When we looked at Tatoo for last year’s Mobile Network Awards, we wondered if the network was leading the rollout of 5G. Twelve months later and the third Naisa appears.

It is now the leader in 5G service and is starting to make headway in performance, although it still faces stiff competition from Vodafone and particularly EE. Interestingly, the network is said to be in early talks about a merger with Vodafone, although given the glacial pace at which these things move, you probably won’t see any impact for a year.
Is this reflected in the top results in this year’s Mobile Network Awards professional opinion poll? Granted, Tatoo still needs to work on customer service, but its value scores are improving. Perhaps most interestingly, only 67% of the three users we spoke to would recommend the network to a friend; A better score than Virgin Mobile (61%) and Vodafone (65.5%), but far from the pace set by Smarty (92%), Voxi (almost 90%) and Lebara (95%).
For a while, one of its three main selling points was that it offered the latest phones at lower prices than other major networks. It was also one of the best networks to choose from for unlimited data deals, allowing you to take advantage of data opportunities abroad without paying extra.
The first two are still true to some extent today. Buy an iPhone 14 in three and you can get it for 24 months for £49 a month and £30 upfront, albeit with 1GB of visible data. Upgrade to 100GB of real data and the price rises to £61 a month plus £30, at which point you can also go the extra mile and pay £63 a month for unlimited data. That’s not a bad price, especially when £63 on EE only gets you 125GB, but you can have the same phone and unlimited data on iD Mobile for £42 a month – although you’ll be paying £99 upfront.

It’s a slightly different story with the Samsung Galaxy S22, which comes in at £47 and £30 for 100GB, but 125GB on EE will cost you £59/month. Again, iD Mobile is cheap with a data plan of £33 a month and £29.
What about SIM only contracts? These start at £8/month for a modest 1GB contract on a 24-month contract, but with a 50% discount for the first six months. For a 12 month contract, there is no discount and the price goes up by £1. You’ll get the best deal for 12GB or 30GB at 12GB per month and £14GB for the same terms, except for a £2 each if you sign up for just one year.
There was a time when the Three Advanced Unlimited plan was probably the best SIM-only plan out there, and at £24 for the first half of 24 months, it’s still a bargain compared to similar packages. EE, O2, Giffgaff or Vodafone. However, iD Mobile and Smarty have unlimited contracts that are cheaper, so Tatu no longer has this place to itself.
Looking at the data from our survey, Tatu is not different when it comes to getting paid. It is true that more than a third of customers say that they are very satisfied with the internet value for money, and almost half of them are satisfied, but this is only 84% with iD Mobile, Tesco Mobile, Smarty, Voxi. and Lebara elections in the nineties.
