Before you whip out your credit card, there are a few things you need to know about Vizio’s first OLED. For one thing, it’s not as bright as quantum dot TVs in the same price range. Plus, if you’re hoping for a seamless experience on a smart platform, Vizio’s built-in SmartCast software might leave you in the lurch.

At the end of the day, the Vizio OLED gives LG a run for its money and can easily be considered a cheaper alternative to Sony’s 2020 OLED—provided you keep its limitations in mind.

Vizio OLED is available in two sizes: 55 inches and 65 inches. Our review unit was a 55-inch model purchased from an online retailer. Here’s how the two sizes compare when it comes to price:

Vizio OLED TVs include the company’s SmartCast software out of the box, as well as a redesigned version of the standard Vizio remote control.
Before testing each TV, we make sure the panel is turned on and receiving a continuous signal for at least 24 hours, giving the pixels enough time to warm up. The Vizio OLED was given the usual warm-up time before taking any readings.
For the SDR tests, we used the Vizio “Calibrated” picture setting. For the HDR tests, we also used the Vizio “Calibrated” picture setting. We chose these settings for their accuracy, but results may vary depending on image modes. We also took additional readings in the TV’s “Vivid” picture mode as a point of comparison.
We use the standard ANSI checkerboard pattern for most of our basic contrast tests—including those listed below—but we also use white and black windows from 2% to 90% to test how well contrast suppression works while displaying different brightness levels.

When it comes to inputs, the Vizio OLED is suitable for both casual users and AV enthusiasts.

Vizio OLED offers the kind of incredible contrast and color we’ve come to expect from OLED TVs, and that’s exactly what Vizio has to prove.
OLED displays offer the best overall picture money can buy thanks to their self-illuminating pixels. Impressive screen technology is directly responsible for perfect black levels, vivid color production and unparalleled viewing angle flexibility. Vizio OLED checks all these boxes, delivering sensational contrast, true color and an image that won’t diminish if you’re viewing the TV from an off-angle position.
The Vizio OLED covers about 97% of the extended DCI-P3 color gamut, and if you happen to be upgrading from a non-HDR TV, the jump in color quality is sure to be quite impressive. We’re also impressed with the TV’s ability to display dark and murky scenes, as it’s particularly good at minimizing banding.

The bottom line is that, more than anything else, Vizio needs to prove it’s capable of producing the stellar picture quality we’ve come to expect from OLED TVs in order to compete with the likes of LG and Sony. Not only has it succeeded in this task, but its success is evident as soon as you turn on the Vizio OLED. In other words: well done!

Vizio’s first OLED is ahead of the curve when it comes to next-generation performance improvements thanks to its four HDMI 2.1 ports, which will allow the TV to stay at the cutting edge of gaming and home theater advancements for years to come. (although only one of these ports is eARC-ready).
On the gaming front, the Vizio OLED supports both Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM). VRR is a software enhancement that prevents screen tearing and artifacts as a result of frame rate changes. Importantly, this ensures that what is displayed is synchronized with the animation changes in real time. ALLM, on the other hand, is a feature that allows the TV to automatically switch to its designated mode when a qualified input is selected. Simply put, it eliminates the need to manually activate Game Mode on your TV so you can enjoy the benefits of low input lag and low latency without fumbling for the remote control and visiting the settings menu. Vizio OLED has a native refresh rate of 120Hz, so not only is its motion processing built on the highest refresh rate in the industry, but eventually Vizio OLED will also be able to support 4K gaming at 120 FPS.
Like most OLED TVs before it, the Vizio OLED design is a marvel of engineering. Since the TV’s self-illuminating pixels don’t require a backlight, the panel doesn’t need to make room for any of the chunky hardware that traditional LCD/LED TVs rely on. The result is a super-slim panel that’s narrower than most smartphones at its thinnest point.

There is some space behind the panel to accommodate the TV’s interior, but not nearly as much as you’d find on a typical LED backlit TV. The entire display is supported by a metal, striking stand whose shape resembles a wave with a peak. It’s unique, attractive and understated – without a doubt one of the best TV designs we’ve seen all year.
The stand for the Vizio OLED also serves as a stand for the sound bar, should you choose to use it (and you should!). In other words, it’s refreshing to see a TV whose design is both functional and visually appealing.
While there’s no denying that the Vizio OLED offers the same incredible contrast we’ve come to expect from OLED TVs, it also shares the same brightness limitations as the TV.
Despite the stunning performance that OLED can produce, there is one area where OLED TVs fall short of their high-end LCD/LED TV counterparts: peak brightness. Vizio OLED cannot escape this fate; it gets brighter than most mid-range LED TVs, but it doesn’t come close to producing the hot highs of quantum dot TVs like this year’s Samsung Q90T. Even a budget-friendly QLED TV like this year’s TCL 6-Series can be brighter than a Vizio OLED.
Philips Oled806 (55oled806) Review: A Cool Looking, Affordable Oled
For reference, when receiving an HDR signal, we consistently clocked the Vizio OLED at around 450-550 nits in its “Calibrated” picture mode. The Samsung Q90T, on the other hand, averages around 1200 nits in HDR, and the TCL 6-Series regularly hits the 900 nits mark in HDR. The trade-off, of course, is that quantum dot TVs like the Samsung Q90T and TCL 6-Series are unable to produce near-perfect black levels due to the limitations of their panels. The Vizio OLED may only be half as bright as these TVs, but when you look at all three side by side, the Vizio OLED’s overall contrast comes out as the most impressive – even when it comes to shadow detail.
Where OLED’s limitations start to matter is in brightly lit rooms. It may be worth it to trade the rich, deep black levels of an OLED TV for the incandescent brightness of a QLED if your living room has plenty of sunlight.
It’s really all a matter of preference, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t a little disappointed with the Vizio OLED ceiling light.
