But recently, I’ve started to change my attitude and open myself up to the possibility of having a phone battery for me. I travel a lot and keep finding my gadgets nearly dead after a long day on the road. My criterion is that it should be small and easy to fit in a bag, but not so small that it’s easy to lose. This isn’t possible, and it should work on a lot of different devices—not just my iOS device. The price must also be less than $100. I started hearing good things about the Mophie JuicePack Powerstation. I finally bought it before my trip to San Francisco for WWDC 2012 so I could try it myself. And after using JuicePack to recharge my iPhone 4 and third-generation iPad for the past month or so, I’m satisfied with the purchase.

The current version of the Mophie JuicePack Powerstation is basically “just” a 4000mAh external battery. The previous version of the device had a 2000mAh battery, which according to Mophie doubles the battery life of the iPhone. The 4000mAh version is twice that
. The battery comes in a case that supports any USB charging device, so it’s not limited to iOS devices—you can also charge Kindles, Android devices, and a number of other USB-pluggable accessories. The JuicePack’s charging output can reach 2.1 amps, making it suitable for charging even the third-generation iPad (it’s notoriously long to charge lower output USB plugs).

The device itself charges via micro USB. You can plug it into a standard USB wall charger (which I have plenty of, as all iDevices I’ve owned for years) or your computer, assuming it’s a high-power port. You’ll need to provide your own cables for any devices you wish to charge, but they are reasonable. Different devices may require different connectors. The standard 30-pin USB connector for iPod, iPhone, and iPad plugs into the standard JuicePack USB port just fine. But you can’t use a standard USB port to charge the JuicePack with a male-to-male cable. Micro USB for charging itself, and standard USB for charging other devices.
Mophie Powerstation Plus 4x (7000 Mah)
Since the JuicePack can discharge quite a lot of power at once, charging the device is very easy. I was often able to charge my iPhone 4 from nearly dead (about 10 percent battery) to 100 percent in about two hours with plenty of capacity left in the JuicePack. (There are four indicator lights to show the current status of the JuicePack battery, and after charging the iPhone once, three lights remain).
This means you can charge multiple small devices on a single charge, which is always great. But if you use it with something with a really big battery like an iPad, you’ll only get one charge. You also won’t get a full refund. Mophie explains this on their website, but be aware—in my tests, JuicePack was able to charge my third-generation iPad to about 25 percentage points in two hours while the iPad was idle, and about 15 percentage points. an hour when I actively use the iPad. I was impressed by how fast JuicePack was able to do this, yet it drained the entire battery (not to mention getting very hot). But if your iPad’s battery is low and you can’t wait to find a wall charger, JuicePack is sure to get the job done—and pretty quickly.
While I really like this gadget, there are a few things that could be improved if Mophie were to work harder. Basically, the JuicePack doesn’t have pass-through charging capabilities, so you can’t charge it
Devices connected to it simultaneously. (As someone who is obsessed with efficiency, this was a bummer, but not a deal breaker.) And it might be good if Mophie could offer one

Version for iPad power users. But all things considered, I’m happy with the current trade-off in terms of capacity vs. size because I mostly use it to increase the capacity of my iPhone.
Overall, JuicePack Powerstation is a simple product that is simple and easy to use. It’s also small and convenient (for its high capacity, it’s only 4.4 ounces and about the size of a deck of cards) and doesn’t look dirty either. Of course, there are plenty of other battery packs for iDevices, but most are lower capacity and/or built into the iPhone case—not so great for use with other devices. And even those that don’t fall into those cases tend to be limited. I have friends who have the type that plugs directly into the 30-pin connector on your iPhone, and they have their own issues (lack of broad compatibility, having to use their own charger, more missing parts).
For just under $80, the JuicePack Powerstation got me what I wanted with fewer extra features. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others looking for a simple external battery solution for their gadgets.
