Update Uhd New Releases Review – Movies, Paramount has gone to the next generation with this new collection featuring four films. All films received Dolby Vision transmissions with Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio tracks and several hours of special features. Although the new gloss doesn’t cover mixed plots and all the films are released separately this week, the new box set is the easiest way to collect all the adventures on the silver screen.

Time can sometimes be kind to movies that don’t quite tie in on first release, but that’s not the case here.

Chakra is a thoughtful, meaningful story leading up to humanity’s first encounter with the Vulcans. Not coincidentally, this week’s box set release also marks the 40th anniversary of the April 5, 2063 “date of first contact” referred to in the film. Aside from some dated special effects, the film holds up pretty well. Thanks for his wonderful writing.

. Skin tones look natural on humans and look good on other creatures, while Data’s skin looks almost pearly and detailed on every Borg device and the furrows on Worf’s forehead.

Unfortunately, Paramount opted not to offer Dolby Atmos soundtracks, opting instead for Dolby TrueHD 7.1 for all four films. However, the two added channels provide a nice upgrade over the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 option offered on previous Blu-rays. The added channel separation creates more impressive and immersive soundscapes during battle scenes, but even quiet dialogue moments like many.

Benefit from enhanced audio imaging that adds surround depth. The dialogue is crisp and Jerry Goldsmith’s score is impressively woven into the soundtrack.

The bonus features look completely like the old versions, but are comprehensive for all movies. Includes several audio commentary tracks by the creative team as well as text commentary tracks by special effects gurus Michael and Dennis Okuda. Other highlights include a four-part film on Brent Spiner’s data, industrial lighting and magic effects, Trek roundtables, deleted scenes and storyboards. There’s plenty here to keep even the most enthusiastic

The release of this 4K box set feels very late, but the advanced technical results are worth the wait. If you must have all of these movies, the new box set is obviously the best option, but if you want to pick your favorites, Paramount is giving you their individual 4K movies at once. Now, Amazon has listed Marvel’s Black Widow for pre-order in 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray with a 9/14 street date (click here for the 4K link). (Note that Target, Best Buy, etc. also have some retail-exclusive releases.) These days, it’s common for Amazon to list any Disney, Marvel, or Pixar title for pre-order before its street date. No, we thought so. Worth noting. You can see the cover above and below.
