I had a chance to spend some time with the 2020 Infiniti QX50 to see how the InTouch and CarPlay infotainment systems work with the dual screens that dominate the center of the dash, and I was very impressed with the performance and ease of use.

The 2020 QX50 is available in five trim levels, starting at $37,250 for the base Pure trim and reaching just over $60,000 for the full Autograph trim. All trims are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with the latter costing an extra $2,000. Part of what sets the Infiniti apart here is that the hardware buttons have thankfully not been sacrificed in favor of full-screen controls. The bottom screen of the InTouch system is surrounded by hardware controls, including climate control controls on the left and right sides, as well as some hardware buttons for audio and a bottom button just below the CD drive.
There are also some quick access hardware buttons to jump between the main InTouch home screen, the audio screen and the climate screen, where only a few digital adjustments can be made, such as manual fan speed, but almost everything is accessible there as well. hardware buttons on both sides of the screen. Add in conventional steering on the steering wheel and you can achieve a great deal with feel alone, which is fantastic.
The top screen is largely devoted to integrated navigation, which is standard on the Essential trim and above and optional on the second-level Luxe trim, and this is also where CarPlay appears. Here too, Infiniti offers the option of interacting with the content, which supports both touch directly on the screen and indirect control via a button and some buttons on the central console. I generally prefer to use touch or voice to interact with CarPlay and the integrated navigation system, but it’s nice to have another indirect method available for quick adjustments or for those who prefer it more often.

Infiniti’s InTouch software bears some striking similarities to parent company NissanConnect infotainment system I’ve seen in the Leaf and Altima before, but it’s enhanced with some higher-end features and, of course, optimized for a dual-screen setup.
The audio setup is very similar to the NissanConnect system I’ve used in other cars, with a relatively simple layout and flexible bottom menu bar for setup and quick access to the audio sources you want. SiriusXM content in particular looks great with colorful channel logos and album art visible on screen. The interface for terrestrial radio stations is a little simpler, but still offers a clean look with station and song information when available, as well as HD radio support.
The built-in navigation works well with 3D city views, route guidance, exit signs and different views available to customize the navigation experience, although the overall look could use some updating. There is support for street and satellite view, real-time traffic and Google destinations, offering an improved POI search experience compared to the built-in system database. Map updates are also available. The overall look of the maps isn’t as modern as you see on Apple or Google Maps for example, but functionally it’s a very solid system. Of course, with CarPlay and Android Auto, you might not want to use the built-in navigation at all, but it’s there if you want or need it.

In addition to the twin screens in the center console, there is also a digital display for the driver between the pair of analog gauges. CarPlay on the 2020 QX50 requires a wired connection, which is a little unfortunate at a time when more and more luxury brands, including Audi, BMW, and Porsche, support wireless CarPlay, and it will soon spread to more mainstream brands from there. such as Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler. Infiniti tells me that wireless CarPlay is coming in the “future,” but it would be nice to see it early on.

Lack of wireless support aside, CarPlay works very well on the dual-screen InTouch system, and it’s great that the top screen can be dedicated to CarPlay, while native features such as audio and other features remain fully visible and accessible on the bottom screen. . The upper 8-inch screen provides plenty of room for the CarPlay interface, and everything looks big and bright, sitting pretty high up on the dash so it’s not too far from the driver’s line of sight.
I had no problem reaching all parts of the CarPlay touch control screen, but you can use the control buttons on the center console to navigate through the various elements of the interface and select the one you want.
The flexibility of the dual screens and the redundancy of many of the native system functions between them really allows CarPlay to shine, as you really don’t have to worry about switching it to access the Infiniti system. Some adjustments will trigger a brief overlay on the CarPlay screen, but other than that, you can freely adjust the audio, climate, and car settings without disrupting the CarPlay experience.
All QX50 trims come with four USB ports, labeled one USB-C and one USB-A on the front of the center console next to the cup holders, with both ports supporting data connections for CarPlay. The other two ports are USB-A ports for charging only, with one in the center console area and one on the back of the console providing power for rear passengers.

One downside is the lack of good phone storage space, with little space near the front USB port aside from a pair of cup holders and a small storage tray that isn’t big enough to fit a phone in without getting in the way of at least one from . cup holders. Storing the phone in the center console compartment is also an option, but it requires more effort to get in and out of the compartment and involves running the USB cable through the compartment, so it would be better if the USB port was inside that. The storage supports data transfer so you can fit everything inside. Wireless phone charging is not available on any QX50 trim.

Infiniti may have been late to the CarPlay game, but it arrived in a big way in the 2020 QX50, as well as the Q50, Q60, and QX80, all of which share nearly identical dual-screen layouts and a host of hardware controls.
