Each pixel in the U7G series has a different number of internal dimming zones (groups of LED backlights that can be directly dimmed or brightened), so performance may vary slightly from model to model. For the SDR test, we used Hisense’s “Hole Day” picture mode. For the HDR test, we used the TV’s “HDR Theater” picture mode We chose these image types because of their accuracy, but performance may vary depending on the enabled image mode. For example, you may get a brighter image with different settings, but this may compromise color temperature and overall color accuracy.
To understand the average performance of a TV, we use a standard ANSI checkerboard pattern for most of our basic contrast tests. We also use white and black windows from 2% to 90% to test how contrast holds up when displaying different brightness levels.
Our peak brightness measurements are taken using continuous windows to represent the TV’s peak brightness over a continuous period of time. Certain illuminants (such as short reflected light beams) can achieve high levels of brightness, but not for sustained periods of time.

The U7G pairs these highlights with deeper-than-average black levels that, crucially, retain their depth even when the TV is receiving an HDR signal. In fact, one of the most impressive aspects of the U7G’s performance is its ability to control contrast despite the small amount of bright internal bands. Even when the TV displays HDR content with bright highlights, the darkest parts of the picture remain dark and do so without any brightness.
Hisense has been enthusiastic about the U7G’s gaming capabilities ahead of its release, and frankly, I share Hisense’s enthusiasm. The U7G has an impressive array of gaming-related hardware and software that will help it take advantage of next-generation gaming on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
