Update Xiaomi 9 Note Review

Update Xiaomi 9 Note Review – Xiaomi made a big splash in the Indian market earlier this year with the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. Both smartphones have impressive specifications at competitive prices, but the excitement is short-lived, as both have become more expensive due to dollar fluctuations and GST hike. Today, Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 9 available at sub Rs. worth 15,000. It’s a powerful indoor workout compared to before, but is it good value for money? I took a look at the new Redmi Note 9 to find out.

Redmi introduced the Aura Balance design with the Redmi Note 9 Pro series, and the Redmi Note 9 gets it as standard. It looks like a cousin, but unlike the Redmi Note 9 it doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner on the side. However, there is a more traditional rear-mounted one, positioned below the rear camera module.

Xiaomi matched the color of the fingerprint scanner to the glossiness of the camera module, making it difficult to see from a distance. I prefer a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and the one on the Redmi Note 9 is well positioned. Xiaomi launched the smartphone in three colors: Pebble Grey, Arctic White, and Aqua Green. I had the Arctic White unit for this review, and it has a nice gradient on the back.

The second big change in the Redmi Note 9 is the punch hole display. The front camera is in the upper left corner instead of in the middle, like the Redmi Note 9 Pro (Review) and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (Review). Holes don’t bother. If you hold your phone in landscape, you probably won’t notice. What you will notice is the bezel, which is a bit thick, but I’d say it’s acceptable at this price point.

Xiaomi released a large display for the Redmi Note 9, so this phone requires a bit of a hand shuffle to reach the top with one hand. The power and volume buttons are well placed and easy to press. Like most other Redmi phones, the Note 9 has an IR emitter on top. It can be used to control the television or the air conditioner, and it can be useful.

The phone is 8.9mm thick and weighs 199g. It is quite heavy compared to some of the other smartphones in the price range. Xiaomi says it used a P2i nano coating on the device with a rubber seal on the port for minimal protection from liquid exposure. The main reason for the weight may be due to the large battery that this phone houses. Xiaomi has also included a 22.5W charger in the box (although charging is currently limited to 18W – more on that later).

The Redmi Note 9 is now the entry point for the Note 9 series, and Xiaomi has chosen the MediaTek Helio G85 for this model. It is an octa-core processor with two Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2GHz, and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. For graphics, there is an ARM Mali-G52 GPU clocked at 1GHz.

Redmi Note 9 has a 6.53-inch screen with full HD + resolution (1080×2340 pixels) and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection. There are three variants of the Redmi Note 9: 4GB RAM with 64GB storage, 4GB RAM with 128GB storage, and 6GB RAM with 128GB storage. This variant is priced at Rs. 11,999, Rs.13,499, and Rs. 14,999 respectively at launch, and I have the top variant for this review.

The Redmi Note 9 offers expandable storage with a dedicated microSD card slot. It has two Nano-SIM slots and supports dual 4G as well as VoLTE. There is Bluetooth 5, Wi-Fi 802.11 n, and four satellite navigation systems. The battery capacity is 5,020mAh. The Redmi Note 9 is capable of reverse charging of 9W through the USB Type-C port.

In terms of software, there is nothing new. The Redmi Note 9 runs MIUI 11 on top of Android 10 and my unit has the new June security patch. The phone comes with a lot of bloatware pre-installed, and it advises you to download more during the setup process. It also shows ads on the lock screen, an option that is enabled by default, but I turned it off when I set up my phone. Some of the pre-installed apps on the phone are Mi Store, Osom Rummy, Helo, Mi Community, Zili, and Mi Pay. Helo and Mi Community are banned by the Government of India but were installed on my review unit; This app doesn’t work, though.

The UI is very similar to what I’m used to on other Xiaomi smartphones. You get traditional three-button navigation by default but you can swap it out for swipe gestures. There are other useful features such as Game Turbo, which cleans up RAM, gives higher bandwidth priority to games running in the foreground, and limits motion navigation during gameplay. It also offers the option to accept incoming calls in hands-free mode, and you can customize the touch response for each game.

I see spammy notifications from pre-installed apps like Mi Video and Get Apps, and it detracts from the overall user experience.

The performance of the Redmi Note 9 is nothing to complain about. The MediaTek Helio G85 is a great processor and easily handles daily tasks. App loading times are acceptable, and with 6GB of RAM, I can easily switch between different apps.

I found the display on the Redmi Note 9 to be decent. It has good viewing angles and is bright enough when needed. You also get the option to tweak the color output. However, it’s not like the AMOLED display on the Samsung Galaxy M21 (Review). I found the fingerprint scanner mounted on the back to quickly unlock the smartphone. Face recognition is also fast and convenient.

I ran some benchmarks on the Redmi Note 9 to see how the MediaTek Helio G85 fares compared to other processors. On Antutu, the Redmi Note 9 scored 200,489 which is close to the Realme Narzo 10 (Review), which has the same price. In Geekbench 5’s single-core and multi-core tests, it scored 356 and 1,325 points, respectively. It also managed 38fps, 14fps, and 8fps in GFXBench’s T-Rex graphics benchmarks, Manhattan 3.1, and Car Chase.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Review: Another Stunning Crowd Pleaser From Xiaomi

The Redmi Note 9 can run games like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends without any problem. In PUBG Mobile, the phone defaults to Medium settings but I was able to raise it to High without any performance degradation. However, the phone becomes warm to the touch after playing games for 20 minutes. I also noticed about a 10 percent battery drop during this time. Asphalt 9 ran on default settings, and I only noticed stuttering on some tracks.

I found the battery life of the Redmi Note 9 to be pretty good. It easily went over a day and a half before needing to be plugged in. Even if you’re a heavy user, the 5,020mAh battery should last you a day. It lasted 15 hours, 45 minutes on the HD video loop test.

The wattage of the charger advertised with the Redmi Note 9 caused a bit of controversy in the days after its launch. The Redmi Note 9 comes with a 22.5W charger in the box, but the device is currently limited to 18W for charging. Xiaomi told Gadgets 360 that the Redmi Note 9 now has a “software lock” on the power it will carry, and it will require lab and field testing that is not yet possible due to the lock. Xiaomi says it will release a software update in the future that will allow the Redmi Note 9 to charge at 22.5W.

Currently, the phone charges up to 29 percent in 30 minutes and 60 percent in an hour. Fully charging the device takes more than two hours. This should drop if or when Xiaomi unlocks full speed charging.

Redmi Note 9 Pro Review: Go For The Max

The Redmi Note 9 has a quad-camera setup consisting of a 48-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies, it has a 13-megapixel camera on the front. The camera app is very similar to what I’ve seen on other Redmi phones.

Besides the standard shooting mode, the app has a Pro mode for both photos and videos, which allows you to manually control various parameters. It also has a Document mode that lets you crop photos and convert them to Black and White right from the viewfinder. With apps like Camscanner banned, this will be useful.
