From the very beginning, Samsung’s ultra-smartphones have been characterized by their enormous size, and it was very difficult to use them with one hand. This is the same as the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The impressive smartphone measures 165.1 x 75.6 x 8.9 mm and weighs 227 grams, making it 5 grams heavier than its predecessor. Despite the slight difference in weight, the S21 Ultra feels slightly lighter and more balanced. With the S20 Ultra, I constantly feel like the device is going to fall out of my hand because of the weight distribution on top. Samsung has finally put an end to this criticism of its predecessor, which of course does not mean that the S21 Ultra is a lightweight smartphone. I recommend everyone to hold the device in their hands before buying. If you like big, heavy and thick smartphones, you’ll get your money’s worth here. Personally, this would be too much for me, and I often found it difficult to use the device with one hand.

The front is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, the strongest glass currently used in smartphones. Unfortunately, I can’t confirm if this is actually the case yet, as I was using a device with a pre-installed screen protector. If you unlock the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, you’ll be greeted by a huge display that’s only interrupted by a small central hole where Samsung houses the front-facing camera. It should please many that the manufacturer has significantly reduced the roundness on both sides of the panel in this year’s Ultra, meaning that there were no misaligned records during my daily use.
Next, let’s take a closer look at the frame. It consists of metal with a polished surface, so it is very sensitive to fingerprints and scratches. Despite the fact that the left side of the frame is completely white, the South Korean manufacturer installed buttons to increase the level of noise and silence on the right side. The on/off button is located just below. Despite the huge form factor, all keys are easy to reach. The USB-C port, microphone and one of the two speakers are located on the bottom. The latter was integrated into the ear. Of course, we’ll take a closer look at speaker quality later. Samsung then installs two more microphones on top.
If we turn the smartphone over, the silver color we tested immediately takes precedence. It’s matte, which means it doesn’t leave fingerprints and always looks slightly different depending on the frequency of light. If this color is too colorful for you, Samsung offers four more subtle colors: black, gray, blue and brown.

In addition to the color, you should immediately notice the new design of the camera in the upper left corner. Samsung has come up with something new here that I haven’t seen in any other smartphone like this. The camera mount comes out of the back frame of the device. I’m a huge fan and am always speechless when I compare the design of the S20 Ultra to the design of the S21 Ultra. Samsung has taken a big step forward here. Unfortunately, the camera bump protrudes a lot from the body, which means the S21 Ultra wobbles a bit when using it on a table.

There is no reason to criticize the skill. Nothing bends here, nothing disappears, and in general it makes a very stable impression. The keys sit tightly in the case and have a good pressure point.

One of the highlights is the integrated OLED display on the front panel. It has an impressive size of 6.8 inches and a crisp resolution of 3200 x 1440 pixels. Individual pixels cannot be recognized in everyday life. In addition, the panel supports a smooth refresh rate of 120 Hz, and this year it can finally be used simultaneously with WQHD + resolution. In addition, this is the so-called LTPO display, which was introduced with the Note 20 Ultra. LTPO technology allows the smartphone to switch between different refresh rates.

I can only say positive things about the quality. From the excellent and realistic color reproduction typical of OLED, really good black value, white value, all the way to amazing brightness. No other display is as bright in automatic mode. As a result, even on sunny days there are no problems with readability. But unfortunately, I was a little disappointed with the viewing angle stability, which is not bad, but compared to the competition and given the high price, I would have expected a little more. Samsung may improve this a bit with future smartphones.
The software used is One UI version 3.1 based on Android 11. One UI is a highly customized interface that has little in common with stock Android. However, I really like it because the idea of One UI is to be able to control smartphones with one hand quite well, despite the huge displays. There are also some extra features like eye protection mode, ingenious gesture controls, always-on display and double-tap to turn on and off. In addition, Samsung promises to provide updates for the device for four years.
