Some extenders are power adapters – these are smart devices that plug into your network system at the router and elsewhere and send the signal through the power lines. But they only work in one circuit, if you have more than one circuit in your house then this system will not work in both.
You can also look into a mesh Wi-Fi system. These do a similar job, but you can add more nodes (as the extra posts are often called) in your home. A mesh also works well because the individual nodes talk to each other, instead of always going back to the original router.
Some caveats to start with: The speed at which a laptop, for example. connected to the router itself will exceed the speed you get wirelessly from the same router. Of course, even if the gadget is connected by cable to the Wi-Fi extender, the wireless journey from the router to the extender will affect the speed.
Likewise, even the best extender obviously cannot provide higher traffic speeds than the router provides. If you have a very fast router, look for an extender with Wi-Fi 6, which is the latest standard and can offer fast speeds to several devices at the same time.

Note that not all extenders work effortlessly with all systems: if you have fiber broadband, for example, you may need to fiddle with the settings to get the extender to play well with it.
We tested the ease of setup, ease of use, good design, strong value and effectiveness of the range. The test included speed checks in different places to see how well the signal held up and how this was affected as more or less devices were connected to the signal.

Google’s system is great for extending any wireless range, and you can add extra devices whenever you want. There are two different elements: the router (which connects by cable to the router of your ISP) and the wifi point that spreads the signal. It’s all controlled by the Google Home app, which makes setup easy and lets you check connection speed, how many devices are connected where, and more. You can also listen to music, for example through the wifi point, since it is a smart speaker that responds when you say: “Hey, Google”.

All components are beautifully designed and pleasant to look at, so you won’t feel the need to hide. Google claims you can connect up to 200 devices at a time. We didn’t test this, but with everything we could throw at it, there was no slowdown. The router costs £149, the dot alone is £129, while the router and dot is £239.
If you don’t have thick walls, a lot of space or many floors, a mesh can be excessive, especially if the extender is a wifi 6 model, like this one. The Nighthawk looks smart in its uncompromising black color and adds to an existing setup.
Netgear says it works with any router. If your service provider’s router is also wifi 6, you’ll be able to get the most out of it, although it’s also designed to work with older or slower routers – you won’t get the fastest speeds, of course. It streams data to several devices simultaneously instead of one after another. You only need to connect the nighthawk where the signal from your router can reach, and then offer a wide connection area. The range is strong and worked well even when on a different plane than the router itself.
This is a wifi 6 router capable of transferring data at very high speeds. Set up via a smartphone companion, the app is easy to use and links to an Amazon account. It also has decent security features so you can be notified if a new gadget is connected to your network. Like the regular Eero (£79, Amazon.co.uk), the design is good enough to have on display, which can only help with data transfer, compared to stashing it away behind the wardrobe.

The Orbis software can alert you if a new device connects to your network and can fix any problems. Tri-band means that in addition to the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands, there is also a 5GHz connection between the router and the satellite. This version comes with a router and a satellite, but there is also a version with two satellites, or you can add a satellite later. This installation is expensive, but a real star artist.
BT’s whole home wifi looks good: two clean discs that are attractive but unobtrusive. If two drives are not enough, you can add additional drives as needed – up to a maximum of six. Setup means downloading the appropriate smartphone app and following the instructions from there.
As with Google devices, the app can only tell you that you need to bring one of the disks closer to work properly. The system was fast and wide with solid performance – this is a reliable mesh router and the drives work with all broadband providers, not just BT.

The elegant dials that make up the M5 deco are efficient and very easy to install. They have neat controls, via a smartphone app, so you can turn off individual devices or ensure others have priority. There are also parental controls to help keep children away from adult content.
Once the installation is complete, it is also very easy to use. The TP-Link deco M5 has dropped in price, making it a very good value. This, combined with the decent range this three-disc setup has, is enough to make it attractive.
This unit isn’t the prettiest on test, but it does the job. It takes the signal from your router and rebroadcasts it powerfully around your home. If you don’t need the extra range that a multi-satellite mesh network provides, then this is an extremely affordable solution. In almost every way, this is an excellent machine. The only way it’s not that good is that it’s a wifi 5 device, not wifi 6, so it can’t match the faster speed.
This extender looks like a happy alien robot throwing its arms around in joy and is very cheap and works well. Connect it to an outlet near the router – it does not need to be connected to it – and it effectively divides the signal. Setup wasn’t as straightforward as some out there, but still manageable with the WPS button on the front and the handy Tether app to guide you.

Another slightly foreign device from TP-Link, this is great if you have a wifi 6 router and want to extend the range. Setup is simple, mostly through the Tether smartphone app, but a bit trickier through a web browser. You need to make sure that the LED on the extender is constantly blue – if it is off or lights up red, then the signal is not strong enough and you need to move the TP-Link closer to the router.
If you live in a place with walls that wifi has a hard time penetrating, then a power cord system like this can help. It’s good that the adapters have pass-through plugs in them, so you can also insert other gadgets. In other words, you will not lose an outlet when you install mesh wifi 2. There are also Ethernet ports in each adapter, one of which is used to connect the first adapter to the router.
Devolo loses marks for inappropriate documentation that doesn’t help you install. This also requires the two adapters to be in the same room that you installed and move the other one later, which is a bit counterintuitive. Once done, the performance is good.
