Update Three Huawei P40 Pro Review – Huawei’s P series has always stood out for its outstanding smartphone photography and stylish design. Huawei P40 Pro Plus Camera Review: The King Of The Smartphone Zooms
The curved screen is unusual in that not only the sides of the screen are rounded, but also the top and bottom edges. The first thing I reject are the bells and whistles that characterize every tactile experience in everyday life. Why? If you have gesture control enabled, your fingers won’t touch your fingers when you swipe up and down, but will move smoothly from the curved screen on the screen. It looks great and I dare to predict that this feature will appear on other high-end smartphones from other manufacturers.

But the top and bottom edges of the Huawei P40 Pro’s screen are visible. So far, they’ve been flat and straight on all smartphones, whether they have curved edges or not. Huawei P40 Pro has a small radius that bends according to the house frame. Huawei’s preferred marketing name for the display is ‘Quad Over Flow Display’. I can see there is a slight bend in the screen but it is not noticeable on the sides.
Huawei P40 Pro Plus Review: Zooming Into The Future
Technically, Huawei uses a 6.58-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2,640 x 1,200 pixels on the P40 Pro. The panel can also produce 60 and 90 Hertz refresh rates. In my testing, the display was nice, bright, and color-true. But you have to get used to the four clear edges on a curved screen.
The fingerprint sensor on the Huawei P40 Pro has been moved too far towards the center of the screen, which I found a bit inconvenient at first. But in practice, the chosen location is good, as you do not feel the smartphone wants to jump out of your hand and unlock with a fingerprint.
Huawei uses Android 10-based EMUI 10.1 for the P40 Pro, just like the Mate 30 Pro and Huawei Mate Xs, so there should be no issues with updates and security patches. Huawei Mobile Services, which runs entirely on the P40 Pro instead of Google Mobile Services, is a bit different. First, you can show all the information: WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter all run on the Huawei P40 Pro. You just need to download the app through the Huawei App Gallery, such as Facebook and WhatsApp, or go to the manufacturer’s page and download the APK there. The third way, like Twitter, is very clever and saves mobile web pages as HTML5 that can be used through the Quick View feature.
Huawei Mobile Services has only been out of China for a few weeks but is not operating very smoothly. Migration via Phone Clone App, which according to Huawei can also transfer data like WhatsApp chat history to your new P40 Pro, failed completely. I also couldn’t play my current favorites like Star Trek Fleet Command and Shadowgun War Games on the P40 Pro because they weren’t available in the App Library and re-synced through Google Play Services. But it is important for Huawei to convince the developers of HMS Core and its SDKs and APIs. If Huawei succeeds here, only time will tell.

To understand why Huawei doesn’t easily onboard all developers from Google Mobile Services to Huawei Mobile Services, you need to understand that Google services don’t rely directly on apps like Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps and Google Play Store. It’s the interface and underlying services that make Google’s platform work. Huawei has released a comprehensive package with HMS (Huawei Mobile Services), HMS Core, App Gallery and many services such as Huawei ID, Huawei Mobile Cloud and Huawei’s own applications. You’d think Huawei could offer similar apps in its App Library that we’ve been using from the Play Store for years. Of course it would if Google hadn’t provided more services to app developers over the years.

So, if you buy a P40 Pro, you must first install the Phone Clone app during setup to transfer your old smartphone’s installed apps and associated app data to the P40. Pro. Then you need to disable apps that don’t work without Google Mobile Services. These are mostly game apps and all apps that accept in-app purchases as well as apps that use Google Location Services. Unfortunately, most of them are mobile apps. Car sharing, e-scooter, or ride sharing services cannot be requested. Not yet, because Huawei is working hard to fill the gaps in the App Library and actually develop as opposed to Google Mobile Services.

Until then, you have to use so-called quick apps to add to the App Library. You can also “install” from the App Library but that usually only covers the basic functions. Twitter is one of the most popular instant messaging applications. Huawei also recommends using a third-party search engine. This app searches the APK list and app source for the app you are looking for. So, there may be multiple download sources provided for the same application and common consumers may get confused. After all, they are used to installing everything from one place with just one click on the Google Play Store. It’s even scarier when you think about updates to apps because these updates aren’t automatically downloaded and installed from the App Library, they can’t be done automatically. You must update your “unauthorized apps” yourself.
