Peaky Blinders Review Season 1 – I don’t know why, but I find myself fascinated by British history. Maybe it was in the early 1000’s or something like during World War 2… It seems the British have always had an interesting history to them. So it was no surprise (more than a year ago) that I would be interested in a show about British gangsters. The questions is … will it show any good? Now that I’ve finally sat down to watch the show’s first season, I’m ready to tell you.
The show is set in 1919 Birmingham and follows a gang called the Peaky Blinds led by Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and how he tries to reunite the gang with his family members. But he runs into some trouble because of an Irish detective (Sam Neill) who comes to town because of some stolen guns, which the blind men allegedly stole. And I won’t say anything else because there are so many elements to the plot of this show that I don’t want to spoil because it’s interesting and needs to be experienced. It’s true, I think the plot for the show is really great. The plot has just the right amount of drama without worrying about repeating itself completely. Much of that is thanks to the show’s excellent writing and the incredible amount of suspense created from events and character interactions.
Peaky Blinders Review Season 1
All the characters in this show are fully Sanskritized and all are very likable. What’s also great is that you get to know them all so well in the first episode which is something most shows don’t manage. Cillian Murphy is fantastic as Tommy Shelby, a gang leader who was at war years ago, so you can expect him to be a bit broken. And Murphy gets this right. Sam Neill also does a wonderful job as the detective who comes to Birmingham, playing a man who is both emotional and sympathetic. I mean, the guy is technically just doing his job, even though he’s doing it in a less than ethical way. Sure, his Irish accent can be a little off on occasion, but the overall performance is great. British actor Paul Anderson plays Arthur, Tommy’s brother, and is also terrifying. The last person I want to mention is Annabelle Wallis who plays Grace, a barmaid at Tommy’s bar. Yes, he is very gay in his role too. All the actors are great in their roles. Nothing more to say about it.

An interesting thing to note about the soundtrack for the show is that they pulled a Tarantino for it. I mean any time they use a mix of songs, whether it’s from a rock band or songs from other movies. A big part that I noticed had something to do with Nick Cave. Either it will be a song from your work (both solo and with the Bad Seeds) or it will be from a film you wrote with Warren Ellis. Sure, there are other bands like The White Stripes, but they are most closely related to Nick Cave. Hell, the show’s theme song is “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (sidenote: one of my favorite Nick Cave songs). But yeah, even though I’d say it’s a weird tone for a historical film, I think it works for this show. I think it is because the songs used were well chosen by the crew working on the show.
The show was created by Steven Knight who also directed the movie “Locke”, which I really enjoyed. He also wrote the movie “Oriental Promises” which I just reviewed. And while he didn’t direct any episodes of the show, he did write some of them. And like I said, the writing in the show is amazing. And the guidance of different people taking up that mantle was great. Some shots look pretty standard, but then there are scenes where the cinematography is pretty good.
This measurement is usually the easiest for me because I have a basis to tell what I read from my usual locations. But this time it’s a little different as it hasn’t received mainstream attention like other shows. Then I’d say Metacritic is out of the game. On Rotten Tomatoes, however, the season has an 86% positive rating. And the show has an overall score of 8, 8/10 on imdb.com and is ranked #86 on the “Top 250 TV” list.
“Peaky Blinders” is a great British show with a great story, fantastic acting, great soundtrack, great direction and great writing. Time for my final score.

One of the most powerful gangs at the time was the Peaky Blinders, run by war hero Thomas Shelby and his family. But Thomas has bigger aspirations than just running the streets. When a gun case is lost, you know an opportunity to improve the world because crime can pay, but the right business pays better. Trying to rid Britain of his crime is Inspector Chester Campbell, who arrives from Belfast to try to achieve that goal.

Time to put the kids to bed and stay up late. The show takes place just after World War I and goes through World War II. The best thing about this show is that even though it’s not a family show, it’s about family, gangsters and they don’t quit. The show takes place in the United Kingdom and will actually make you want to be a gangster in the 1920s. I know because I’ve always loved the 20’s, but this show makes me want to be a gangster. The Shelby family is a gypsy family that seeks every opportunity to move forward in the world; In any significant way, I might add.
If you want a taste of UK in the 20s and escape into the world of gangsters then this is the show for you. This show does not disappoint in any way and you will be addicted. Have fun!

Peaky Blinders Season 5 Episode 6 Finale Review
I know it’s like discovering a new singer, telling everyone about her, then realizing it’s Adele, but I’ve discovered this great new show that you all really should be watching, and that’s Peaky Blinders (BBC2). When you write about television for a living – please feel free to join my whole family in thinking about how it’s a good job anyway – you see a lot of awful programs. But there’s not enough time to see them all, and sometimes the big guns fall through the cracks: The West Wing just wasn’t going to happen for me—too many moments, too much commitment. But what a treat it is to jump into Peaky Blinders, especially at this late stage. Not only does this series provide one of the bleakest and most exciting hours of the TV week, but it has given me three previous series to watch over Christmas.
