Samsung Galaxy A51 Smartphone Review – Samsung is bolstering its A-series lineup with new models, the Galaxy A71 and Galaxy A51, which it announced earlier this month. The Galaxy A51 has already been launched in India at a starting price of Rs. 23, 999. This new smartphone brings several updates to the Galaxy A50s (Review) to keep the series fresh and relevant.
According to Samsung, the Galaxy A51 is one of the first phones in the series to feature an Infinity-O display and a macro camera. Aside from these highlights, it shares many of the same features as its predecessor, including its AMOLED display, processor and design aesthetic. There isn’t much competition at this price point, except for the Redmi K20 Pro (Review) and the Redmi K20 (Review), which could be a plus for Samsung.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Smartphone Review
The body of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has a similar design to the Galaxy A50s. We have a full polycarbonate body, which is only 172 grams light and very thin, with a thickness of only 7.9 mm. The glossy body is prone to picking up fingerprints, but they weren’t very noticeable on our Prism Crush Black unit. The back is also a bit slippery, but thankfully Samsung provides a case in the box.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Great Screen And Price, But The Rest Is Just Okay
The biggest change is the Infinity-O display, which we’re seeing for the first time on a Galaxy A-series phone. It’s basically a single hole in the top center of the screen, similar to what we saw on the Galaxy Note 10+ ( Review). Samsung may not have changed the body design too much, but having a perforated screen gives this phone a premium look that we appreciate. The Galaxy A51 uses a Super AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution that offers vibrant colors and good brightness. It looks amazing from the front thanks to the slim bezels all around.
The placement of the buttons is ergonomic and on the right side we have a tray for two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. At the bottom we have the usual headphone jack, the USB Type-C port and the speaker panel. The back of the Galaxy A51 has a visible camera bump, but now there’s a fourth camera. The ball doesn’t come out too much, which is good.
The Galaxy A51 ships with the usual accessories, including a 15W fast charger, a Type-C cable, an earpiece, a SIM removal tool, and a case.
Samsung stuck with the same Exynos 9611 processor as the Galaxy A50s, which feels a bit weak in 2020 and at this price. The Galaxy A51 is available with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM and both variants have 128GB of internal storage. Other specs include dual 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC and FM radio. The usual sensors are present and this phone is also Widevine L1 certified. The Galaxy A51 supports Samsung Pay, so you can use it to make contactless payments.
Galaxy A51 Review: Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: A Capable Performer
The software running on this phone is Samsung’s One UI 2.0 based on Android 10. The new version looks and feels similar to the previous versions of One UI we’ve used before, but Samsung has tweaked it a bit. adjustments to improve the user experience. Changing your wallpaper is now much easier as there is a dedicated menu for this instead of going to the Themes app.
Other minor changes include the placement of app permission access notifications, which are now displayed at the bottom of the screen instead of in the middle. The “Device Maintenance” sub-menu also has a new look; You can now track battery usage over the past seven days, not just since the phone was fully charged; and now you can change app home screen icons, default bookmark or camera shortcuts for DnD or flash changer.
There’s still some pre-installed bloatware, including third-party apps and some of Samsung’s own, like Samsung Shop, but most of it can be removed. Samsung has also added some India-specific features to the Galaxy A51, such as the capacity. to organize your SMS messages in the form of visual cards, multilingual predictive typing and Smart Crop, which aims to identify the most relevant part of the screenshot and allows you to crop it with a single click. We found that the Smart Crop function works best if there is an image in the screenshot.
In terms of everyday use, the Galaxy A51 is very similar to the Galaxy A50. The thin and light form factor is something we really liked. Navigating the interface was relatively quick, but it didn’t feel very smooth. There were a few instances where we noticed some lag in system animations. The benchmarks were consistent; along with what you get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 or 665 SoC. At the price Samsung is asking for this phone, that’s a bit of a bargain.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: A Decent Mid Range Samsung Smartphone
In AnTuTu, we got a score of 1,86,220, while in the GFXbench T-Rex test we managed 42 fps. The back of the phone did get a bit warm while gaming and running stressful apps, but it was never uncomfortable. Fortunately, the Exynos 9611 SoC is very competent in graphics. PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends ran well with decent frames.
Biometric authentication works well, but is a bit slow. The in-display fingerprint sensor takes a while to authenticate you and unlock the phone, and it’s the same story with facial recognition.
The Galaxy A51 supports Dolby Atmos, but only if you have wired headphones connected. Audio quality is average with the included headphones, but this phone sounds better with high-end headphones. The speaker isn’t too loud from the bottom, but it’s good enough for personal listening. The screen is one of the best aspects of this phone. The lighting is very good and the colors look vivid, which makes viewing any content very enjoyable.
Samsung used a 4,000mAh battery for the Galaxy A51, and it posted a decent 14 hours and 55 minutes in our HD video loop test. We easily managed to get through a full day of regular use, with enough power to get us through another half day. Fast charging is available, and we were able to charge the battery up to 67 percent in an hour. It took a little over two hours to fully charge. It’s relatively fast, but not as fast in this segment as the Redmi K20 Pro, which charges up to 80% in an hour.
Samsung Galaxy A03s Smartphone Review: Cheap Phone, Good Call Quality
Samsung has added a new 5-megapixel camera to the triple camera setup of the Galaxy A50s. These include a 48-megapixel primary sensor; 12-megapixel wide-angle camera; and a 5-megapixel depth sensor.
In One UI 2.0, the camera app has been slightly redesigned and now has slightly different icons. Most of the shooting modes are also combined in the “MORE” menu, but you can add them to the main viewer interface if necessary.
The main camera takes 12-megapixel photos by default, but you can shoot at full 48-megapixel resolution if needed. This option is hidden in the aspect ratio menu. In good light, the Galaxy A51 was able to capture detailed photos of objects in the center of the frame. However, objects towards the edges usually looked a bit blurry and were relatively smoother.
In low light, the main camera captured very good colors and details were rendered very well with a lot of noise. There’s a special night mode, but we didn’t find it much different from photos taken in standard shooting mode, because the Scene Optimizer automatically adjusts settings when it detects low light.

A wide-angle camera captures the most of any scene in the frame, but produces very bad barrel distortion. Even after enabling the “Ultra Wide Lens Distortion” option, some photos still looked unnatural. Photos taken with this camera in low light looked noticeably darker and had poorer detail. Night mode doesn’t help much here.
Live focus mode blurs backgrounds for a more interesting look. Image quality is good and the depth camera helps the Galaxy A51 do a decent job of edge detection. You can adjust the blur level here, but there are no additional effects for this mode, such as spot color, etc., that we’ve seen on other Galaxy phones.
Close-ups also turned out great. The focus speed is adequate in good lighting conditions and we were able to take some good photos. When you use a macro camera, you can get much closer to your subject. The colors weren’t bad and the sensor captures some detail.
The Galaxy A51 can shoot video up to 4K, but without stabilization. The video quality is not bad if recorded in good light, but in low light the clips are grainy and the details are weak. You get stabilization at 1080p, but there’s also a noticeable glare effect when walking as a result. Continuous autofocus is also a bit slow.
