Recently, Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 11, a smartphone that will be released in early 2022 and is sold at a very affordable price. Just a month later, Xiaomi also announced its “Pro” sibling, nicknamed the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G.

But I believe the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G shares more similarities with the Xiaomi 11T. Announced last September 2021, it is actually a more expensive and high-end mid-range smartphone.
As phone makers slowly move away from curved screens and bodies, so does Xiaomi. The company followed the latest simple design trend. They made the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G a smartphone that looks and feels like part of their premium smartphone lineup.

Apart from the usual Redmi logo, there is also a 5G indicator next to it. This is probably the fastest way to distinguish it from the regular Redmi Note 11.
The new straight edge frame is ideal. Some may find curved phones more secure to hold, but for me its solid weight is enough to hold it right in my hand. This happens even though the frame is made of plastic, not aluminum. Just be careful because even when we take good care of them, there are still drops 👀.
As expected, the camera array is similar to previous Xiaomi and Redmi devices to keep the brand. This arrangement separates the two brands from their former sub-brand POCO, which still runs MIUI.
To make up for some fragmentation, the 108MP camera protrudes further and the smaller ultra-wide and macro sensors (plus LED flash) are all circled in smaller circles. The other has “AI” branding, to keep the number even at the bottom.

Xiaomi first started doing this on the Mi 10T Pro, if I’m wrong. The difference in layout is uncanny.
If you flip the phone over, you’ll be greeted with a centered punch-hole display like the one on the Redmi Note 10 and 10S.
Fortunately, they decided to use a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that looks very similar to the one used on the Xiaomi 11T – a nice touch with responsiveness.
The similarities between Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G and Xiaomi 11T do not end there. Although I’ve used the pro counterpart, it’s still safe to say they’re similar in terms of hardware. Both the 11T and 11 Pro 5G have a 6.67-inch 120Hz display with a centered punch-hole cutout.

Going into details, the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G has a bright Super AMOLED display with a maximum brightness of 1200 nits compared to the Xiaomi 11T’s AMOLED display, which is 200 nits short.
Still, the latter can support HDR10+ content, while the former can display HDR10. Also, while the 11T has Gorilla Glass Victus, this phone only has Gorilla Glass 5. These are still great things considering the price.
In my daily use, a real feast for the eyes. Unlike other AMOLED screens, the colors are bursting and the calibration is not overclocked.
I’m fully aware of AMOLED’s burn-in issues, but I still prefer this over smartphones that use IPS-LCD. I mean, just look at the deep black that blends perfectly with the camera cutouts and slim black bezels.

It also has stereo speakers with a vivid and bright screen. Whether I’m playing a K-drama full of dramatic dialogue or a mix of loud, soft or K-Pop songs, the speaker set is clear and loud enough.
Whether on my concert tour in my quiet room or bathroom, its loudness and clarity fills the vacuum at just 60 percent volume.
The only disappointment for me is that playback of video content is limited to 1080p Full HD only. It’s understandable since it has a full HD+ screen resolution, but playing 4K content offers better image quality, especially with those sharp details. I can only see the chipset as the culprit behind this limitation – especially when this phone only records 1080p Full HD videos.
Now we talk about the chipset, Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G is powered by Snapdragon 695. It is the latest mid-range chipset with 5G support.

Feature-rich fans should listen to me. Just because it’s a Snapdragon chip doesn’t always mean it’s better than its MediaTek counterpart. We’re not really big on benchmarks, but in case you’re wondering, its closest competitor, the MediaTek Dimensity 920 5G chip, beats the Snapdragon 695 overall in this comparison chart. Of course, the Redmi Note 11 Pro (or the Chinese version of this phone) has the aforementioned MediaTek chipset.
Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G is not designed for heavy mobile gaming like Black Shark. But graphics-intensive games are mostly playable enough. Stick to low or medium graphics settings to play smoothly.

Like all games we play with different hardware requirements, not all chipsets are created equal. This is proof that having a “Snapdragon” processor doesn’t automatically mean it’s a “better performing smartphone” compared to other MediaTek phones with the same capability.
If you are interested in 5G speed, it still depends on the carrier and region. Thanks to my testing, it delivered fast download and upload speeds while working in a cafe on the subway that regular 4G LTE couldn’t.

Xiaomi calls its fast charging technologies “Mi Turbo Charge”. It went from 0% to 50% in about 15 minutes using the included charger. It took me no more than 45 minutes to finish a full charge. It’s safe to say it sticks to its promised charging speed of 42 minutes. That’s not far off the 11T’s guaranteed 36-minute charging speed.
When you first turn on the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G, you’ll be greeted with Xiaomi’s exclusive MIUI Android skin.
If it comes from an old Xiaomi, Redmi. or a POCO phone (or Pocophone. Your call), the changes to the UI experience won’t be that drastic. Apart from the lack of a customized control center and app drawer, gestures are also a way to make it easier for you to navigate.
Although it has the latest MIUI 13 version, it is still based on Android 11 instead of Android 12. It’s not exactly a deal breaker, but it still counts against the limited software updates that Android phones get over a three-year period.

I already mentioned how similar the Xiaomi 11T is to the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G. However, there are things that this phone includes that its more expensive Xiaomi counterpart doesn’t.
Apart from the top speaker, there is also an IR (infrared) blaster and a 3.5mm audio jack at the top. Those who are still used to using wired earphones/headphones and have turned their phone into a universal remote will benefit most from these forgotten necessities.
Although the bottom looks like any other Android smartphone, the interesting part is actually its filling.
While the Xiaomi 11T supports dual micro SIMs, the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G has a hybrid SIM slot and the second SIM slot doubles as a microSD card slot. A must have for those who store a lot of files. It’s a better way to protect your photos, videos, and other files than having an online backup that’s subscription-based and mostly depends on a fast Internet connection.
