As luck would have it, the Marvel Universe Abomination figure I ordered from Amazon earlier this month turned out to be Hasbro’s Marvel Universe A-Bomb variant. Find out when it actually arrived. There was zero chance I would have paid out the wazoo for this figure, but I was very happy to get her for the $11.99 shipped I ended up paying. Of course, it would be a mess if the MU A-Bomb action figure turned out to be a dud. Luckily, this Marvel Universe A-Bomb review is one where I get to talk about an amazingly awesome action figure…

From the Marvel Universe’s own Rhino mold), I’m worried. And make no mistake: A-Bomb is definitely a remake of the typical Marvel Universe Abomination figure. However, Hasbro really exceeded expectations with this A-Bomb variant, creating an almost entirely fresh and unique character.

Marvel Universe Abomination Action Figures

At first I thought Hasbro would paint the Marvel Universe Abomination action figure blue and give it a new head. But while A-Bomb has a brand new head (with a totally cool ‘beard’ made out of black sticks), that’s not the only difference to him!

Hasbro created new ridged “monster forearm guards” for A-Bomb that are unique to him and help distinguish him from the MU Abomination. Hasbro also gave A-Bomb a completely different hand with giant fingers and creepy thumbnails that look a lot more terrifying and weird than the Abomination’s regular old fingers. Hasbro even painted A-Bomb’s nails! It’s a tiny dab of paint, but it adds an important pop of color and makes the Marvel Universe 4-inch A-Bomb figure feel more detailed than it is without it.

I was a little skeptical about what expression Hasbro would give to the shell body molds common to the Rhino, Abomination, and A-Bomb figures, but it’s actually more flexible than I thought. The A-Bomb action figure’s ball-jointed hips and shoulders have a wider range of motion than I expected, making him the non-articulated piece of plastic I feared. MU ABomb can even strike and balance in some extreme poses thanks to his massive feet (hello for ankle levers, David Warner!).

Considering the molds they had to work with, I think Hasbro did a pretty amazing job making this MU A-Bomb figure as true as possible. The texture of his torso isn’t exactly ridiculously accurate, but the important thing is that it’s a good looking facsimile. I’m still confused that A-Bomb is running around wreaking havoc naked, but that’s true of his comic book appearance, so kudos to Hasbro for not sticking trunks on A-Bomb or something equally ridiculous.

The 4-inch Marvel Universe A-Bomb figure has the same flaw that most big, bulky monster-like figures have: his expression is limited in some places by his sculpt. The limited expression that bothers me the most is the lack of articulation on A-Bomb’s right neck – his head rotates diagonally to the side instead of straight, and A-Bomb can’t really look up or down when facing forward.

Given the design of A-Bomb’s shoulders and the placement of his head, this would be difficult to pull off correctly, resulting in Hasbro calling it quits. This makes it very difficult to get an A-ball. The Marvel Universe thinks he’ll appear when he’s not moving forward.

Also, I’ve had issues with the A-Bomb cover monsters’ foreheads and fists popping out when the A-Bomb is elbowed. I like that Hasbro gave the A-Bomb action figure unique “arm guards,” but somehow they have to be held firmly so they don’t pop up when you try to display the figure.

After the Marvel Universe A-Bomb variant, which was initially highly sought after and expensive in the aftermarket (with prices rising to $80), the figure’s “value” changed as the review case packing him hit stores one by one. You can get a Marvel Universe A-Bomb for around $20 on ebay right now, which is about as cheap as an A-Bomb will ever get since this figure doesn’t ship back. I suspect this will be one of the more expensive 4″ Marvel Universe figures on the aftermarket in the long run.

Marvel Universe Abomination Action Figures

Overall: While A-Bomb isn’t a must-have figure for me as an action figure, Hasbro did a pretty great job of making Marvel Universe A-Bomb a “rare” figure that I’d be happy to own. . A-Bomb’s choice of blue is edgy and catchy, his accent is much better than you’d expect, and there’s an impressive amount of “new” compared to the MU Abomination image. With Hasbro’s Marvel Legends 6-inch figure line ending this year and no Hulk movie on the horizon, I doubt we’ll see a better A-Bomb than this anytime soon (if ever). If you love the character or just how cool A-Bomb looks, be sure to pick up this Marvel Universe 4-inch A-Bomb figure if you get a chance – he has his faults, but he’s well done and fun. It’s not often that I write a review of a figure weeks after I’ve repainted it, but that’s tonight’s topic: Marvel Legends Abomination Build-A-Figure. This value was not issued alone
