Update Whsmith A5 Diary Review – Keeping a diary has been my habit since I was 18 years old. For the past few years, the preferred format has been an A5 book with pages per day. The daily ritual is to write it down, using a pen, usually immediately after breakfast, recounting the events of the previous day. It’s a short ten-minute meeting for me, it’s really valuable.
However, finding a suitable diary is not easy. Last year I used one from Rymans, but was disappointed to find that the line spacing has been reduced to 6.5mm in 2018 from 7.91mm in 2017. , Check line spacing before buying. For 2019, Raman’s Diary is still on sale on Clingfilm, everywhere I looked. In WHSmith, there are A5 pages per day, but the line spacing seems too narrow to me.

Then on Paperchase, I found some diaries from 2019 still on the shelves, in A5 page format for each day. The cover with a blue and yellow flower pattern and a rainbow of blue, yellow and light green isn’t cool, but it can’t be denied. It cost £14.00 but was reduced to £9.75 in the sale. I was held for years.

Luckily, the default row spacing is 8.4 mm per row (10 rows = 84 mm) which is fine for me. This gives 21 rows per page. The book feels great in the hand with the cloth cover. I’m not sure it’s actually knitted, but it feels pleasantly textured and grippy. Flexible yet protective cover. It is well bound, with stitched binding, dark blue edged paper, and a blue ribbon page marker.
It turns out that there are not enough days for the glass. On Saturday and Sunday you get only half a glass. Therefore, for two out of every seven days, the ‘one page day’ description is incorrect and misleading. It’s like Paperchase is saying ‘it doesn’t matter what you do in your spare time.’ However, I forgive them on occasion because the book is well made and sold cheaply.
The real pleasure is the paper: 100gsm white paper you love with pens. It’s smooth, but if you look at it with a loupe, there are some textures that give you nibs that are also polished and give great advice. I’ve used a Parker Reflex (pictured), medium nib, and a diary with Conway Stewart Tawny dark blue ink. This cheap pen is a light and comfortable writer. The experience of writing with this combination of pen, ink and paper is very enjoyable, as it is a great way to start the day.
