Samsung’s phone release year doesn’t seem to be slowing down, as the South Korean brand has finally revealed the highly leaked Galaxy S20 FE.

Galaxy S20 Fe Review: Not A Samsung Fan Yet? This Phone Might Just Change Your Opinion

The ‘FE’ moniker here stands for ‘Fan Edition’ and it’s a very affordable, mid-year update to the Galaxy S20 brand name – with the Note 20 DNA nicely embedded. It looks like it will continue to be sold alongside the Samsung Galaxy S21 in many places.

The biggest surprise is that this is a great phone, arguably easier to recommend than any other Samsung phone this year. Especially if you’re in the UK and looking for a Samsung Galaxy phone with the Snapdragon 865.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition) is available now for £599 (4G, Exynos 990) and £699 for the 5G Snapdragon model. The 4G version will not come to America.

This price puts it directly in competition with other mid-range phones such as OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8T, Moto Edge and LG Velvet. It’s also the same price as the iPhone 11, which is likely to be replaced by the iPhone 12 soon.

Samsung has retained a high-quality 120Hz panel for the S20 FE, which gives you super-smooth browsing. It has a 240Hz model as well, for more responsive games. Why Samsung didn’t add this feature to the Note 20 is a mystery to me.

The FE keeps an OLED panel with a smaller notch above the front camera, however it’s up to FHD+ instead of WQHD+ like the Galaxy S20. Since you can’t mix 120hz with high res, this change seems fine to me.

The screen isn’t as color accurate as the one on the S20 and doesn’t have HDR 10 support for apps like Netflix, though unless you put both phones next to each other it can be hard to tell. see. This is still a great panel, with enough brightness to combat a very hot day.

There’s an in-display fingerprint scanner here, instead of a physical button like you’ll find on the Pixel 5. It’s a little different from the sensors Samsung usually uses, as it’s optical instead. and ultrasonic so it needs light to work. You will see a bright light near your finger when you click and it can be annoying when you open it at night in a dark room. However, it’s fast and responsive and there’s a face lock if you want it.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fe (128gb, 6gb Ram) 6.5

At 6.5 inches, the FE sits between the smaller S20 and the larger S20 Plus. To me, it feels like the perfect size and I appreciate a flat display which is great for gaming on a curved panel.

Like the Galaxy Note 20, the S20 FE sports glass over hard plastic. I don’t mind the feel of plastic, especially on a cheap phone like this and I like the frost that doesn’t pick up fingerprints like glass – it’s always a nice touch. The front remains Gorilla Glass and the sides are made of aluminum for a strong frame.

The most important thing for me is that the phone remains IP68 rated for water resistance and still packs Qi wireless charging. Usually two parts are discounted at this price. What’s missing is a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you’ll have to use a USB-C connector or Bluetooth wireless for audio.

It comes in a few cool colors too, including a trendy blue and a stunning red. These are some of the more interesting hues you’ll find on the S20, and Samsung says they’re all available in different networks in addition to the standard options.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fe 4g First Impressions: Function Over Form

One of the key features of the Galaxy S20 FE is that the UK 5G model comes with a Snapdragon 865 platform, rather than the usual Exynos chipset you’ll find in the flagship Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20 series.

Many have complained about the reduced performance and battery capacity of the Exynos model compared to Qualcomm so it’s good to see Samsung decided to give a wider offer to the higher model without a doubt.

Now, if you choose the cheaper 4G version you will get the Samsung Exynos 990. This variant will not be available in the countries. Combined with that chipset you have 6GB of fast RAM, and 128GB of expandable storage.

The Snapdragon 865 performs better in benchmark tests than the Exynos version, but the real win comes with improved battery life – something you can read more about below. As you would expect from a flagship chipset, performance is top notch. Whether you’re gaming on the app, streaming Xbox titles with GamePass or pushing the phone in any other way it will handle everything without overheating or slowing down.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fe Review: Affordable Flagship Done Right…almost

The sound from the speakers is good, if easily muted on the bottom speaker, and the call quality is typical Samsung.

Out of the box the S20 comes with Android 10 and the latest version of One UI. Samsung’s interface has improved immeasurably over the past few years and while it’s very different from Google’s take on Android, I still like the way it looks and works. Samsung also revealed that you’ll get three years of system updates, starting with Android 11, which is always good news.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a 4500mAh battery, which is the same as the Galaxy S20 Plus and outperforms all S20 models in my tests. This is probably down to the Snapdragon 865 chip, which seems to perform better than its Exynos counterpart.

While I always struggled to get the most out of it with the S20 and S20 Plus, doing so with the S20 FE is easy and I can easily get more than six hours at a time – often more than an hour.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fe Review: New Galaxy S20 Is Fan Tastic

When it comes to charging there is support for 25w, however in the box there is a 15w brick – shame. However, a full charge takes over 90 minutes, so it’s pretty bad. There is also wireless charging, and wireless charging.

On the back of the S20 FE you will find three cameras: the same 12MP dual pixel sensor from the S20 (which was previously one of the best camera phones), with f/ 1.8 aperture and OIS, and 12MP Ultra wide and. and 8MP 3x telephoto camera with OIS. There is also a 32MP camera around the front.

The large 12MP sensor takes great photos, which shouldn’t be surprising since it’s a camera we’ve seen many times and impressed time and time again. Samsung has always been king when it comes to colorful, deep and slightly sharp images and those qualities are clearly visible here. These pictures are made for social media and I totally understand why they are so popular.

Are the photos better than the Pixel 4a? For me, no. But it’s lovely and you definitely get bright details and bright colors here. The Pixel 4a still nails it with dynamic range, natural bokeh, and most importantly, night mode.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fe 5g Cloud Lavender 6.5

Low light performance is good and you can get good shots in low light either with auto mode or Night option. I find Samsung’s night mode a bit behind some competitors, it tends to be bright and throw away important details. However, it is available if you are in a very dark situation.

Flipping between focal lengths is easy, and the S20 FE takes great shots at ultra wide and 3x zoom. None of them have the same quality as the original sensor and the results can be soft, especially when they get close, but they offer a comfortable level. It’s also nice to see Samsung not focusing on another sensor for its sake, other brands offering cheap Android phones should take note…

The 32MP front camera is great for those selfies and has some software to push a little and squeeze more faces into them. Video is also strong, although it lacks the 8K capabilities of the standard S20.

In the UK, we only have the Galaxy S20 model with Samsung’s Exynos chipset inside. It was good but had poor performance and poor battery life compared to the Snapdragon model. That’s fixed here, the 5G version of the S20 FE packs a faster Snapdragon 865.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fe Unboxing And First Impressions

Indeed, there is very little to like about the S20 FE and it is one of the best phones for its price. The choice, the quality of the second cameras leave a lot to be desired and feel that they have been added as the features were on the cheap side.

It is the most modern USB connector you will find
