Not only is the Galaxy S22 series around the corner – we know that every leak will ‘ include the Ultra version with Note flavor – but we have many enthusiasts from OnePlus, Google and Xiaomi to think about.

For our original review of the phone in January 2021, we gave the Galaxy S21 Ultra a 4.5/5 star rating, making it one of the best phones of the year. We are limited by what the phone has to offer across the processor, display and main camera. Especially compared to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which we are not very interested in, especially in terms of its design.
Six months after the phone rang, we were still interested. Even compared to the new Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra foldable phone it is still a worthwhile purchase price. Its starting price of $1,200 does not prevent us from including it.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Fe Review: 2021 Premium Specs In 2022 For Solid Value
With six months to go, it’s time to give the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra a well-deserved long-term review.
So far, the closest and latest Android competitor in 2022 to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra we’ve seen is the OnePlus 10 Pro, a phone you can’t buy outside of China yet. Interestingly, most of the phone’s features are consistent or weaker than the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
For example, the battery size is the same (5,000mAh). The screen is very similar: a large WQHD AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has maximum RAM (up to 16GB) and maximum internal storage (up to 512GB). The camera features of the Galaxy S21 Ultra also go far beyond the OnePlus 10 Pro.
Except for two parts, the specifications of the Galaxy S21 Ultra are still better than the OnePlus 10 Pro.
Galaxy S21 Review: Admitting Mistakes And Atoning
In fact, the OnePlus 10 Pro beats the Galaxy S21 Ultra on two fronts: processor and charging speed. The processor in the 10 Pro is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the smartphone of 2022. The one-year-old Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 of the Galaxy S21 Ultra are incompatible by definition. However, these chipsets are still monsters – not as many monsters as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
In fact, the one thing Samsung can’t compete with is the charging speed of the 10 Pro. The 10 Pro is up to three times faster than the Galaxy S21 Ultra for wired and wireless connections. This is a shame and we really hope that Samsung corrects this difference with the Galaxy S22 series.
Outside of the Android system, Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max was released at the end of 2021 and is a well-known rival to the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Again, Apple’s A15 Bionic processor is a bit more powerful, but it doesn’t make much sense to break the daily experience. Samsung phones are still competing in terms of screen, storage and cost. The Galaxy S21 Ultra also offers a camera package that is more versatile and robust than Apple’s latest flagship iPhone.
However, the point is that even in 2022, the Galaxy S21 Ultra will still be a luxury phone when it comes to raw features. Even a year later, the phone can compete with other high-end smartphones. In terms of software, the smartphone has already received an update to Android 12, with Samsung’s own One UI 4 update on top. You can read more about what’s new at the link below.
Samsung Galaxy S21: Price, Release Date, Features Announced For 5g Android
Great features are the key to making a great phone, but design is also important. However, the flawed design can make the phone look outdated a year later as it will stick out like a sore thumb compared to its more sophisticated smartphone counterpart.
Fortunately, while testing the phone for this long review of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, I never felt that it looked ugly and strange. This is interesting because this is not the case for the 2020 model. It is just nice that Samsung has moved away from the villains – and I will say it: bad – the design of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The S21 Ultra’s lightweight camera on the side of the device and the curved (but not too curved) side give it a certain elegance that can look modern even five years from now.
Of course, this is still a big and heavy phone. Up to 229g – depending on the model – the Galaxy S21 Ultra will be a brick in your pocket if it fits there. Holding its large frame will be a problem if you don’t have big enough arms and trying to use the machine with one hand is a fool’s errand.
However, those who want a phone in this category know and accept this. People like me wish there was a way to get the features and specs of the Galaxy S21 Ultra in a smaller and lighter form factor, but it won’t happen anytime soon. For what it is, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is still beautiful.
Galaxy S21: Lower Prices Make The Choice Between The S21, Plus And Ultra Even Harder
One of our biggest issues with the Galaxy S20 Ultra is its camera. Despite some stellar hardware, the phone has issues with some basic functions, such as autofocus. The Galaxy S21 Ultra solves all the problems we had with its predecessor, making it one of the best smartphone cameras in 2021 or any year at that.
