And then there is DLSS 3. The number of games that support it is, of course, quite small. But it is growing, and the RTX 4070 can effectively use the AI frame generation function. Cyberpunk 2077, running at its native 4K resolution and with psycho ray tracing enabled, averages 16fps on this GPU: too low for gaming. The F1 22 was also able to go from 43fps in native 4K to 87fps at DLSS 3, and that was in Enhanced mode.
On a tactile level, Cyberpunk 2077 won’t feel like it’s running at 71fps – aiming and controlling will feel slower because your computer only sees half of those frames as “real” (the rest are imaginary. However, even in bottleneck-resistant games like Metro Exodus and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the RTX 4070 can keep up with the RTX 4070 Ti, a card that costs hundreds more. And on a gaming monitor with a sufficiently high refresh rate, the RTX 3070 clearly improves the fluidity of games such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Three Kingdoms and F1 22.

Gaming at 1440p also allows the RTX 4070 to handle high-quality ray tracing without the ever-necessary backup from a high-end device. Adding Ultra RT effects to Metro Exodus dropped the framerate to 70fps, which still looks very smooth, and while the same for Watch Dogs Legion dropped it to 54fps, it’s still okay and you can play.
However, a high-quality DLSS shot will push it to 61fps, and in Hitman 3, the combination of high-quality DLSS and full ray tracing produced 80fps: a much smoother experience than the 53fps you got with the raw RT effects . Yes, DLSS in general remains a strong reason to choose a particular Nvidia GPU, and once again DLSS 3 could take frame rate improvements to a new level.
The design of the MSI Gaming X Trio doesn’t fit the most compact RTX 4070, but it’s significantly smaller than their RTX 4070 Ti Suprim X 12G.

At frame rate it hits 73fps, which looks great and is good enough (as the computer still thinks it’s running at an average of 42fps). Path tracking is one of the next big frontiers in game rendering technology, so it’s very encouraging that the RTX 4070 can handle it so well.
Most interpretations of current UK law say I can’t come to your house and physically stop you from buying a £599 graphics card just for 1080p use. But I still don’t recommend it.
Of course, 100fps will be a breeze for the RTX 4070 in most games, but unless you’ve gone full HD with a high-end gaming processor, it’s going to be a bottleneck. Our test PC has a Core i5-11600K, a high-powered chip that’s less than three years old, and with which the RTX 4070 is still limited to the point where the RTX 3070 can catch up:
