The U Mobile U25 prepaid card costs RM25/month but is now offered with a promo price of RM20/month. It offers “unlimited” data capped at 3Mbps with unlimited calling in Malaysia. However, note that the plan does not come with hotspot usage data. If you need to share your data, you can purchase 3GB hotspot data for RM3 which is valid for 3 days.

Meanwhile, the high-end U35 plan, which costs RM35/month, offers “unlimited” data at 6Mbps, unlimited calls in Malaysia and 3GB hotspot data. Both plans come with 30 hours of speed boost that you can enjoy for 1 hour per day. Speed Booster can be activated through the MyUMobile app and allows you to enjoy higher speeds depending on network availability.

If you compare with the previous Geller Unlimited GX38 which is offered at RM35/month, the old plan offers double the hotspot quota to 6GB per month. However, it loses the speed boost feature, so you’re always limited to 6 Mbps.
As with any cheap “unlimited” plan, there is the dreaded FUP. According to the FAQ, the new prepaid plans come with a fair usage policy (FUP) for unlimited data. On the cheapest U25, you will get a FUP quota of 30GB, while the U35 plan will get a higher FUP quota of 100GB. Once you reach your limit, your speed will be limited to 512 kbps until it is restored.
It is also noted that even if the clock speed booster is enabled, your speed is still limited to 512kbps when you use your FUP quota. To get full speed back, U Mobile offers additional speed boost of RM5 every 24 hours.
A new SIM pack costs RM10 and comes with a pre-installed RM6 credit that is valid for 5 days. 1GB of free high-speed data is also included. U Mobile is promoting its prepaid service as 5G ready, but they haven’t announced anything about 5G free trials or participation in the Digital National Berhad wholesale service.

SMARTY is powered by Three Networks. Their customers get the same 4G and 3G coverage and data speeds as the three members. Some major networks limit the data speeds their MVNOs can receive, but the three do not. You can be sure that the experience will be the same.
Three’s 4G population coverage is as good as any other mobile network, but geographic coverage is critical and this is where the operator lags behind its competitors. As always, we recommend using the SMARTY coverage check to make sure most of your areas are covered. Also note that the three and therefore SMARTY does not have 2G, which means that the SmartSIM is not compatible with 2G mobile phones.
According to OpenSignal’s October 2020 speed test results, the three average 4G download speeds are around 22Mbps and their upload speeds are around 8Mbps. OpenSignal has not tested SMARTY, but since it uses the triplet infrastructure, the results will be similar. We should also mention that the SMARTY 4G network is not suitable for competitive mobile gaming. Network latency is higher than its competitors and you may experience problems while playing games where the connection type is P2P (player to player).
