This is Dexter, Brittany Spaniel, 6 years old from Kentee Pasek. Dexter turned his head as he walked down the street on his hind legs next to Pasek.
“He’s a great dog,” one visitor said shortly after taking a photo of Dexter on Wednesday. Others stared across the street after parking.
“Everybody in town knows him,” Pasek said. “In fact, now they know him more than they know us.”
Dexter is now known worldwide, with over 60,000 followers on Instagram and over 215,000 viewers on TikTok as of Thursday – you can find him @dexterdogouray on both platforms. Pasek posts videos of her dog almost daily.

On Wednesday’s daily walk, a student in the group who passed by the school asked Pasek why Dexter walks like a human.
“Because he only has two legs, it works really well,” Pasek told the boy. “He had an accident.”
In 2016, shortly after the family received Dexter, he ran away from home. While sniffing deer in a nearby park, Dexter burst into the street. A truck ran over his front legs.
“We didn’t think he would make it,” Pasek said. She remembered Dexter putting his head on her lap in the car on the way to the vet in Montrose.

She said the vet believes Dexter has a chance. He had to amputate one of Dexter’s legs and surgically insert a pin into the other leg.
After a few surgeries and a lot of rehabilitation, Dexter started doing something strange. Instead of walking on three legs, he began to adapt to using his hind legs to move.
One day Dexter went for a walk with Pasek’s mother. Someone passing through downtown Ouray spotted the strange sight and posted a Tik Tok video about it.
That video went viral and Dexter’s internet star was born. Dexter’s video got 5 million likes on Tik Tok. One of the videos was up

“I’m not a marketing expert,” says Pasek. “It’s not something I used to like, hey this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. It just appears.”
Pasek manages both Dexter’s accounts on Tik Tok and Instagram. It became a full-time job for her, which she needed. Pasek lost his full-time job managing a hot water pool in town, which was downsized due to the pandemic.
“My life has changed dramatically,” she said. “Dexter wakes me up in the morning. The movie and the online chat got me moving again and helped me to work outside.”
Pasek said she hasn’t tried much to earn Dexter’s story. She said she just wanted to share her perspective with the world, especially in this strange time.

“His attitude was always: hey, everything is great and I think if you think everything is great … then we should be able to get out of this as a world,” she said.
