I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of Valentine’s Day for various reasons. It seems to have become another over-commercialized holiday that requires giving.

In fact, the average person spent $130 on a loved one in 2013 ( source ). And it’s only a month after Christmas?
I just don’t see the need for a specific day to show someone I love them when I do it all year round. And I really hate spending $5 on a card that will most likely end up in the trash anyway.
As long as I’m not attracted and seduced by all that romance, I think it’s perfectly fine to celebrate Valentine’s Day and give gifts to my loved ones.
Although gifts are not necessary to show love, I am a gift giver by nature, so I often show love by giving gifts.

My wife, however, is a person of words and receives love through words, so a handwritten poem or a carefully selected card will show my love for her.
Find out how your husband receives love and thus fill his/her love tank. Gifts do not always have to be material. The Five Love Languages is a great book on this topic.
So if the man in your life is looking for a gift and you need some ideas, I’ve put together a little list to help you out.
It doesn’t have to be a lot. In fact, we have a word in the south for a small gift. My mom always called them “happy”.

Many of the items from our gift cards to his favorite stores or gift cards to his favorite stores can also be good for Valentine’s Day, so I’m trying to list a variety of items here in addition to what was on the stocking list. Erin also wrote a post last year about gifts for couples that can also help.
If you’re cunning, do something to him. Have the children make something using their handprints or footprints. A handmade gift can really show how much you love another person.
But if you’re not crafty, you can share other signs of appreciation (not just gifts).
Of course, gift cards to his favorite stores or restaurants are always a good idea. His favorite candy, tools, or other items related to those hobbies (gaming, collecting, tech, etc.) and interests (sports, hunting, fishing, etc.) are great choices.

But let’s think beyond those gifts and try a few ready-to-buy items that won’t help.
Something that won’t necessarily cost you is just spending quality time together, and that should be a top priority at any time of the year.
You can go for a walk, go on a picnic together (weather permitting… or at home if not), drink coffee together and talk, cook his favorite meal (mine is cooked by Erin) and enjoy it together, etc. . Take him to his favorite restaurant or another favorite place in town. You might not necessarily enjoy eating there, but you’ll show him you care. For example, I like barbecue, but Erin doesn’t. When she takes me to a restaurant like this, I know she’s doing it because I like it and it lets me know she cares.
From Indiana Jones to The Godfather, there’s always a quintessential man movie that every man will love. Or a bit more sci-fi with Star Wars or Star Trek. Need to get in on the action with The Western Collection or The Bourne Identity? Or how about old school with Superman (Christopher Reeves) or Batman on film (Adam West) or Back to the Future or The Karate Kid?
Budget Friendly Ideas For Him On Valentine’s Day
My personal favorites are The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The list goes on and on. You can find a good movie to add to your collection without spending a fortune.

I was curious to try the shaving soap. I have the Bay Rum soap from MadeOn skin care products, but I need to get a shaving brush and a shaving bowl. I would also like to try the safety razor. Creating a collection of these items would make a great themed gift.
I also LOVE Free Reign Farms shaving soap and use it every time I shave. This is really my favorite! They have some scented men’s soaps like Hunter Camo Soap or Lumber Jack.

If your boyfriend likes to shoot, book a day at your local shooting range and have him get you cartridges or new arrows. If he likes to fish, let him go to the lake with new baits. Give him a new game if he is a gamer and let him play for a while. Send him to play 18 holes.
Treat yourself to a guilt-free and obligation-free day. Give him 24 hours off and I can almost guarantee he’ll return the favor. It’s obviously another day after your romantic dinner together.
Most guys I know always need some kind of tool to add to their arsenal or upgrade an existing tool. Personally, I need a set of wrenches (or this very compact one), a set of ratchets, a set of screwdrivers, or a set of pliers.
