I love the streamlined look of a classic tripod lamp, but lamps can get expensive quickly. Vintage models often have an industrial wooden tripod that supports optical equipment such as an inspector traverse.
Their narrow, height-adjustable legs end in a small platform and usually have brass fittings that give them a certain mechanical elegance. This lamp has a simple design that is simple and inexpensive, but looks great as it illuminates your space.
I kept the tapered legs and added a large drum shade to modernize the look. To make a center post to attach the legs to, I bought a table leg, cut it with the sloping sides up, and added a threaded rod in the middle for the lamp wire to go through. A typical lighting kit from Home Center will provide all the parts you need to turn the stand into a work light. Deciding where to place your new custom floor lamp is the hardest part.

At around $15, a lamp kit is an economical way to purchase the parts needed to assemble a lamp. The kit usually includes a wire plug, a socket, several threaded fasteners, and a harp with a base and flap to hold the shade.
For this project, the only additional piece you’ll need is a hollow threaded wire to insert into the center post of the tripod lamp. After threading the lamp cord through the threaded rod, you can follow the instructions that come with the kit to plug it in.
Remove any hardware installed on the turntable leg. Following the cut list in , cut the 8-inch center post to the 8-inch center post as shown and cut the tripod legs to length as shown.
With each tripod leg flat, mark a diagonal line starting 1 inch from the bottom corner and 8 inches up the outer edge. Clamp the leg to the work surface so that the line extends from its edge and cut the taper with a circular saw.

Cut the top corners of each leg at 45° with a miter saw to remove ¾ inch from each edge. Then, using a drill/driver fitted with a drill bit that matches the diameter of the wing screws that hold the legs, drill a hole in each leg about its width and centered 1 inch from its top edge. Sand the edges of the cut corners, the legs and the center post of the lamp.
With a drill the size of the threaded plugs, drill three holes as evenly as possible around the sides of the center post, in the center of its height. Using a hex wrench, screw a threaded insert into each hole until flush.
Clamp the post to the work surface. Drill a hole in the center of the post using a threaded rod gauge. Drive the threaded wire into the hole with a rubber mallet, leaving about ¾ inch at the top of the post.
Coat the legs and center post with precoat wood conditioner. Then use a brush or cloth to apply the stain, covering all surfaces. Wipe off excess and allow to dry. Apply a protective coat of polyurethane. If desired, spray-coat screws — Jen chose gold — for a finished look.

Place the first leg so that the narrow side of the leg is to your right. Drive a wing screw through the hole in the leg and into a threaded insert in the center post. Tighten the screw until the foot presses against the post. Repeat the process with the remaining legs.
Pass the lamp wire up through the threaded wire. Follow the kit’s instructions to connect the wires to the socket, then screw the socket onto the threaded wire. Tie the cord to the inside of one leg, being careful not to puncture the wire.
Stand the assembly upright, add a piece of wood glue between each leg and the center post, then adjust the legs evenly spaced until the center post is in place. Fully tighten the wing screws. Add the lampshade, place the shade, and attach the vial.
