Details of the restructuring said pre-tax profits fell 18.6% to £231.3m in the six months to October 1, while underlying profits fell 88.4% to £25.1m.
CEO Steve Rowe also announced plans to close 53 stores in 10 international markets – including 10 in China and seven in France – while exiting Belgium, Estonia, Hungary and Lithuania, putting around 2,100 jobs at risk.

The group stressed that it will have more stores overall after the restructuring, with the aim of opening more than Simply Food stores by the end of the 2018/19 financial year.
Mr Rowe, who took over from Dutchman Marc Bolland in April, said: “Over the next five years we will replace our UK estate with 60 fewer clothing and home stores, while continuing to grow the Simply Food stores.
He added: “These are difficult but crucial decisions to build an M&S of the future that is simpler, more relevant, multi-channel and focused on sustainable revenue.”
