If you’re looking at the coins and live in an area covered by 5G, this mobile broadband deal from Three is simply the best on the market. You’ll get an average download speed of 150Mbit/sec for £20/month on a two-year contract. And, to sweeten the deal even more, you get the first three months free, saving you £60. WOW.

When we looked at Three for last year’s Mobile Network Awards, we wondered if the network was lining up for the return of 5G. Twelve months later and the Tri-Naissance begins to happen.

It is now the leader in 5G coverage and is starting to catch up in terms of performance, although it still faces stiff competition from Vodafone and – especially – EE. Interestingly, the network is in early talks to merge with Vodafone, although given the glacial pace at which these things move, you’re unlikely to see any impact for a year or more.

Is that reflected in better results in this year’s Expert Review Mobile Network Awards survey? Well, Tri still has work to do on its customer service, but its scores for value are improving. Perhaps most importantly, only 67% of the Three subscribers we spoke with would recommend the network to a friend; a better score than Virgin Mobile (61%) and Vodafone (65.5%), but far from the pace set by Smarty (92%), Voxi (almost 90%) and Lebara (95%).

Oneplus Nord 2t Review: Why Pay More?

For a while, one of Three’s big selling points was that it offered the latest phones at cheaper prices than the other major networks. It was also one of the best networks to choose for unlimited data deals, and allowed you to use your data allowance abroad at no extra cost.

Best mobile network 2023: the UK’s best networks for 4G and 5G speeds, great data deals and customer service

The first two points still apply today, to some extent. Buy an iPhone 14 on Three, and you could have it for £49/month for 24 months plus £30 up front, albeit with a 1GB data allowance. Increase the data to a more realistic 100GB and the price rises to £61/mth plus £30 up front, at which point you might go the extra mile and pay £63 a month for unlimited data. That’s not a bad price, especially when £63 on EE only gets you 125GB, but you could have the same phone and unlimited data for £42/month on iD Mobile – although you’ll hit a £99 upfront fee.

It’s a slightly different story with the Samsung Galaxy S22, which costs £47/month plus £30 for 100GB, but would cost you £59/month with 125GB on EE. Again though, iD Mobile is even cheaper with a £33/mth 100GB data plan, up from £29 previously.

Business Phones, Broadband And Sim Only Plans

What about SIM only contracts? These start at £8/mth for a modest 1GB contract on a 24 month contract, but with a 50% discount for the first six months. On a 12 month contract, there is no discount and the price rises by £1. You get better deals for 12GB or 30GB, at £12/month and £14/month with the same terms, except each has a £2 increase if you only sign up for a year.

There was a time when Three’s Premium Unlimited plan was arguably their best SIM-only deal of all, and at £24/month for 24 months, with the first six months half price, it’s still a lot cheaper than EE’s equivalent bundles , O2, Giffgaff or Vodafone. However, iD Mobile and Smarty have even cheaper unlimited offers, so Three no longer has this niche to itself.

Looking at our survey data, Tri doesn’t stand out when it comes to profitability. Indeed, more than a third of customers say they are very satisfied with the network’s value for money, and almost half say they are fairly satisfied, but that’s still only 84% overall, and that’s iD Mobile, Tesco Mobile, Smarty, Voxi and Lebara vote in the nineties.

Tri also seems to struggle with customer service. Almost 27% of the users we surveyed are very satisfied, with another 50% moderately satisfied, but that puts it behind most of the other networks in our survey, with the exception of iD Mobile, Lebara, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone.

Ofcom’s latest customer satisfaction and service report also criticizes Three. With a score of 86%, the network scores below the 91% average for overall customer satisfaction. It also has the highest proportion of customers with reason to complain (16%) and more complaints to Ofcom per 100,000 subscribers than average. Something is clearly going wrong here, and Tri should really look at improving their customer service going forward.

RootMetrics’ latest performance research for Three has some good news: Vodafone tops the UK speed tables to take second place behind EE. Tri now has an average UK download speed of 29.9Mbits/sec, which puts it behind EE at 66.2Mbits/sec, but ahead of Vodafone’s 23.8Mbits/sec. The biggest improvements came in Britain’s cities. Of the 16 areas RootMetrics tests, Three’s average download speed was faster than 20Mbits/sec overall, and faster than 40Mbits/sec in eight.
