The new version is mostly under-the-hood changes and optimizations. Still, there’s a lot to cover in this feature-rich MIUI environment, so read on to see if it’s up your alley before picking up a Xiaomi smartphone.

Xiaomi’s MIUI will barely be affected by the new Android version, which is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, Xiaomi can roll out the latest Android skins and features for most of its smartphones — including low-end ones. By doing so, the company has earned a good reputation for keeping its smartphones updated with the latest features.
But on the other hand, some Android-internal features don’t make it to MIUI. For example, we haven’t seen notification history since Android 12, and even the MIUI 14 + Android 13 combination doesn’t suggest you enable or disable notifications of newly installed apps. And a few missing features that come to mind. There are many other functionalities that Xiaomi has chosen to include in its updates.
We found no significant difference between Xiaomi smartphones running MIUI 14 + Android 12 and MIUI 14 + Android 13, indicating that the Android version under MIUI is not that important. The disparity in features is largely due to hardware limitations and the level of smartphones in Xiaomi’s portfolio.

When Xiaomi announced the MIUI 14 and Xiaomi 13 series, the company outlined some new features (apart from the above system optimization), but little did we know that many of them would not make it to the international version of the ROM.
These features are some of the user-facing features included in the foreign edition of MIUI. Then, there are differences in implementation. We have seen MIUI 14 phones offering large and XXL folder variants while others have only large folders.
Fortunately, we have a lot of time to spend with the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, but it uses the Global ported version of the official Chinese MIUI 14 + Android 13 ROM. We found many changes as well as features that we hadn’t seen before. One of them in particular – application management.

In the Application Management submenu, we find the Application Behavior Log. It monitors the actions of each application in the background and keeps the logs in chronological order. It can also tell you if an app is launching another app or when an app is trying to launch in the background. Thanks to these logs we were able to fix some app related issues and we are disappointed that this feature did not make it to the global version of MIUI.

The global version of the MIUI 14 launcher also comes with a new toggle in Control Center that lets you manage Xiaomi devices and wearables.
UI navigation is business as usual. You have the option of software buttons instead of gesture-based navigation, but who uses that anyway? Still, we found three unique things about MIUI navigation gestures. First, you can hide the navigation pane at the bottom, but you can still swipe left and right at the bottom corner to quickly switch between apps. It’s usually not possible if you hide the slices on other Android emulators or vanilla Android.

Second, the back gesture only works if you swipe from the bottom half of the edge. This is because Xiaomi doesn’t want to worry about some pull-down menus in some apps. If you swipe the top half of the left/right side, you will pull out the desired menu instead of going back.
Third, there is granular control for palm rejection. There are two standard presets and one that allows you to adjust the area that won’t react to touch on the edge of the screen. It is usually used in phones with curved sides.
In terms of UI, not much has changed from MIUI 13. The system uses its own icon for the main settings menu and the overall look is familiar.
All system menus have a consistent, flat, streamlined and simple design, with most interactive content moved to the bottom half of the screen for ease of use. Samsung One UI is a far cry from the one-handed design or even Oppo/OnePlus/Realme’s ColorOS/OxygenOS/Realme UI, where you have everything within reach of your thumb.

The app drawer is a great exception. It has a search bar below the display and the results are neatly arranged above the search bar.
When it comes to the app drawer, you can opt for a simple home screen layout, but you’ll lose out on categories, easy app search, and customizable scrolling. This is one of the best and most organized app drawer we use on Android.
The latest apps menu is another aspect of MIUI that differs from phones from other manufacturers. Bit displays your open apps in a vertically scrollable list of tiles. You also get the option to change the layout to the more popular horizontal, carousel-style layout.
The Recent Apps menu is also home to useful shortcuts like Deep Clean or Floating Windows. The latter lets you open multiple apps in floating windows for easy multitasking. We will talk about it in detail a little later.

The notification shade also has two versions. MIUI 14 starts with the so-called Control Center by default, which mimics Apple’s iOS Control Center. A swipe down from the right half of the screen opens the Control Center with just two quick toggles and sliders for screen brightness and volume. The Wi-Fi and Cellular Data toggle is fixed and cannot be changed/changed. The rest, you can reset your preferences.
Swiping down on the left half of the display opens the notification shade and the familiar card-style notification.
You can switch between notification shade and control center using left/right swipe. That means you can’t dismiss the notification card by swiping left, which is the main problem with this implementation. Otherwise, we see the potential and why some users are opting for the new Control Center. It gives you more control toggle. We can’t figure out why only the cellular data toggle turns green when it’s on and the others are blue when it’s on.
In terms of customization, there is a lot to go through. The Xiaomi Theme Ecosystem has been active for years, and many members of the creative community with hundreds of themes.

The System Themes app lets you change not only your wallpaper, but also your fonts, icons, ringtones, and AoD styles.
For more premium Xiaomis, you can choose the so-called Super wallpaper. It is a beautiful animation of Earth, Saturn, Mars, geometric shapes and the snow peak of Mount Siguniang. It applies to your lock screen, home screen and AoD.
Speaking of display all the time, MIUI has the largest selection of AoD themes and presets. You can create one from scratch with an image of your choice. But in terms of functionality, it offers standard options such as a schedule or when to turn off automatically.
Like many other things, Xiaomi lets you customize your notifications and how they appear. You can choose which apps appear on the lock screen (you want to hide apps that send sensitive information on the lock screen), disable persistent, floating notifications and notification badges on an app-by-app basis. You can be quite flexible with how the app notifies you.
