Update The Shining Funko Review – Scream 31 Days of Terror Player: Danny Torrance #458 of The Shining from POP! Funko puppets
During 2017’s 31 Day Curse of Child Terror, I reviewed Funko’s POP! from Jack Torrance from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and today, a little over 2 years later, I’m revisiting Danny Torrance. About a month ago I finally got a chance to read The Sleep Doctor and I really enjoyed it. It’s a great book by Stephen King (which is always a book I hate to look at the end of) and I’m back in the mood to watch The Shining again. Not sure if we’ll see POP! Vinyl from Doctor Who Sleep so this is the only Danny Torrance pop we get. The Shining has long been one of my favorite King books and I dreamed of having an action figure based on Stephen King’s house when I was younger and had access to the writings and movies based on it. Danny is an interesting POP! because he was easily the first POP! I can think of one in my collection that would be hard to put in unless you know who it’s for. Update The Shining Funko Review
* Danny is a great POP! Vinyl is made with the same aesthetic you’d expect: round heads, big black eyes, and minimal facial features. His hair looks pretty good compared to Danny Lloyd’s in the movie (maybe worse, actually). Of course, his head swings like many other Funko POP! vinyls (other than Star Wars and Marvel characters).
Funko Pop! The Shining The Grady Twins Bloody Chase Exclusive 2 Pack (
* Danny is clearly modeled on this scene from the movie, and his outfit matches what he wears perfectly. The paint on the shirt and the ribbing of the striped pants are also detailed.
* Danny’s hand has two items, the first is lipstick in his right hand to write “REDRUM” on the wall. The packaging has “REDRUM” written on the plastic in front of Danny, which has a nice effect on the person who keeps this in the box.
* In his right hand is a knife that Danny has picked up (you can see it in the movie still above). It’s definitely not something I would immediately associate with the character, but it fits the scene and helps make it seem unique.
* Danny is very, very clear. As I said in the introduction above, Danny is the first POP! I had a vinyl that I felt I could carry and didn’t realize until someone told me. I think Funko can choose more clothes for Danny, like the famous Apollo 11 t-shirts, or even put Danny on his tricycle. I think that will make it more known because, as it stands, it is not very recognizable or unique.
Funko Pop Movies: The Shining
* There is some mess and roughness with the extra paint rubbing off the side of Danny’s head, especially around his hairline.
I love Danny Torrance and The Shining, but I think Funko made a mistake here because there’s nothing clearly recognizable about these figures. Her body, clothes and looks are nothing short of amazing and even if you’re a fan of the movie, I don’t think you’d know her without someone telling you. If he’s on a rickshaw or has an Apollo 11 shirt, he’ll be a real winner. Danny is still a great POP, but only for fans of the movie.
