Update Xiaomi Logo Review – Xiaomi, the popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has announced that it will release an intermediate software update, MIUI 14.1, for its flagship Xiaomi and Redmi series. Although the company has been focusing on the development of MIUI 15, it decided to release this update to avoid being behind its competitors in updating its devices to Android 14.

Therefore, the main feature of MIUI 14.1 will be a new version of the system, based on Android 14. This is good news for Xiaomi and Redmi users. They have been waiting for the latest version of Android on their devices. The update will only be available for Xiaomi 13, 13 Pro, 13 Ultra, Redmi K60, and K60 Pro. And it is expected to be implemented gradually between August and November 2023.

Storage or technical access is necessary to create a user profile to send advertising, or to track a user on a website or on multiple websites for similar marketing purposes. Xiaomi 13 runs the company’s latest MIUI 14 on Android 13. This new OS combination promises, among other things, significant improvements in performance and optimization. All this is wrapped in what Xiaomi calls “Project Razor”. The team behind MIUI 14 updated the system architecture at the Android Kernel level with planning of CPU, GPU and memory resources, lighter firmware size and reduced memory usage. Apparently, the result is 60% smoother performance of MIUI 14 on Xiaomi 12S Ultra compared to MIUI 13.

Let’s take a quick look at what’s new in MIUI 14 running on our Xiaomi unit 13. Only eight system apps cannot be installed, which is a big step up from previous versions of MIUI. Other neat improvements include automatic compression for underutilized apps and a toggle to turn off persistent notifications. These appear to be based on the Android 13 core rather than the MIUI skin. Privacy is also enhanced by end-to-end encryption and on-device processing of user data.

Going through the list of new additions expected for MIUI 14 from its official release, we noticed that many are still missing from the Xiaomi unit 13. Maybe some new features will be introduced later with updates. Our section does not have new animated character widgets, but it does have a new style of extended folders.

We also didn’t get the same file connection, Xiaomi’s wireless switch controls, or the new family account features. However, there are improved text recognition and extraction from images in galleries.

At Work, Play And Accessories

Apart from these few changes, MIUI has not changed in any major way, and users will feel right at home.

The split between the notification shade and the Control Center is enabled by default this time, and maybe that’s a good thing. We found it to be quite useful, and it’s a way to educate users about MIUI’s unique approach to UI. And if you’re not a fan, you can always go back to the regular notification shade with a quick toggle in one place.

The home screen, recent apps and general settings menu are the usual. The app drawer is also activated automatically, and we like that Xiaomi has placed a search bar at the bottom of the screen for easy access. There are special and preset categories for quick navigation.

Unlike the usual recent apps menu, MIUI’s task switcher lists apps vertically and provides several useful shortcuts. That’s where you can open apps in floating windows. However, you can open only one floating program at a time. If you want a faster shortcut for applications that use open form windows, enable Sidebar.

In particular, the sidebar is different depending on the situation. In games, the Sidebar provides various game-related features, while in video applications, the Sidebar becomes the Video toolbar. It allows you to launch video applications in pop-up windows, Screenshot, Record screen, Cast and Play Video with the screen off, including on YouTube without a Premium subscription. The only caveat is that the apps where you want the feature to be enabled need to be listed beforehand.

Personalization is, as always, a big part of MIUI. The system allows you to choose an always-on display style or a UI theme. In addition to those pre-installed on the device, the theme store offers you a wide selection. The theme itself changes not only the overall look but also the ringtones and system icons.

Moving on to privacy and security, MIUI comes with a pre-installed System Security app. In addition to the extra layer of anti-malware protection it offers, the app keeps most of the app’s settings and privacy features in one place. It can manage your whitelist, manage or control your data usage, configure battery behavior, and increase the amount of RAM. It can also manage the permissions of your installed apps, define the battery behavior of selected apps, and set restrictions for only certain apps.

Speaking of security, the fingerprint reader is fast and reliable. We had no problems even if we are outside on a sunny day. There is extended functionality for the fingerprint reader, which allows you to open apps or take action as soon as you unlock the device – just place your finger on the scanner when it is unlocked. It’s like OnePlus’s OxygenOS/Oppo’s ColorOS/Realme’s Realme UI, but it doesn’t allow customization. We haven’t found a way to add shortcut apps, so you’re stuck with Search Finder and QR Code.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 Android Q Update Could Happen Very Soon

There’s also a test feature that lets you use the fingerprint reader to measure heart rate. It’s small, but still a small interesting addition.

All in all, MIUI 14 has changed little in iteration 13. At least on our Xiaomi 13 unit, that is. It’s as simple and customizable as ever. Xiaomi paid special attention to the haptics on this unit, and we found the motor to be crisp, sharp and precise. There is even an adjustment of the size of the haptic feedback if you find it too interesting or not strong enough.

The Xiaomi 13 packs the latest and greatest chipset that Qualcomm has to offer – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It has an octa-core CPU configuration with a single Cortex-X3 core, running up to 3.2 GHz, 2×2 .8 GHz Cortex- A715, 2×2.8 GHz Cortex-A710 and 3×2.0 GHz Cortex-A510 cores.
