Update Whsmith A5 Diary 2021 Review – Keeping a journal has been a habit of mine since I was 18. For the past few years, my best format has been an A5 book, with one page a day. The daily routine is to write, with a fountain pen, usually after breakfast, describing the events of the previous day. This ten minute time for me is very important.
However, it is not always easy to find a suitable magazine. I used one from Rymans last year, but was disappointed to learn that the line was reduced to 6.5mm in 2018, from 7.91mm in 2017. Also, with new books sometimes sealed with cling film, you don’t get a chance to see it. what is the line spacing before you buy. For 2019, with Rymans information still sold in clear film, I saw something. In WHSmith, there were A5 pages on the day of publication, but the line size seemed too narrow for my taste.

Then, with Paperchase, I found a few 2019 books left on the shelf, on A5 pages today. The cover with its design of blue and yellow flowers and a rainbow of blue, yellow and light green is not my style, but it is undeniably fun. The price was £14.00 but it turned out to be reduced in a sale, down to £9.75. I planned a year.

Fortunately, the line size is an impressive 8.4mm per line (10 lines = 84mm) which is fine for me. This gives 21 lines per page. Good handwriting, with some sort of linen cover. I’m not sure if it’s real linen, but it feels nice and sticky. The covers are flexible yet protective. Well bound, with seams, dark blue endpapers and single blue label.
Doesn’t look like a great day per page. On Saturdays and Sundays only half a page is available. So for two out of every seven days the “Days on a Page” claim is false and misleading. It’s like Paperchase saying, “What you do in your free time is useless.” However, at this point I forgive them because the book was so well done that it had very low sales.
The real joy of paper: 100gsm white paper that my pencil loves. It’s soft, but when examined under a magnifying glass, there’s something about it that gives it a nice edge and gives it a nice presentation. I used journaling with Parker Reflex (pictured), medium nib, and Conway Stewart Tavy dark blue ink. This affordable pen is a lightweight and effortless writer. The writing experience of this pen, ink and paper combination is so much fun, it’s a great way to start the day. Our local WH Smith store in Brent Cross Shopping Center has had another makeover recently and it looks much better. cozy and spacious when you enter. As I browsed, and after circling the racks of rollerballs and fine-line markers (mostly Lamy, Parker, and Sheaffer), I headed for the newspaper racks.
My eyes were drawn to their Moderno B5 notebook, with 96 ivory rulers (192 pages) of 80gsm paper. It has the ubiquitous back pocket with a fitted flap.

I didn’t need a notebook right away (it’s a comment, tbh) but this one tempted me, mostly because I think it’s a nice big B5 that works as a good compromise between A4 and A5. I didn’t know if the document would be accepted or not (part of the reason I wrote this short review – disease prevention, yes it is) but I went to personal service to part with £11.99. The appeal of a new magazine is strong.
The notebook has a beautiful gray leather frame. I still don’t know if this plastic will crack and turn white in the long term. The book is sewn. Paul Simon’s words come to mind: every page is neatly bound, “for a poet and a man,” or something like that.
One of the first things to do when looking for a new notebook is to find the paper for the pencil ink. I usually pick a handful of pens from my “now inking” bottle and draw a line or two at a time, to see how the pen feels on the paper, if it’s feathery, and whether it bleeds into the paper or shows too much. . I’m happy to report that of all the inks I’ve tried, these tests have been successful. There was no bleeding on any of them and very little to show for it.
In terms of utility, a B5 journal is very nice to have. It can be used as bullet-talk or “bu-jo”. The only limitation is 29 lines per page, two days before the month (or a few holiday sandwiches) but you can add another line at the top and another line at the bottom of the page. , if this is your favorite app. I did this before in another book, where I created a three-year bu-jo with two pages for each month.

I’m not a paper and tape person, but I find a bu-jo very useful. For example, as opposed to one year, you can enter dates for a year in the future, or two or three years in advance, such as car insurance renewal dates, MOT expiry dates or due dates for ISAs or permanent accounts.
Then there are other pages, not included in the monthly views, that you can use for all sorts of things. For example, I like to make lists of albums by certain artists and then bookmark them after listening to them, which I find more satisfying than jumping into Spotify.
Most of all, I love being able to use the fountain pen and the book. 8mm line height is perfect for me. I don’t think I’ll ever use it for a bu-jo because I’ve already set it up for that, but I’ll be happy to keep it in stock until a suitable job comes along. I know one should NEED a notebook before buying one, not the other way around, but that’s the life of a book addict.
My notebooks fall into two broad categories: the ones I want to keep when they’re full, and the ones I don’t (usually filled with pen and ink samples and notes of no lasting interest). Having a book with a long cover seems like it should be used as a “guardian”. In the past I used a Ryman A4 newspaper as a bu-jo, but after many years of service, these covers fall off and leave things on my table. If you plan to use a notebook for many bu-jo years, it’s wise to think about how to wear the cover.

The B5 size gives you the opportunity to give yourself more space on the page than the A5 newspaper, (which I use a lot of Leuchtturms) but it doesn’t need as much space in a bag as A4 if and when you want to take it out. , to write a little in a coffee shop, as I planned to do, but haven’t done much yet.
