Well… maybe when written as a number (3), Three or other local entities (Tre & Tri).
They are the local cell phone with the (second) worst coverage and (second) slowest speed in the country.
The only way to find out is to search for Drei Austria and compare it to other Austrian SIM cards (A1 Austria and Magenta Telekom Austria).

Three, Drei, Tre or Tre – you may know Hutchison as one of the four series I mentioned earlier.
Three, especially Three Hong Kong and Three UK (but otherwise Three Macau), is also known for its travel SIM cards that can be used in many countries around the world.
Heck, even the travel SIM seller SimCorner, my favorite seller (and I also tried its travel SIMs on this trip, also in Austria), sells three travel SIMs for Hong Kong and Britain because it is important for money.
Although the Third may be the (second) smallest mobile operator in your country (Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Macau, Sweden and the United Kingdom), it is a global player.

But with the introduction of 5G NR, that will change – Drei Austria has the fastest 5G NR network … which the first customers cannot use 🥲.

There are also many Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), such as Lycamobile Austria, but they are not worth your time.
In terms of 4G/LTE availability, Drei Austria has the worst availability, with an availability rate of 97.1%. Behind A1 Austria (97.3%) and Magenta Telekom (98.3%).

Looking at 5G NR, Drei Austria has also lost the 5G NR space race (9.5%). No A1 Austria (13.1%) and Magenta Telekom (31.6%), are winning together.
If we look at the perspective of 5G NR, Drei Austria is also not good, with a total of 2.4 (on a scale of 10 points). Behind A1 Austria (4) and Magenta Telekom (4.3).
I don’t remember many opportunities to accept it – even on the S-Bahn and U-Bahn in Vienna.
But the reception at the border was also suitable on the bus to and from Slovakia (although the A1 Austria and Magenta Telekom are better).

Now that you have a basic understanding of Drei Austria and the phone market in Austria, it’s time to talk about how to get a Drei Austria SIM card.
As in many countries in Europe, especially the European Union, I recommend visiting a Drei Austria store to pick up your SIM card.
Oh… and you usually pay to register your SIM card – more on that later.
Austrian SIM cards are also sold by third parties such as supermarkets or convenience stores as in many other countries.

There is a SIM card seller (Wowww) that costs 20 EUR for a SIM card and 20 EUR for just registration (40 EUR) – then you add another plan! So you better avoid it.

There are digital SIM card systems in many countries (Europe), which is unfortunately (usually) unavoidable.

Fortunately… the registration fee at Vienna International Airport (20 EUR) is usually not bad, but I still find the registration fee ridiculous.
I did this with my Drei Austria SIM card (because paying 10 EUR is terrible), but because part of the registration is in German and the verification program is very slow, it can be and a time to go.
It took me 30 minutes with my broken German – that’s why I was finally willing to pay the A1 registration fee (5 EUR) later (but because I was only there for one day Vienna… I didn’t want to spend an hour of registration. to spend 🗿).
In defense of Drei Austria, the customer was the only employee who said that I could avoid this by using this method.

Magenta Telekom didn’t charge me the usual EUR 10 of registration, but you shouldn’t expect it either.

Can You Use A Data Only Sim In A Phone?
Instead, he wants you to also buy a subscription when you buy a Drei Austria SIM card, from 10 EUR.
When I asked for just the starter pack, because 10 GB of data was enough for testing purposes, Drei’s employee told me that it was not possible.
Since I didn’t want to pay EUR 29.90 (EUR 9.90 starter package, EUR 10 for registration & EUR 10 for registration) for a SIM card for a day of testing, I told him that I would think about it and buy the SIM card online.
But I recommend using a browser that can translate pages on the fly (such as Chrome, Edge (Bing Translation is not very good) or Firefox (extension required).

Oh, keep in mind that not all passports are accepted for online registration. I don’t have a list of unsupported countries… but if the registration doesn’t work after two or three tries, you’ll know why. And many Drei shops are happy to come and pay to help you 🥲

But, if I remember correctly, the page told me that I would be charged after my initial plan, which was 30 days later.
However, when I was in Vienna, Drei Austria was the only mobile operator that offered eSIM to first-time customers.
However, you must first buy a SIM card (EUR 9.90 + purchase price if you register at the store (EUR 10 – EUR 40) + EUR 10 registration fee) and then exchange for an eSIM for another EUR 20.
I tested Airalo’s Eurolink eSIM in Austria (on the Drei Austria network) and the Nomad Europe eSIM (also on the Drei Austria network).
Can I Use 4g For Home Internet?
They worked well (and were cheaper than the Austrian SIM card if we factored in SIM card costs, registration and registration fees).

With an average download speed of 53.73 Mbps, Drei Austria is ahead of Magenta Telekom (47.07 Mbps) and behind A1 Austria (69.80 Mbps).
With a download speed of 267.89 Mbps, Drei Austria is ahead of Magenta Telekom (161.10 Mbps) and even ahead of A1 Austria (123.35 Mbps).
But even if 5G NR is open to the first customers of Drei Austria, you probably won’t reach the speed of 5G NR (up to 1 Gbps – more on that later).
