You don’t have to break the bank to buy an OLED TV, the Philips OLED754 is a perfect example of that. Far from shopping, we’re used to seeing OLEDs come at bargain prices, but the market is changing with cheap OLEDs slowly becoming more common. The Philips OLED754 is a cutting-edge TV which has won our awards 2020 title as the best TV under £1,000.
Philips’ entry-level OLED is one to look at if you’re looking for a better picture without the high price – especially on the 55-inch size we tested (though there’s also a 65-inch version available).
So how exactly did they do it? Look closely and you will see some cuts. The P5 image engine is a generation later, which can be found in the new Philips 804 and 854 models. There’s no Bowers & Wilkins sonic sophistication here like in some of Philips’ drops, resulting in a static sound. But the view it provides is easily on the right side of the price, and you also get three-sided Ambilight, a long-range lens lighting system.

Fortunately, despite the low price, you get two types of dynamic HDR support here: HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Many more expensive TVs don’t support both, so it’s a bit of a struggle from Philips.
The LG B9 is probably the closest competitor to this TV in terms of picture quality, but that model doesn’t have support for two types of HDR and the Ambilight light, while still costing four frames.
It’s worth noting that UK Philips TV brands and US Philips brands are run differently, so there are no US partners for this TV.
When it comes to cosmetics, the OLED754 celebrates minimal performance. The frame is completely thin, around the panel that sits on the two edge points. Don’t prepare to pop the noise directly in front of him, though: there’s no difference ‘twixt screen and boots.

Unlike the rest of Philips’ OLED fleet, the OLED754 does not use the Android smart TV OS. Instead, we get Philips’ own cut-back Saphi platform. According to Linux, it is less ambitious, although the differences work in its favor.
It provides exactly what is needed on the set of connections, namely the leading streaming apps (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Rakuten TV, YouTube), in addition to smaller apps, without any hassle or fuss.
Ambilight will be familiar enough to most. There is no difference between the use here and the more expensive Philips models. You can use it to follow the work of the screen, or bathe your walls in beautiful colours. And if you need a light for ages, it can be combined with Philips Hue smart lighting.
As for gaming, the OLED754 is borderline OK. We measured the input at 32.8mm (1080p / 60fps) in its gaming mode. To put that into context, we generally appreciate 30ms or less.

This Philips insight is ready as soon as you support some areas. Not only is the black perfectly deep, but there is nice near-black shadow detail. This prevents the image from looking double-sided and over-colored.
Rich color, always a strong point for Philips, said. The screen delivers a wide color gamut image that is often fascinating. Run some anime in Vivid mode for full flavor.
At its best with 4K sources (such as their streaming apps or UHD Blu-ray), the PhilipsP5 image processor can also do a solid, seamless job of upscaling HD.
HDR peak brightness was measured at more than 600 nits using a 10 percent measurement window, rising to more than 700 nits with a five percent window. The latter is more indicative of how HDR brightness peaks can be used – small and often sudden. These results are lower than the actual and the largest, but are very much in line with its value.

But here’s the clincher. Philips also supports two important dynamic metadata standards: Dolby Vision and HDR10+. It is also good for HLG, post HDR standard. Only Panasonic is similar.
The light sound is good enough for playing goggleboxing. It uses two 8W downward-firing midrange drivers, supported by a 24W woofer and passive radiators at the rear. That said, it’s definitely worth investing in one of the best sound systems or a separate home theater.
If you’re looking for a real OLED bargain, this Philips is it. The picture quality is excellent – you need to spend more money to get a better picture – and the Ambilight fills every room with aurora, which is just amazing.
There are caveats: the smart OS is simple and the sound is borderline. But to be honest, there aren’t many compromises, making this a pretty good choice for 4K buyers on a budget.
