A little different way. Instead of pushing big numbers like it did on the 11 Ultra, Xiaomi says it’s focused on compatibility while still packing enough core features to justify the price. A quick look at the specs reveals the usual suspects in terms of hardware, but the quad speaker setup on the Xiaomi 12 Pro is unique and not something we’ve seen on any flagship phone in India.
The Xiaomi 12 Pro is also slightly more expensive than last year’s Mi 11 Ultra, probably because it’s not in the right place. Rumors suggest that a more premium model called the 12 Ultra could be in the works and should feature a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ SoC. Now, the 12 Pro is Xiaomi’s flagship phone, and after using it for about a week, I find it pretty good. But is it better than OnePlus and iQoo flagships?

Xiaomi’s 12 Pro looks and feels very stylish and premium. The metal frame is very thin on the left and right sides of the phone, the front and back glass to connect with it. The Corning Gorilla Glass 5 frame and rear panel have a matte finish, making the device smooth. The rear camera module is made of metal and looks modern and sleek thanks to the fine lines that separate the sensors. The holes in the metal frame and all the cuts are perfectly smooth, without sharp edges or edges.
Although the Xiaomi 12 Pro is a high-quality smartphone, it does not have an official IP rating for dust and water resistance. The Xiaomi 12 Pro display offers a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, and a touch sampling rate of 480Hz. LTPO 2.0 technology allows the refresh rate to be as low as 1Hz to save power. It also has an embedded fingerprint reader. The WQHD+ resolution (3200 x 1400 pixels) makes the density 522 ppi.
The phone has a 4,600mAh battery and comes with a 120W charger in the box. There is support for 50W wireless charging and 10W wireless charging.
The Xiaomi 12 Pro runs Xiaomi’s MIUI 13, which is based on Android 12. The software includes all the important features of Android 12, including new widgets, a license manager, and a privacy dashboard (called Privacy Guard). MIUI 13 still has the usual bloatware that includes Xiaomi-branded apps and some third-party apps. And I kept getting annoying pop-up notifications urging me to update apps in the GetApps store.
The widget selector interface now looks different and takes up the entire screen. Adding a widget is a long press (or tap to release) on the home screen, then you’ll find three options at the bottom for wallpaper, widgets, and home screen settings. The implementation of changing Xiaomi widgets is a little annoying, as you need to move each one slightly (just by swinging) to activate the editing mode, which is an extra step. However, after everything was set up, it worked flawlessly. Xiaomi, like other manufacturers, has used a theme engine that changes the colors of the interface, widgets and keyboard accents based on the colors of your wallpaper.

Xiaomi 12 Pro performed as expected in benchmark tests. The phone scored 9,82,727 on AnTuTu and scored 1,237 and 3,654 on Geekbench’s single and multi-core tests, all in line with the competition. The software performance was also smooth and fluid with daily use.
The display is very bright outdoors and produces very accurate colors when using ‘Native Color’ mode. There’s also ‘Adaptive Colors’ in the Settings app, which adjusts the display’s colors based on the ambient light. Content looks crisp on the 12 Pro’s display, which is also Dolby Vision and HDR10+ certified. While content streamed on Netflix looked good, HDR videos streamed through Amazon Prime Video looked dull. Dolby Vision HDR support is something we don’t see on most Android phones.
The in-display fingerprint reader is quick and reliable to unlock the phone. During my testing, the Xiaomi 12 Pro’s screen refresh rate varied depending on the different content I watched. It’s usually locked at 60Hz when I’m playing games, 120Hz when I’m scrolling through apps or feeds in the interface, and 10Hz when I’m doing nothing. I expected the refresh rate to drop to 1Hz when using the Kindle app, but it didn’t.
My gaming experience on the Xiaomi 12 Pro was excellent. When playing games for a long time, the phone warmed up, but the performance did not decrease. I played Call of Duty: Mobile, which runs fine on the highest settings. Asphalt 9: Legends runs at 60fps by default, similar to the console, but the phone warms up after a while. The sample touch level was also shown after adjusting it in the Playstation phone app.

Xiaomi has done a great job of delivering immersive sound with the new 12 Pro’s quad speaker setup. The speakers are tuned by Harman Kardon and you get a tweeter and a woofer at the end of the phone. The sound quality was impressive as the four speakers delivered balanced sound with a focus on bass and mid-range. The phone offers several Dolby Atmos sound settings and an equalizer to customize the sound to your liking.
While the speakers are good, I find the placement of the speaker grill on the phone a bit odd. Every time I hold the phone up, I cover the phone, so it’s in the lower left corner of the frame when playing games. The bottom grid at the corner faces diagonally, so no matter how you hold the phone horizontally, you’ll definitely block one of them. I experienced the best sound output when holding the phone up or sitting it in a phone stand.
The Xiaomi 12 Pro’s battery life was pretty good, though it wasn’t great at just 12 hours and 18 minutes on our HD video loop test. The phone easily lasted a day and a half with my regular usage, including an hour of playtime and camera use and video streaming. The 120W charger was able to fully charge the 12 Pro in 27 minutes when using boost mode. The phone will heat up when charging in this mode, and it will display a notification on the screen to let you know that this is happening and that it is normal.
Xiaomi 12 Pro has three rear cameras, all with 50-megapixel resolution, which according to Xiaomi should provide continuous image quality. The main camera has OIS, the ultra-wide-angle camera has a 115-degree field of view, and the telephoto camera brings 2X optical zoom (48mm). Selfies are captured by the 32-megapixel front-facing camera. The 12 Pro’s main camera is the first to use Sony’s new 1/1.28-inch IMX707 sensor with 1.22μm pixels. This should, in theory, help provide more detail in all kinds of lighting conditions. It’s much larger than the Sony IMX766 (1/1.56-inch) sensor we’ve seen in many 2022 Android flagships.
