However, I liked how the dialogue and characterizations were written. Also, the maze doesn’t get in the way of the story. It’s basically a visual novel, but with a bit of maze navigation sprinkled in here and there for flavor.

Going through the maze is just one way for you to discover the amazing artwork of each level. And you really want to, because every corner of every piece of art is a sight to behold. Some of the scenes are peaceful and scary, while some are disturbing enough that you almost want to look away (although too beautiful that you don’t want to).
I wish there was a gallery where you could unlock all the art scenes at the end of the game, because I’m dying to see the macabre masterpiece even after the credits. What is the general appeal? The thing is, while I’ve always been a story-driven gamer, the storytelling here doesn’t engage me as much as I might think. There are a lot of endings for you to unlock, but by the end of my playthrough I was happy with what I accomplished and didn’t feel compelled enough to replay the game. If there was a feature that would let you replay each chapter to see how it differs, I’d probably do it – but there isn’t.
Also, what drives me forward is my curiosity about that majestic and terrifying place. There are too many unanswered questions in my mind about the reality and magic of the labyrinth, and while what I really wanted was to know more about the mysterious “hell”, what I got was the story of Asterion and Theseus (and Arianna too. , because he is disabled like the rest of them).
Overall, I enjoyed my Unmaze game, even if it wasn’t what I expected. The “fear of missing out” bug will bite you every time you choose one character over another, as returning to a character you’ve ignored will prompt them to throw snarky comments at you about leaving them behind.

This could make you want to explode, or close your eyes and let the character die – it’s up to you, since both characters weren’t very pleasant to begin with, unfortunately.
Unmaze is an amazing unique visual novel with an interesting trick to enhance your game. The stunning artwork is its saving grace, but other than that, the story is a bit of a letdown. It’s a different kind of game than any other cookie-cutter visual novel out there, so there’s that. Plus, you can try the first chapter for free if you want to experience it before you buy the rest.
