What Is The Best Free Editing Software – The explosion of user-generated video content for sites such as YouTube has led to the launch of several competing non-linear editors (NLEs) aimed at consumers, which differ in price, feature sets, and upgradeability. So how do you choose which one to use?
A good alternative is DaVinci Resolve 16 by Blackmagic Design. The software is available for free from Blackmagic, but it’s not the only affordable entry into the NLE arena, so why is it different and appealing to first-time video editing users?
What Is The Best Free Editing Software
First a little history. Originally created by Da Vinci Systems in 1985, the software was designed primarily for color grading and color correction and ran on hardware costing more than $150,000. Since Blackmagic Design acquired it in 2009 it has evolved in features and pricing model. The latest version, Solve 16, introduces a more streamlined and less complex workflow for many users, especially those new to using NLEs, to edit video.

Opening the software for the first time can be quite intimidating for those who haven’t used NLE before. The sheer number of windows and buttons can be quite intimidating. The only NLE I can think of that doesn’t introduce this kind of shock is iMovie, but that program has limitations for users who want to move their work into the professional arena.
When you open the solution, you are first greeted with a window that allows you to open an existing project or create a new one. When you open a project in the main interface, you’ll see a row of workspaces for different parts of the edit at the bottom of the window. Blackmagic calls them ‘pages’. These are called Media, Cut, Edit, Fusion, Color and Deliver and are arranged from left to right to aid workflow. You can jump between pages at any time.
The introduction of the new Cut page in Solution 16 has simplified some of the traditionally complex workflows. Adding a page with fewer options will attract many new users. It’s very easy to quickly add photos to the timeline and trim them without invoking a more complex editing page, which can get a bit complicated.
Just because you can jump between any page at any time doesn’t mean you have to use a cut page. This may seem confusing at first, but it’s done in a way that allows you to use more complex functions when you’re ready. When starting out, for example, you may find that you don’t need to use a Fusion site (for VFX work) or a Fairlight site (for audio), but inevitably you’ll probably want to use some of these sites’ features. Offer as your skills and requirements change. Another great thing about the Cut page is that there are a number of common functions available there as well. For example, there is no need to go to the Deliver page to submit files, as you can export your edit on the Cut page.

One thing you don’t get is any sort of guided workflow. Some basic knowledge is assumed, but there are many great online tutorial videos available on YouTube from channels like Learncolorgrading and JayAreTV.
As with all new versions of software, the release of Solution 16 brings many additional features and improvements. For example, with previous versions it’s easy to start editing only to realize later that key settings – resolution and frame rate – aren’t set correctly. In the past, it meant you had to start to get the best results. This is no longer an issue in Solve 16, as a new timeline can be created with the correct settings without creating a new project.
I mentioned this selling point in the previous paragraph, but what exactly does the Resolve 16 cost?…$0. Yes, that’s right, you can download and use Resolve 16 for free. There is no time-limited trial, no logo burn-in and no limit on the length of the final result.
Limitations, however most of these are not important for beginners or more advanced users. Some of the major limitations are that the free version does not offer HDR support or timelines with resolutions higher than UHD 4K. You’re limited to using a single GPU and I found render speeds to be significantly faster with the Studio version. Because if you have an Nvidia graphics card you can select the native Cuda accelerator on the Deliver page.

There are some minimum hardware requirements to address, but these are quite reasonable. (It would be great to get a definitive list of requirements from Black Magic Design, but that doesn’t seem to be available.)
To give you an idea of what’s possible, I previously ran version 14 on a 2012 MacBook Pro, and while it was a bit slow, it worked. My current setup uses an AMD Ryzen 1700x with Nvidia GTX 1070Ti with 32GB of RAM and it works fine for me. That’s not to say things wouldn’t be much faster with better hardware, but it’s a nice to have rather than a necessity.

So why does Blackmagic offer such a full-featured video editor? Well, they hope you like the free version of the solution so much that you want to buy it in their ecosystem. The Resolve Studio upgrade path costs $299, but Blackmagic sells a number of related hardware products to help you with your editing. These range from a $995 dedicated editing keyboard to a $1,025 control surface and a complete production package costs $30,805. This may seem overwhelming to people just starting out, but you should know that Resolve is also used in professional post-production facilities around the world. There are options for all budgets.
The next question is which version should you get, the free version or the studio? There is no penalty for trying the free version and then upgrading if you need the features of the studio version. Why upgrade? For me, it renders faster and time is money. I also considered some extra VFX filters added for $299 and it made sense to me.
You can upgrade the Studio version to the next version for free. I went from Studio 15 to Studio 16 without paying anything extra. Traditionally, this is the selling point for the solution.
In addition to YouTube, there is a very active user community through the Blackmagic forums, where developers and industry professionals with hundreds of years of combined experience can help you. There are always more features to add, and as the number of users to solve expands, so do the feature requests. Blackmagic is listening, hence the introduction of Cut Page and the ability to create timelines in the same project with different frame rates and resolutions.

The short answer is that it depends. I say give it a shot, after all it costs nothing to try. If you find it difficult to use, try watching some of the videos linked above. I look at some of them when new features are introduced or if I need to look at a feature I’ve never used.
There are many features you may never use, but it’s good to know they’re available if you ever need them. If you are not limited by the software, you can develop your skills as needed.
