The Galaxy S21 Ultra is Samsung’s new superphone for 2021 — and it’s coming out strong as the best of its kind, with a price to match.

The 6.8-inch screen is much smaller than last year’s Note 20 Ultra and S20 Ultra, but it’s clear, rich in color and very bright. If you want big-screen entertainment in your pocket, its 120Hz refresh rate (twice that of the iPhone) makes scrolling through feeds super-smooth.
The S21 Ultra is a very large and relatively heavy phone that competes with phones like the Note 20 Ultra and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I can use it with just one hand, but most people need two hands to use it safely without using some sort of phone grip.

The S21 Ultra is powered by the newly released Samsung Exynos 2100 processor in Europe (as tested) or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 in the US. Both variants get 12GB or 16GB of RAM depending on the model.
The performance was excellent throughout. The S21 Ultra looks better than last year’s Note 20 Ultra; From unlocking the phone to launching apps, every action is a little faster.
Battery life is also strong. The phone easily lasts a full day of heavy use. With my typical usage, which includes over 5.5 hours of screen time split between chat apps, Chrome, Gmail, Evernote and Guardian, I get over 35 hours between charges – from 7am on day 1 to 6pm on day 2. Spotify, and more, recorded about 15 photos and spent about three hours on 5G and the rest on Wi-Fi.
We Bought A Fake S21 Ultra For $100 And Compared It To The Real Thing
That’s longer than the Note 20 Ultra’s 30-hour battery, but shorter than last year’s S20 Ultra, and well behind the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 48-hour battery. Changing the screen from the default dynamic refresh rate of 120Hz and FHD+ resolution to the higher QHD+ resolution reduces battery life by several hours.
Samsung does not provide an estimate for the number of full charge cycles the battery should last. Batteries in similar devices can last up to 500 cycles while retaining at least 80% of their original capacity.
These phones are usually repairable and come with a 24-month warranty. A screen repair on its predecessor, the S20 Ultra, costs £269. The battery can be replaced by an authorized service center at a cost not exceeding £59.
Samsung offers a trade-in and recycling scheme for old devices, but the smartphone doesn’t include any recyclable materials. Companies publish annual sustainability reports, but not impact assessments for individual products.

The S21 Ultra is one of the first smartphones to run Samsung’s latest One UI 3.1 version of Android 11.
It inherits most of the new features from Android 11: separate conversations, media and other alerts in the notification shade; speech bubbles; and additional privacy controls on location and other permissions.

The new partnership between Samsung and Google brings the search firm’s Discover feed and Messages text app to the S21 series. Various Microsoft applications and systems exist to link data and applications to Windows 10 and they also work well.
There’s some app overlap, including two separate SMS apps called “Messages” — one made by Samsung, the other by Google — but overall UI 3.1 remains one of the most refined and well-customized versions of Android.
Samsung has promised to support at least three major Android version updates and monthly security patches for four years, which is good for Android devices, but can’t compare to five years of support for Apple phones.

The S21 Ultra is the first Samsung smartphone to feature a new quad camera setup with not one, but two 10MP telephoto cameras – 12MP ultrawide, 108MP standard wide – one with 3x and one with 10x optical zoom.
It’s one of the most versatile camera systems available, besting all but Huawei’s P40 Pro Plus from last year. The main camera takes excellent photos, with better low-light performance and better processing than last year’s S20 Ultra. The ultrawide camera is great in bright light, but can start to look a bit dark and too sharp compared to the main camera in low light.
The 3x and 10x cameras produce clear and crisp images even in relatively dim light in stormy weather. The 3x camera is perfect for zooming in on people and other objects several meters away, while the 10x magnification lets you get meaningfully closer to subjects further away.
The camera system can zoom seamlessly from 1x to 10x magnification with hybrid and optical zoom.

In addition to 10x magnification, Samsung’s “Space Zoom” system uses digital zoom on the telephoto camera at 10x. Pictures taken up to 30x are really good. Images are clearly artificially enlarged with a maximum zoom of 100x, but it’s still a significant improvement from the 100x zoom on previous Samsung flagship smartphones. The new “Zoom Lock” system helps stabilize your shaking hand at 30x or more. Tap the small preview window and the phone will lock onto that image patch, turning the often blurry mess into a very sharp image.

Samsung’s night and portrait modes have also been improved. The new macro mode, which Samsung calls “Focus Enhancement,” produces sharper and better images with the ultrawide camera. The single shot feature, which takes videos and photos and creates animations all at once, is great fun, now faster and better. The 40-megapixel selfie camera is also one of the best around.
The camera shoots great videos up to 8K with a variety of useful tools such as “Director’s View”, which shows three rear-view cameras and selfies simultaneously. Samsung continues to lead Android rivals in video.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra costs £1,149 for 128GB of storage, £1,199 for 256GB or £1,329 for 512GB and 16GB of RAM, shipping on January 28.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is Samsung’s latest big, heavy and expensive superphone that makes meaningful improvements to the camera and general usability.
Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra 5g Colour Options
All the usual high quality components are there. The screen is amazing, the performance is great, the battery life is great, and the latest software is available. But it’s the improved fingerprint scanner that makes the biggest difference in day-to-day use – it’s fast, accurate and responsive, unlike Samsung’s previous efforts.
The new dual-telephoto camera system is also a significant improvement, providing flexibility and optical zoom that you won’t get with other mainstream competitors.
Samsung provides at least three years of major software updates, which is in line with most Android rivals, but lags behind Apple’s five-year iOS update.
If you want the best Android superphone, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is it, and it’s getting a bit of a boost this year.
