower price, do enough to feel like a new device worth your money?
Without its little brother’s ultra-compact or countertop approach to specs at an affordable price, the Galaxy S21 Plus isn’t exactly remarkable in this generation. However, it is the middle child in Samsung’s flagship portfolio that a large number of Samsung Premium customers will be interested in. Find out if this is the right phone for you
About this Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus review: I tested the Exynos model Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus over a period of six days. It runs One UI 3.1 on the December 2020 security patch.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus has a new design that only attracts attention. The new look is definitely bolder than Samsung’s previous designs and might not be to everyone’s taste. Still, I’m a big fan of the Brush Phantom Violet colorway I’m using for the review, and there’s no doubt that Samsung’s Palm improves in terms of detail and quality. It is a very well built smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus Review: A Big Screen Phone That Gets The Big Things Right
There are Gorilla Glass protections on the front and back of the handset, which provide strong protection against drops and cracks. The glass can be a bit scratchy, but that is normal in the premium segment of the market. It contrasts with the regular Galaxy S21 with its “glassy” back. There’s also an IP68 rating for water and dust protection, which has been standard on Samsung flagships for generations.
As far as security is concerned, the phone features an in-display fingerprint reader that works quite impressively. Facial recognition is also supported via the front camera and works slightly faster than the fingerprint scanner. While both are fast and accurate, I didn’t experience any issues unlocking the phone. It’s worth noting that face unlocking is all software-based and is not as secure as hardware-based alternatives.

For audio enthusiasts, there’s no going back to the beloved headphone jack. But the phone supports SBC, AAC, aptX, LDAC, and Samsung’s scalable Bluetooth audio codecs for wireless headphones and the like. The phone’s stereo speaker setup looks great and provides good stereo separation. Just don’t expect pounding basslines from these small, recessed drivers. FM radio is also included, if you still like music the old fashioned way.

The display of the Galaxy S21 Plus is excellent and not only in terms of quality. The essentially bezel-less design and cutout for the selfie camera are hallmarks of Samsung’s latest premium design ethos.
Samsung has reduced the screen resolution from QHD+ (3,200 x 1,440) to FHD+ (2,400 x 1,080) this generation to save costs. However, for most consumers this won’t make any difference as some older Galaxy S handsets default to FHD+ software resolution by default. With a native 120Hz refresh rate, support for HDR10+ content and the brilliant AMOLED technology behind it, Samsung’s display capabilities are as impressive as ever. However, unlike some competing handsets, you can’t force all apps to use the silky smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Instead, the refresh rate is constantly locked in adaptive mode.
Whether you’ll miss or like the lack of curved glass comes down to personal preference. Personally, I don’t mind a slight bend on a device of this size to make operation easier. At the same time, however, the flat design is better for media and game playback as content no longer gets lost and distorted at the edges of the screen.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus, like the rest of the range, is powered by the latest 5nm flagship silicon. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 will appear in the US and select Asian markets, while the rest of the world will get Samsung’s Exynos 2100. Combined with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of fast UFS3.1 internal storage, you will want for nothing. Here for the show. Unfortunately, Samsung has removed the microSD expansion slot from its entire Galaxy S21 range.
We extensively tested and compared the performance of the Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 powered Galaxy S21 Ultra. These results also mirror the Galaxy S21 Plus. In previous years, there was a large gap between the two chip makers, resulting in two levels of performance for Galaxy S owners. The good news is that the gap has narrowed, with both phones delivering almost identical performance for most applications. The Snapdragon 888 maintains a significant lead when it comes to gaming, but even here the performance delta is not as large as in previous years.
The Exynos 2100-powered Galaxy S21 Plus was a whopping 90 seconds in the SpeedTest G benchmark times, with an average of 101 seconds over 10 consecutive runs. This puts it in about the same ballpark as the Galaxy S21 Ultra model benchmarked below. However, in general, peak performance with this chip is much better than sustained performance.
While day-to-day performance has largely felt like a solved problem for a few generations, at least on premium smartphones, apps still feel a little better when they move to these 5nm chipsets. Everything ran very smoothly on the Galaxy S21 Plus variant I tested, from web browsing and HEVC video playback to 3D game recording.

Popular graphics benchmarks like 3DMark even recommend running these new tests, as the Mali-G78 outperforms its old scoring model. As much debate as there is about the merits of the Snapdragon versus the Exynos models, both offer the next-generation performance that enthusiast consumers crave.
The Galaxy S21 Plus also supports 5G sub-6GHz and mmWave networks. Unfortunately I don’t live in an area with 5G coverage to be able to test it. However, based on our experiences with the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Ultra, we already know that the fully integrated 5G modem of the Snapdragon 888 performs strongly. Of course, your mileage with 5G data speeds will ultimately depend on your location and carrier coverage.
The Galaxy S21 Plus offers exceptional battery life, just like the rest of the Galaxy S21 family. The 4,800 mAh battery can easily last a whole day with intensive use, such as taking photos, recording videos and playing light games on the go. Most users can easily see two full days of light usage, such as surfing the web and checking email.
If you’re looking for numbers, the Exynos Galaxy S21 Plus lasted four hours and 18 minutes on our ultra-fast G benchmark on a loop. This is a very good result. For comparison, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra lasted three hours and 39 minutes, and the OnePlus 8T survived for three hours and 51 minutes.

Paradoxically, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus does not come with a charger. While there are real environmental reasons in favor of this move, the complicated USB-C charging situation is likely to leave many consumers with headaches.
The handset can be powered with older chargers from various brands, but to get fast 25W charging speeds you’ll need to use one of Samsung’s 25W or 45W USB-C Super Fast Charging branded plugs (article linked above for more information. Check out the info or our 45W adapter review here). We also tested a wide selection of third-party chargers, most of which charge at 15W. The exception is the Eleject 45W Super Fast Charging Plug, which supports the required USB Power Supply Programmable Power Supply (USB PD PPS) profile to charge at full speed to charge. Finally, fast charging the Galaxy S21 Plus will be a bit tricky for most consumers.
15W wireless charging is also a good option for short-term charging during the day. However, Samsung’s technology is starting to lag behind its 30W fast wireless charging speed, which is quickly catching up with the competition. The Galaxy S21 Plus doesn’t charge wirelessly fast enough to be a viable alternative to fast wired charging, which is a bit of a shame when there’s no plug in the box. telephone
