The migration away from backlighting for TVs is well underway, but while most manufacturers have already succumbed to the lack of OLED technology, Samsung has kept its dust dry.

We have actually known about the intentions of several LG Micro LEDs now. Finally at the 1000th CES, the company revealed a 146-inch modular Micro LED display called the Wall, which is now available for commercial use. This year the wall concept is further expanded with a monstrous 219 inch version and a multitude of model shapes in quirky shapes and sizes.

But even Samsung admits it has a long way to go, and in the meantime tries to convince us that Micro LED is also the next step in the evolution of traditional TVs; That’s why the more consumer-friendly 75-inch Micro LED TV was announced at this year’s CES.

In fact, when it is removed, it is actually built into the design, because each Micro LED TV is actually built using a certain number of modules arranged in a grid pattern – in the case of the 75 inch model we saw, then 64 of these units are arranged in an 8×8 pattern to make a large screen in the aspect ratio of the traditional 16×9.

The prototype 75in Micro LED model we’ve seen has a 4K resolution, and while we’re sure Samsung will launch with an 8K set instead, it doesn’t sound like that’s going to be possible for a while. while
You see, a 4K set requires the use of 25 million LEDs, all perfectly aligned and extremely carefully calibrated. Apparently, it is very difficult to produce this directly in mass. An 8K setup of the same size would require even smaller LEDs – and 100 million of them. Production is a completely different proposition.
Samsung says the first smart Micro LED models will display around 4,000 nits – the same as the company’s current Q900R range of 8K QLEDs – but 10,000 nits will be a long way off.
And, of course, because Micro LEDs are default and do not use backlighting, one pixel can be lit as brightly and/or colorfully as it wants, while the other is simply next to it and therefore completely black. . In other words, it should provide perfect blackout and solid contrast control for an OLED TV with a huge increase in brightness (it was widely believed that OLED could never get much brighter than around 1000 nits).

Another technical characteristic of Micro LEDs is their inorganic nature, which gives them a longer and more stable life than OLEDs. Samsung says the Micro LED set will last for 100,000 hours, which is over 11 years of non-stop use. They are said to be too energy efficient, at least in part, because they don’t need to shine through a color filter. The light from the LEDs goes directly into your eyes, and therefore is actually brighter with less effort.
This long life and low power consumption behind Samsung encourages us to think of its Micro LEDs as more than a TV for watching videos. The company claims these screens are always on display, displaying live images and/or information. They are also said to double as virtual aquariums or windows when not in “normal” use. Think of this as an extension of the company’s current environmental configuration, and you probably have the right idea.
This “way of life” also applies to activities. Samsung isn’t specific at this point, but I expect a heavy emphasis on voice over standard remote control. The company is already pushing this policy hard, with its 2019 QLED TV getting a new, smarter version of its Bixby smart assistant.
Another 75in Micro LED TV system that apparently hasn’t been revealed yet is how it will render sound. Conventional TV speakers require bezels and/or increase in thickness, both of which go against Samsung’s Micro LED goals.

The company says it could go down the sound-insulating surface path that Sony uses in its OLEDs — which it uses to make the entire screen vibrate and create sound — but that would also add thickness, and Samsung isn’t entirely convinced about the sound. quality they offer . approximation
It seems likely that a separate collaborative listening system will be offered. Sound access could be similar to LG’s ‘Wallpaper’ OLEDs, which consist of a dedicated ultra-thin screen connected to sound that also houses the input and processing bits. It is also possible that Samsung will offer several audio installation companies based on price or demand, perhaps leveraging various brands that are now part of the Harman business, such as Arcam, JBL and Harman/kardon.

As you can tell, we still don’t know much about the 75in Micro LED TV, including what it will actually look like and how it will sound. That’s because all the focus in our demos was only on picture quality – and that’s totally fine with us because it’s very impressive.

While, as noted above, Samsung says their consumer set will be 4000 nits at launch, this prototype’s peak brightness is “only” 1000 nits. It looks incredibly bright, though, largely due to the lack of color filters. It’s a stunningly dynamic and vibrant image with really unique colors. Everything looks real and alive to a degree we haven’t really experienced.
We were treated to a demo video just to show off the nightly set, which looks absolutely stunning in this set. Small but very bright stars twinkle brilliantly against the pitch-black space, while the neon of the city twinkles brightly, brightly. There is also amazing footage of wildlife, alive with vibrant foliage.
But if your feeling now is some kind of visual bombardment of whites and colors, this is not so – the great detail in the way recreates the rough and gray skin of the lizard, and we do not feel it in any place. if we see something other than genuine authenticity.
And for what it’s worth, the perspective of this prototype seems truly spotless. From anywhere in the room, the colors and blacks are completely consistent.

The only downside from an image performance perspective is that in the prototypes we’ve seen, the boundaries between the Micro LED modules have been distinguishable. You’ll have to look very closely, though, and there’s every chance this product is developed before it’s cast.
