What happens to us when we die? It’s a question that has preoccupied humanity’s brightest minds for as long as those humans have been around to ask it – and has recently been the subject of some groundbreaking scientific studies.
Now an online forum has asked the question specifically about those who were clinically dead and then returned to life, receiving hundreds of responses.

While the veracity of the answers should be taken with a grain of salt, the answers of a major study on this topic can basically be divided into three categories.
There are people who felt nothing at all; those who have experienced the light and had some interaction with another person; and those who felt they could watch what was happening while “dead” without being able to do anything.
The first group closely matches the answers of a Redditor who has officially died twice and who has recently received questions from other users on this topic.
The second group, meanwhile, seems to agree with the work of Dr. Sam Parnia, who surveyed cardiac arrest patients and found that nearly 40 percent described having some sort of “consciousness” when they were clinically dead.

Few things seem as absolute as death. But when it comes to marking the moment when a person goes from living to dead, the line is drawn a little worse.
NYU Langone’s Sam Parnia, a pulmonologist who studies CPR, notes that from then on, it takes up to 20 seconds for brain waves to go undetectable.
According to Parnia, this sets in motion a longer chain of processes that lead to brain death. “If you restart the heart, which is what CPR tries to do, you’ll gradually get the brain to function again. The longer you do CPR, those brain cell death pathways are still going on — it’s just…happening at a slightly slower rate. pace,” Parnia said

In cardiac arrest, doctors are usually unable to restore blood flow to the brain. That is why the experience of those who successfully revive is so interesting.
The story follows the extensive history of attempts to define death and understand what are commonly known as “near-death experiences.” In a 2014 study, doctors interviewed more than 100 people who had suffered cardiac arrest and had been successfully resuscitated: 39 percent described a sense of awareness, even though they couldn’t tell specific details. A woman in a similar study previously described feeling like she was floating above her body and looking at what the doctor called a “code blue.”
These cases cloud the narrative and challenge a definition that seems self-evident to most people, but is still the subject of ongoing debate. Cardiologist Haider Warraich outlines the debate in bioethics over whether decapitation, the separation of a head from its body, automatically equates to death. Warraich also mentions the case of doctors in the 19th century who wanted to distinguish between life and death by dipping needles attached to small flags into the coffins of the saints (when the flag flew, the heart beat and the person was considered alive considered).
