An activist investor calling for changes at Rolls-Royce has increased its stake in WH Smith but has confirmed it will support the running of the struggling chain of high street stores.
Causeway Capital Management is the retailer’s biggest shareholder and owns 9% of the shares after a recent profit warning. Analysts said the California-based investor was banking on a renaissance in international travel rather than agitating for change.
WH Smith, whose products include sandwiches for books, newspapers and stationery, has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic as its once-thriving stores in airports and train stations have collapsed due to travel restrictions and remote working. It had also acquired American travel retail chain Marshall Retail several months before the first closure.
WH Smith shares lost nearly two-thirds of their value at the start of the pandemic and the company’s response to the crisis included cutting 1,500 jobs. It has a global workforce of 14,000 and shares have rebounded to £15.07, down 37% from pre-Covid levels.

You’re not out of the woods yet. In early September, WH Smith chief executive Carl Cowling told the city that “the trajectory of the recovery in the travel industry remains uncertain” and that earnings for the year through August 2022 would fall short of market expectations.
Last month, Causeway portfolio manager Jonathan Eng called for a change in the board of directors at Rolls-Royce, where he is the largest shareholder. At the time, Eng said the company needed “fresh thinking.” However, a source close to WH Smith said it was on friendly terms with the investor, who first bought it during last year’s emergency call.
Eng issued a statement in response to a Sunday Times report that suggested increasing Causeway’s stake in WH Smith could also lead to demands for changes there.
He said: “We believe strongly in WH Smith’s strategy and management team, which is why we made our first investment last March and continue to grow our stake. This is a book that has been on my TBR list for so long and I was so happy to see it was part of the book club because it gave me an excuse to read it sooner.
All I had ever heard of this book was what I read on the back of the description. I didn’t have much to say, but I knew I wanted to read it. I had an idea of what kind of book it might be…but I was completely wrong. It was so different than what I imagined. Flora was so different from how I saw her when I read the end of the book and the story couldn’t have been further from my predictions.
Saying it’s so different isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because I enjoyed reading this book even though it wasn’t what I expected. Flora’s character is so interesting and her narration is imperfectly perfect because she has a form of amnesia and the writing gets repetitive at times but it adds to the plot and her journey which I loved.
I don’t want to say too much about it because I would recommend going into this book the way I did without really knowing much about it. That way, you can experience the book completely with no preconceived notions of how it’s going to end.

I really enjoyed this book even though the story was different from what I expected to read. However, the story told still hooked me. I loved the twists and turns in this book and how it made me wonder who Flora was and if I could trust her narrative as a reader. This was a unique read that I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys YA books with a difference.
Now, this is not a book I would buy in a bookstore. The cover doesn’t usually draw me to the shelves, and when I read the description on the back, I said that while it looked very interesting, it wasn’t my usual choice.
Of course, as part of a book club, I read it and was pleasantly surprised at how much I bought into the story. It took about a hundred pages before I was fully invested in this story and felt like “I can’t put this down” and “One more chapter”.
I loved the layout of the book and the way the story was told. It actually has two stories: before the fire and after the fire. After the Fire is a very controlled set of chapters, not a lot of movement, but a lot of conversation as you go. There’s so much more before the fire
